The part where Maria coughed and James annoyingly responded. It's like he never learnt the lesson. Truly a heartbreaking game. I just wish there was like a bitter sweet ending like somehow they got reunited happily but accepted his fate (gets stuck on the otherworld with her)

Since SH2 is pretty much about James' penance,you could say the "Leave" ending is good since James finally learns his lesson and moves on.

That is the point of Silent Hill 2. There is no possible way James could ''happily'' leave Silent Hill after what he did.

the maria ending is bad, in it, she gets sick. it implies that James didn't learn his lesson and will go through a loop. that's how it is in sh 2 (classic) that's why James sounds slightly angry/ upset when he says "you better do something about that cough"

WARNING!! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!! The choices below will give you the best ending in SH2 (Leave), not the one on the video: 1. Don't examine Angela's knife.* 2. Investigate Mary's pic, letter, and hanky at least 3 times throughout the game.* 3. Don't "care" for Maria as much as possible (that is, if you have the option not to hang out with her too long in Rosewater Park and take a tour along Nathan Avenue; and don't visit her when she stays in a room at Brookhaven Hospital and is trapped in a cell at the Labyrinth). Don't also save her if monsters attack her (she won't die, just don't save her, proceed with your objective)* 4. Always keep James healthy, maybe stay at "green" level (80% and above, I think) health. If you have enough supplies, heal immediately after getting injured. 5. Avoid killing the monsters or just stay out of fights if you can. You can knock down the monsters but don't fully kill them, such as by stomping on them. 6. Pick/Blame the SNAKE at the end of the coin cabinet puzzle.* 7. Use the ROTTEN APPLE on the mirror at Lakeview Hotel.* 8. After the twin pyramid head boss fight, go through the RUST COLORED EGG door.* 9. In the long corridor/tunnel before the final boss area, listen to Mary's dialogue. Don't leave this corridor until she finishes speaking. Doing the opposite or picking other choices from those listed above will likely get you the other two endings in your first walkthrough (Maria and In Water). Choices with * contribute significantly to these endings Most of the other NG+ endings require getting specific items or doing specific stuff.

What I like about this game is there's no real meaningful distinction between dreams and reality. In the OG game there's a DLC where you play as Maria, and she meets a "man" named Ernest. It's unclear if he's actually there or not, in the physical sense. It's totally ambiguous. They are like dreams that woke up.

Yes she is real. She makes it very clear during the game "I am real, see?". Maria feels pain and thinks as a human being, even can remember things from Mary's life (that's why she has the need to look after Laura, because Mary loved her). The thing is that Maria got created by the town based on James's mind and desires (That's why Maria DLC is called "Born from a wish". But still a human being

@ See I dunno. That’s awfully convenient to the point where it’s almost TOO convenient that another woman that looks like Mary and holds her memories could be real. I believe she is real in the sense that she is a physical manifestation of James’s psyche. But no on ever saw her beyond James.
