The change to the female protagonist wasn't the only stupid thing the story did. Cheryl wasn't even Harry's real daughter but he was still willing to go through literal hell to get her back. She was the only thing he had after his wife died. That sense of harrowing desperation was completely lost. And besides there was already a perfectly good Silent Hill story with a female protagonist. It's called Silent Hill 3.

See, I kinda have a soft spot for the Silent Hill movies, cause the first one is at the very least has a lot of cool fanservice while not being all that faithful other than in terms of monster and location design, as well as adding that amazing Otherworld transition that Homecoming managed to make feel cheap, and the second one is just sort of a fun fanfiction written by a middle-schooler version of Silent Hill 3, and it's ridiculously entertaining if you see it as just that. As much as I'd love a Silent Hill 1 and 3 or 2 movie, Jacob's Ladder kinda fills the need as is

The Silent hill film often gets touted as one of the "better" adaptations of video games but honestly I don't see it. I don't mind things being changed in adaptation but it needs to be in service of the plot. I mean Tom Bombadill was dropped from the Lord of the rings and for good reason; because the plot stops dead for a good three chapters after that point. I wouldn't mind the gender swap thing as long as it made sense, which it didn't.

I'd say _visually_ it is one of the better adaptations. The film itself is fine, until: (1) Pyramid Head is used (2) The almost Monty Python-esk "burn the witch" dialogue of the final third.

Silent Hill is one of the best franchises to adapt into a movie. The gameplay isn't that far from what movies are typically doing and it's honestly suprising how they never capitilized on it. It always bothered me that games can stick to the movies they are based on, but movies often make shit up when they never really had to.

People who say that Silent Hill films (especially the first one) are the best live action adaptation of a game are in pure state of denial (or looking for a less bad adaptation than RE films). Not only for Harry Manson's genderbender but making an adaptation without substance with many troubles: 1 - Turning The Order into a fanatical Christian-like cult with motivations and stupid members is a shame. I dislike how they make Silent hill a literal hell with many people within to torture them (if the film adapts the second game..) 2 - Trying to evoke a maternity link by splits the character of Dahlia (who is a brilliant cultist manipulator) into two dumb people (Dahlia naive caring single mother and Christabella an empty inquisitive religious fanatic) is bad and offensive since Original Dahlia bargains for Kaufmann secret tratament on Alessa, and manipulates Harry making her plan go on. 3 - making Alessa a "demon reaper" dark alessa with almost omnipotence and torturing for 30 years a whole cult of people when in reality she is tortured the original material, makes it even worse and edgy as hell. 4- Apart from the fact that the absence of "God" was the biggest mistake: the whole game is guided by Dahlia's attempt to bring God into the world and Alessa preventing this, but the adaptation had the BRILLIANT idea that Alessa's immolation was because she was born from an affair of her mother (who was not married then Alessa was "impure").

5:50 I'm perfectly fine with DmC Devil May Cry because it's outside of the main continuity. My biggest problem with it was the worry over it replacing the original series but now that I know that's not the case I enjoy it even more. And he has a lot of weight he can throw around at the Capcom. And with Sony allowing some of their first party games to go multiplatform I can see some sort of deal being struck. And even if that's not the case an XBox exclusive sequel is better than nothing. Never say never is all I'm saying.

It is a mixture of combining the right elements, with the right amount of originality and with the right timing and have it stand the stress of time. And even then, it is not a smooth sail most of the time. Every successful franchise has had its missteps here and there and the ability to bounce back from them depends on how fast they can admit to the mistakes, how fast they can rectify them and whether the franchise had gained enough momentum up until that point, so as to not come into a halt. From all the above, one can say that the key ingredient is time with a little bit of luck. Film production and game publishing companies don't have either the time to invest in new ideas nor the willingness to take risks nowadays. It is much easier to hijack existing franchises and shape them in their own sociopolitical image instead of building them from the bottom. They think that simply riding the hype of a franchise is enough to guarantee success to a project than basing the success of the project on its own merits, often overestimating the ability of the franchise to take the blow and underestimating (or even completely miscalculating) what made the franchise successful in the first place, which nowadays usually leads to disastrous results.

Gans was a fan. The movie tells its own story. He was going for a mother daughter dynamic, in fact it was the studio who pushed him to add male characters hence the husband going around silent Hill with inspector Gucci. I like the movie.

The thing is: the story of the first Silent Hill movie, besides the fact that makes no fucking sense for the most part, over-semplicates the plot of the first game in a terrible way. One of the most disturbing and unsettling thing about the first game was the lack of explenation, because the plot starts "in media res", only after 2/3 playthrough everything starts to piece together. The movie had the need to explain litterally EVERYTHING, even the fucking siren that you hear in the transition between OtherWorld and Reality now is a... real siren. At the end of the movie there was a complete recap of the story and the backstory, and the ending was a complete mess. Now Alessa is the bad guy, no God, no ritual, she just made a deal with the "Devil", basically, and that pact created an alternate dimention. Now the town doesn't have any pre-existent spiritual power, it's just a normal town. I would have liked a completely new story set in the town, like di Assassin's Creed movie did: a new story in the same setting.

Just like how two great Silent Hill concepts were wasted (prisoner and soldier), a Silent Hill starring a mother IS a great concept. The problem is that the like those examples, it ends up being... wasted potential. On top of that, why can't it be a mom and dad saving their kid in Silent Hill? It really bothers me, Silent Hill games have best plots (1,2 and 3, never played later games) I've ever seen in video games. And they are actually easy to adapt in my opinion because everything you need just there story, characters and monster designs, only add some dialogues and action scenes. How these people think, they should improve already perfect story baffels me. Besides changing main character's gender, which the reason is stupid as hell, the movies plot and characters are terrible. Dahlia is sympathetic, wth? I wonder what Kojima's _Silent Hills_ would have been like since he writes female characters on plays of classic female archetypes. Sniper Wolf looked like the babe for nerd but she never acknowledges Otakon. Fortune was a self-aware take on the tragic female who indulges in her misery. Eva was the anti-Bond girl, seducing the hero while he thinks he's saving her. Sunny deconstructs the awkward genius kid by showing how messed up she'd be. Paz looks like the pure all-loving child but that's just an act to worm her way into the hero's heart. Heck, Quiet is a deconstruction of the sexy fanservice action babe since she has to dress that way or die and puts on an aire of danger to keep men from ogling her. Such tropperific writing means he saw the future how it would be.

Okay, fine - not something that uncommon in the usual game to movie screen transition. But what I really disliked about the Silent Hill movie was the Scooby Doo ending that left absolutely nothing to the imagination. Interpretation has always been key to what made the horror of Silent Hill so impactful, and none of the games, not even the crappy ones, required a little girl to spoon-feed the player the relevance of all they had witnessed, come the end!

It was more in service of his other point, that trying to replace what's already established and beloved instead of building on the foundation just pisses fans off and creates a lot of hostility. He mentioned before showcasing all the bad examples that people where okay with The Bureau once they knew more classic XCOM type games where coming and that it wasn't replacing those.
