Plot Twist: That ship was actually radioing the aircrafts this whole time - and the reason it kept floating was because it was empty with reinforeced plate mail. It was a Q-Ship.

It's got to be nerve-wracking for a merchant crew to know there's a submarine following them, not knowing if the patrolling aircraft succeeded in driving it off or sinking it with depth charges. Especially with it happening multiple times. Then the aircraft leave and you're stuck waiting to see if there's a torpedo with your name on it. I don't envy anyone in that position.

There's a little bug where the crew gets stuck in their "excited/fearful" voices, it's the same in SH4 (There's actually a SH4 mod called "Stop the Shouting" 🙂)

Mate, I've never played this game, but this series is super! Love the story telling. I like this level of tech too, all clunky analog stuff. hahaha. Different from Cold Water series.

That freighter captain gave zero fucks. Like with the constant air attacks they probably could have gotten away but it’s almost like they were more worried about fuel burn and on time delivery rather than the boat filled with Germans and ill intent openly braving half the RAF to get at them. “Sir can we please just go away from the nazis?” “And risk my reputation for prompt and polite service not to mentionmy wallet? Fuel oil is expensive, I’d rather get torpedoed and put in a claim.”

Crumbs, the calm water and the periscope (and its wake) several metres out doesn’t half make me nervous, remembering this game. Maybe a graphical thing but looks glaringly obvious to any external observers. I used to just have them above the waterline 😬

I would dash for for Salamis. Only 1 eel (or fish) could sink a ship with insane amount of luck (within this game, naturally). It could certainly sink a ship of 100m length or less.

1 eel should sink a freighter of less than 3,000 tons. But U-boats would normally head for home with only 1 eel left in the stern tube, keeping that for self defence.

I picked up Dot mod for cold waters again. And the narwhal is almost easy mode, but I do miss the top speed and 4 wires of the LA's. I have tried the Soviet side, but had to edit the files to allow me to pick an advanced sub, not good enough to run a tango or foxtrot

Taking high risks with finishing off that ship with the gun knowing that there might be planes around while also the merchant was armed. Firing that deck gun at dusk would certainly make it easy for the planes to home in. If I was part of your crew I would be angry that you just didn't use the last stern torpedo which involves a lot less risk and would mean a trip home. Even continuing with also just one stern torpedo would seem futile.

The deck gun and flak guns on those submarines were made specifically to withstand being submerged, and had extra protection against corrosion and rust. Far as I know, they replaced a lot of the exposed steel parts with brass, chrome lined the bore, and painted over everything else with a thick layer of paint.
