This was one of the most controversial Christmas movies ever made, as parents had started to protest the film as they didn't like to see Santa Claus as a crazed serial killer going on a rampage on Christmas. It was in theaters for 2 weeks, Where it was finally pulled and banned from every theater across the US, then a few years later, it would be released on VHS and has become a cult classic.

Yep. Like always, some morons got upset. They got angry when Ahnold threw the Hot Terminator lady through some bath stalls and rammed her head into a toilet bowl and breaking it.

Can confirm: I worked in a theater in the '80s and we were told to beware of bomb threats. Never got any, but it sure was good for business because that theater was full of teenagers for several weeks. (They loved the antlers bit.)

On the Shout/ Scream Factory collectors edition of Krampus the naughty cut basically the directors cut. On the bonus features Michael Dorothy talks about that kind of stuff. He says every horror Christmas movie ever made has been meant with controversy and boycotts. He said basically you can make a horror movie about any holiday and you are fine. But you make one about Christmas you are suddenly the Antichrist. Then they showed newspaper articles and things the basic. Theme of all of them was what's wrong with these people they need Jesus in their life. But to Michael Doherty he did not care he's like cool free publicity. He also talked about the music in horror Christmas movies he said. That hardly anyone wants their jolly Christmas music in a movie where people are getting murdered. So they may have to make up their own music and Christmas songs.

Yes, there IS a slasher called YOU BETTER WATCH OUT (1980), later retitled CHRISTMAS EVIL. It's an indie about a boy who grows up to become a Santa who kills people who don't have the Christmas spirit. It's much better and more socially-conscious than the plot suggests, and the ending is...incredible.

Better Watch Out IS a great Christmas horror movie as well as Santa's Slay, Jack Frost 1 & 2 (not the comedies) and Silent Night... Elf, Bad Santa, and Christmas Vacation are 3 great holiday comedies (along with Home Alone of course 😀).

So glad you viewed this! The only other one in the series I would recommend is the remake- which is absolutely nothing like the original- but equally as good and modern so gorier and darker. Always a pleasure watching your reactions cause you’re so blunt and we need more like you keeping it real.

I always thought to myself that this movie couldn’t possibly be controversial or shocking, but I was surprised how this tried to be disturbing and a (failed) social commentary on trauma.

Agreed. I'd say Part 2's probably the only one really worth watching, as well. Better Watch Out tried too hard to be a Cronenberg film and suffered for it. Initiation has nothing to do with the rest of the series, even if it is a decent film nonetheless. The Toymaker . . . exists (I mean, they tried something new and it just didn't work. Maybe if somebody tried the concept again nowadays it might work, but just comes off as a by-the-numbers horror film). The remake has nothing to do with the original beyond "killer Santa" and is just brutal and bloody. Part 2 on the other hand, seemed self aware at times and it was awesome for it. The original might be the best, but Part 2's my favorite. It's also markedly less depressing than the first (I found it depressing anyways; all of this felt real as hell. Horrific, tragic childhood trauma followed by a tragic childhood with a horrific "mother" figure and a look at how someone might just snap and whip up a yuletide massacre), IMO.

If one wants to go way back in the history of Yuletide slashers (and slasher films in general), one of the earliest examples is "Silent Night, Bloody Night" (1972), featuring John Carradine and several Warhol superstars including Mary Woronov, which was filmed in 1970 (even before Mario Bava's "A Bay of Blood" began production the following year), and released two years before "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the very similar "Black Christmas" (both from 1974). It has most of the ingredients that would later become codified as a general formula in "Halloween" (1978), from the mysterious killer connected with a past traumatic event escaping from an asylum, to the thematic association with a particular holiday, to the presence of a final girl. Strangely enough, there was even another made-for-TV Christmas-themed slasher film also released in 1972 called "Home for the Holidays," featuring Sally Field (though I have yet to see that one).

There's a blu-ray collection that just came out, like, today -- SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT (3-FILM COLLECTION) of sequels 3-5. Each flick has a buttload of extras, commentaries, etc, and surprisingly affordable ($11.99), though I don't know if you're a physical media collector or not, but just now this set exists, if you're interested in the rest of the franchise, and can;'t find them streaming. The first and second films are on blu also, but from a different distributor (Scream Factory, genre sub-label of Shout! Factory, still in print too). And can you believe the first flick got remade in 2012, under the shortened title, SILENT NIGHT.

Since you brought up Krampus I have the Shout / Scream Factory collectors edition of Krampus the naughty cut. Basically the directors cut I bring it up because on the bonus features it's writer and director. Michael Doherty talks about the hardships of making Christmas horror movies. And everything that goes along with it you think it would be easy but it's not because. This goes towards the music no one or hardly anyone wants their jolly Christmas music in a movie where people get murdered. So thats why in movies like this they tend to make up their own Christmas music or songs. Because hardly any one wants their music to be played in a horror movie where people get murdered. Then this goes to why there are hardly any horror movies about Christmas. Because he States and provides evidence you can make a horror movie around any holiday and be fine but you make it about Christmas. Then people literally call you the anti Christ then they showed actual newspaper articles and reviews. Pretty much the constant theme was what's wrong with these people they need Jesus in their life. All because they made a horror movie that takes place on Christmas. So you need a thick skin to make a horror movie about Christmas because you need to expect and people will boy cut your movie and try to get it removed. Wich is actually backed up black Christmas 1974 people tried to go get it removed and everything black Xmas/ black Christmas 2006 I remember people on the news boycotting it outside of movie theaters. This and every horror movie about Christmas gets the same result people complaining and trying to get it removed. So there's some answers to why things happen to horror movies about Christmas. Regarding what music is played and sang or when they are released or not released or if they are removed from any platform like theaters or whatever. Now about this movie let's see he seen Santa Claus kill his parents. Then the head nun did nothing to help him get over that trauma. Then she literally beat into him when someone naughty to you punish them. That's literally and figuratively not the right way to handle that situation. Thats how you make a future time bomb who's going to snap and kill people or punish them. Then how about his little brother he got the same treatment as he did thats all I will say. I mean it worked for his brother so what can go wrong for his younger brother.

"will boy cut your movie" I think you mean 'boycott Also, Black Christmas 1974. You forgot to capitalize both. Last sentence sounds like a question so you need a ? instead of a .
