This Movie went through several rewrites, copyright issues and tragedies: -The Movie was originally called "Ghost Smashers" and was set in the future but they decided on "Ghostbusters" and that a present day setting would be easier on the budget. -Unfortunately there was a show from the 1970s called "The Ghost Busters" which Columbia had to pay a hefty fee to allow them to use as well as a cut of revenue. -This was originally going to release in 1982 and John Belushi was going to play Peter Venkman however Belushi died of a drug overdose in 1982. -Speaking of original castings Winston Zeddmore was written for Eddie Murphy but Murphy opted to do Beverly Hills Cop instead. Both Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop would end up being the top 2 highest grossing movies of 1984 with BHC barely edging Ghostbusters out. -Before Bill Murray signed on Chevy Chase and Michael Keaton were considered for the role of Peter Venkman after John Belushi's death. -Bill Murray only agreed to do the Movie if Columbia distributed an adaptation of the book The Razor's Edge which he would star in.

When Egon was under the desk he was fixing her computer. Offices often had full PC's with a tower and they were often kept under the desk on the floor to free up space on the desk. People fixing computer problems back then were always under desks. That's why she said "You're very handy". Because he fixed her computer. The sexual thing was still implied though because people usually didn't sit at the desk while someone was under it. Esp. if she were wearing a skirt.

I'm one of those old timey people you mentioned... I was 11yo when this movie came out, and my family and a couple of my sixth grade friends stood in line for hours at the local bowling alley/cinema to see this. We all loved it! I'm sure I saw it a couple more times in the theaters, and we saw it dozens of more times over the years on VHS and movie channels (HBO, etc.). My buddies and I would constantly repeat the lines back and forth with each other, we listened to the soundtrack, bought posters and t-shirts with the Ghostbusters symbol on it, etc. Ghostbusters was quite the cultural phenomenon growing up. Even to this day I have the movie on 4K disc and watch it at least once a year (usually around Halloween). I'm glad you guys enjoyed the movie and appreciated the effects. They were quite groundbreaking back in the day (and hold up fairly well even now).

Interesting that they keep discussing the rating system because the PG-13 rating debuted the very next year (1985), partially because of spicy comedies like this but mostly because of the graphic violence specifically in the two movies Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which were both rated PG and both drew major fire from parents. Great reaction, great collab, really enjoyed it!

Actually it debuted the same year, which was later that August, due to the backlash surrounding another film that came out that same week, Gremlins, as well as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which were both films considered to be too intense for younger audiences but not violent enough for an R rating

Edit: Turns out I was mistaken about the budget. I seem to recall hearing that the budget was tight. And, while the special effects fit the goofy nature of the film, they weren't really cutting edge in any way. They were well done, and used very well to service the story. But they were pretty simple, actually. Corridor Crew did a reaction, and they respected the craftsmanship. But, they pointed out how they were mostly pretty basic techniques. I'm not bashing on the movie. It's one of my favorites. It holds together, and it's a lot of fun.

This really wasn't made with kids in mind. This was from the creative team behind Animal House, Meatballs, and Stripes. If you look at some of the deleted scenes and the original script, there were way more sex jokes that didn't make it to the screen. However, those of us who were kids at the time latched onto this movie hard, partially because of the cartoon adaptation the Real Ghostbusters, which was a better cartoon than it had any right to be. I was one of many kids who was scared of the dark and refused to go to bed unless I had my toy proton pack next to me to fight off ghosts.

Yes, you said what I just said a few minutes ago, but a month earlier. GHOSTBUSTERS and its 1989 sequel are first and foremost slob comedies influenced heavily by the National Lampoon, SCTV and SNL. Obviously, the won't understand the context, but they don't seem to realize that the fantasy elements are not what makes this movie great, it's the juxtaposition between the heaviness of the stakes and the lowbrow antics of the characters.

I was born the year it was released in theaters, so I didn't get a chance to watch it until a few years later on a friday/Saturday movie night and recorded it on vhs. That scene of Ray getting ducked off by a ghost was cut so I didn't know it existed until I upgraded to a dvd version in a double pack with at the time the only sequel to the original. (It was the late 90's/early 2000's, so the other sequels and the video game many consider to be the true ghostbusters 3 until Afterlife was released weren't even a thing yet.) Highly reccomend you play the video game BTW, especially after watching Ghostbusters 2. As someone who saw this movie in the theater, when I was 7, I cant convey to you how many times I've watched it, and How often I quote it. Like "Nice shootin' Tex" when someone misses a shot, or when someone says Oh no, I respond with, "What did you do Ray?". As many times as I've seen this movie every time I watch it I find something new. Definitely watch the sequels 2 is not as good, but still fun, Afterlife is AMAZING, Frozen Empire is Great, the reboot is even worth a look, as long as you realize it is completely separate from all the others.

I was only a couple years older when I saw GB in the theaters and I have the same reactions to missed shots and people saying "on no" - LOL When I make a mistake or do something boneheaded I'll say "The flowers are still standing". "They go up" is used in reference to stairs all the time. Other lines that I've used in conversation over the years "Back off man, I'm a scientist" "This reminds me of the time you tried to drill a whole through your head" "Yes, have some" "Mother puss bucket" "I'm in the middle of something here Ray", etc. etc. 😁

Growing up in the 80's there was a cartoon called The Real Ghostbusters it ran for 10 seasons and was set between ghostbusters 1 & 2 I'd watch it all the time and when I was 8 I finally got to watch this film on VHS and literally a week later my Dad took me to see Ghostbusters 2 at the theater Great times the cartoon and the original movie was popular with kids my age and the films are timeless. The 2nd film is not as good but has a huge place in my heart. Definitely watch it and the later sequels Afterlife and Frozen Empire as they follow on from the originals. Ghostbusters 2016 that was a reboot that failed because it was trash.

This opened the same night as "Gremlins" and beat it out at the box office everywhere but New York where they were so pissed off at how the shoot tied up traffic no one wanted to see it. Saw it when it came out in '84 in 70mm and was confused why these comedy greats were doing a big special effects movie. P.S. Angelina you look FANTASTIC!

I had this in vhs at the age where you can see movies over and over. This was long before Netflix, vhs was king. I had this movie practically memorized. … have. I got into the cartoon, the toys, I still have the car, etc. as for what else to watch… #2 is pretty good. Not AS good, but good. The all-female one…. Isn’t as bad as many people say, but it’s not great. GB Afterlife IS great, and makes a wonderful sequel to (1 and 2) but I still haven’t seen frozen empire.

I saw this in the theater as a child, and was sooo scared by that first ghost I hid under the seats for almost the rest of the whole movie. My parents were sooo pissed off that the general attitude of the day was YEA SURE TAKE YOUR LIL KIDS- ITS GREAT! (wrong). It took a lot of convincing but later during the movie they told me it wasn’t scary anymore like 5 or six times and I started watching again when it was almost over 😮
