The "Remake being based off the movie, not the OG game" concept Pat is reffering to with SH2 has happened before with Ratchet and Clank PS4. The Remake was made to coincide with the release of the film and was never meant to replace the Original game according to reports from employees. The Movie was terrible and while the Remake was mostly ok, The Original was superior in executing most aspects that both games shared when you started comparing. The Remake also cut many of the planets you visited in the PS2 version. I remember the fanbase being worried about the state of the series during the aftermath, then Rift Apart released which ended up being many fans' favorite in the series. It's also one of my favorites.

THis is all true, of course the biggest difference being that Ratchet & Clank has always been in a better place than Silent Hill. The Ratchet remake and movie being not great was really the only time the series made a big misstep, whereas Silent Hill has constantly had recent bad games and bad remakes. So saldy this turn is just another is huge missteps for the series.

After seeing so many people being so blindly optimistic about the new SH announcements it was pretty refreshing to see even Suzie show some skepticism towards the new projects, especially SH2R. It is pretty cool to see that the general consensus seems to be people are pretty excited about SH:f and that it was easily the most interesting announcement/trailer, definitely seems to be pretty creatively rich and at least pushes the franchise forward, very excited to see what it's gonna be. Silent Hill Townfall and F are both really promising projects, awful names aside. People are excited because even though it might turn out bad, everyone on the projects seem to have a lot of love and respect for the property. Pat and Suzy would rather just be excited for a remake that appears to be doing something only slightly more than the bare minimum for a remake. And even if the SH2 remake isn’t good (which I actually have high hopes for), I’m glad more people can be exposed to the original game.

Does anyone remember that picture of Obama uprezzed by AI, that looks nothing like Obama? Just mindlessly sticking to the original and not changing anything, even if attempted, is not possible. You're aware that game and its atmospehe is a sum of every small part - every mesh, every texture, every animation, every camera placement and movement, every sound and every lack of sound has an intention behind it, and if a re-maker lacks the same intention, their sum may end up completely different, even if they actively try to do what they percieve is the same. One of the goals of a remake is always to make the product look better. So imagine them taking a muddy PS2 texture, concidering what to do with it, and making it look sharper and prettier - but the original muddy texture was a small piece of a purpose to confuse player, and the new one doesn't work for this purpose, so this piece is lost now. Imagine them re-doing a stiff animation into something more natural, where "stiff" was the point. Imagine them re-recording voice lines, so the characters could sound more like cool beatiful LA actors, and not confused ordinary people - with the same text, so it's "sticking to the original", but "uprezzed" with better quality audio and "better quality" voice actors... Even with a full intention to do the same but better (AI uprezzing Obama) you can end up with something completely different (not Obama at all)

Imo after seeing things like bad ports, companies sitting on IPs because they don’t want to pay royalties, and old games that are impractical to play without piracy, I just wish there was an officially recognized video game archival organization or movement. After a certain amount of time, games should just slip into public domain and we should just leave it to an army of archivists to recreate the original gameplay experience and make the game available for all platforms. As it is, the only people who are maintaining old games so that people can play them today (emulator and rom creators) are in the same boat as game pirates.

My biggest concern is the usage of UE5 with Silent Hill 2 Remake, I know Bloober team has proper training with UE5, however, *Why didn't Konami give them access to the FOX engine?* The FOX engine has been picking up dust after MG: Survive, they could outsource it to Bloober and make a unique looking game. UE5 games has started to blend in with each other. (from my perspective) Still, I'm intrigued by the other projects that got in the mix, hopefully this'll set Konami right. _Hopefully..._

The reason why it isn't using the FOX engine is that there isn't anyone at Konami that could even teach them to use it any more. The engineers that made it left when KOJI PRO was dissolved, and god only knows if they properly archived documentation of it outside of its use for what, soccer games?

The spear to knife change in the diorama bothers the crap out of me because the spear is supposed to be a phallic metaphor. It unironically represents James' penis, but more likely is a representation for his aggressive sexual desires. its one of those layers of metaphor i love about the game. Like you have this woman who looks exactly like james' wife, being killed by a manifestatin of james' guilt and desire for punishment for his sins and that manifestation is using a phallic object to kill her. Like, its all right there, but its just painfully obvious that nobody at konami understands silent hill anymore.
