Sinking those two junks would vastly improve crew morale after being on the receiving end of all that depth charging. USS Salmon badly pummeled, but she survived to fight another day. Well done, Capt Taff "Buck O'Hare" !!!! The boat has an entirely different look with the upgrades and a new conning tower. I hear that "Tokyo Rose" has claimed that USS Salmon was sunk, much to the amusement of the crew!

Taff, one thing that caused me some concern. Especially when the sea is flat calm, leaving your periscope up so long is like saying to the enemy, "Here I am! Shoot me!". Better to have short looks, then down periscope, all the while setting up your firing solution.

@@papasmurfette007 Actually, you may have noted that when a Japanese destroyer is making a depth charge run, USS Salmon has turned to a course about 90 degrees from the destroyer's course and has temporarily increased speed. That evasion tactic is possible for two reasons: 1) a submarine can turn faster than a destroyer, and 2) exploding depth charges cause so much sound disturbance in the water that the destroyer's sonar temporarily loses a fix on the submarine's location. It's a cat and mouse game where the mouse (the sub) has a couple advantages. Of course, timing is very important.

Holy hell, Taff, I thought for sure you were dead meat with all those depth charges hitting so close! One tip with those cuties (and all torpedoes really)- you don't have to be at periscope depth to launch torpedoes, you just need to be above 100ft.

The test depth of the Salmon-class submarine is 76m (250 ft), you should have to dive your submarine deeper so enemies' depth charges would take longer time to be around you and you would have more time to evade.

:) for those wondering, the "4 inch 50 caliber" gun in USN parlance meant that the gun fired a 4 inch diameter projectile and the length of the barrel was 50 calibers, a little different than what you may think.

Don't forget to rearrange the crew before setting out again, refit messed it up as usual, emptying the 1st and part of the 3rd watch and AA guns. You can always hire more crew by dragging them from the crew tab next to the medals and promotions. Also, when refitting the deck gun you missed the dual deck gun/AA gun mounting option which gives a 3rd AA gun on the deck.

Tense episode taff, very tense.. this one saw a great game of cat and mouse in regards of being hunted by enemy destroyers, the horrors and terror of depth charges was rife in this one but the fortunes of good fate smiled upon you greatly and the fog of war decided you would live.. so that's something we can be thankful for. The fog of war rarely gives you a second chances and favours so we can be grateful for the mercy it gave us. A few dozen tons of sampan or fishing boat transporting arms or gun crews and radio units are still very much welcome to the tally, so.. at least you came home with kills, you still did the vital task of following your duty. Congratulations on surviving a cat and mouse encounter with the enemy, and with the tide of war turning in our favour.. there's going to be no shortage of more good news. Great episode, excellent.. keep up these epic episodes and well done mate 👏 👍

@@ericjustice5742 ...🍺🍺🍺 ...yeaahhh..but next time try to postion yourself in front of the task group and hiding underwater at the maximum depth possible let them run over you. When the first destroyer runs past you try gently approaching the surface and with intermittent engine usage cycling between stop / slow and using the hydrophon position your boat towards the center where the big prizes are...float in neutral buoyancy state near PD depth without engines and peak at them with your periscope for no more than 5- 6 seconds ...just enough to feed your weapon officer with some useful data giving him a chance to start working with the knobs of the TDC ...if you are playing carefully you can achieve an attack position where at the bow you have a worthy target located in one of the outer lines while your stern tubes are directly pointed towards the big ship in the center...after releasing your torpedoes simultaneously at two targets initiate immediately an emergency dive to the maximum depth your boat status allows you...start the emergency dive with your engines at full speed but cutt them off after the negative movement has started and just let the boat plummet in free fall towards the deep ...initiate as soon as possible the torpedoe tubes reloading process....by now your targets had received your x-mas presents and are ready to start their descent towards the bottom with considerable noise accompanied by the noises generated by the awakened destroyer s who are running up and down throwing depth charges randomly....take advantage of this cacophony situation and start creeping towards the exit which is the opposite direction relative to the task force direction of travel at the slowest speed setting which in the S - class or on the Gato/ Balao is 2-3 knots...Put the crew in their bunks , order the galley to start preparing the special meal and keep that way till morning constantly monitoring your surroundings by hydrophon. I even recommend executing a 180 degree turn and start the creeping in revers with your hydrophon pointed towards the japs and your propellers noise masked by your own boat ...But that would be me.😁😁😁🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👍

It was very nerve-wracking not only for me but also for the entire crew. The ship resembles Swiss cheese. More fault lights are red, the minority are functional. After the deep-sea attacks, the crew stoically repelled the planes' attacks as if they were on a kayak trip. All torpedo tubes blocked. Only the cannon fires. The captain was still optimistic, as if he were unsinkable and he probably had an idea to attack the aircraft carrier and battleships with this one gun, but he couldn't catch up with them. Oh my goodness!!

If we compare test depths of some common WW2 sub classes it seems that U-boats definitely take the medal as the deep divers. Type VII U boat (Germany): 230m S-class submarine (UK): 106m Gato class submarine (US): 90m. Gato vs the others isn't a fair comparison however, as the Gatos are much larger and have much better surface performance and range, befitting their role as a fleet submarine.
