Classic recording of the Class J 4-8-4 highballing into Rural Retreat VA and the mournful sound of the 3 chime baritone whistle on the Bristol line!

That last whistle at the end brought a tear to my eye. Like the Goliaths last breath...

I'm pretty sure I met the woman playing in the background. I'm from Marion (great grandfather had a big part in the Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat) and grew up Lutheran, but my confirmation was held at Grace.

The recording was actually done three days later on the 27th. Apparently, Links original recording on the 24th had technical flaws in it. So they went back, and had her play the organ again. The tape is actually an edit of both versions

Does anyone know if the video of the Southern Crescent pulling into Alexandria is on KZbin?
@RailPreserver2K5 жыл бұрын
I know I'm being nitpicky but what would have made it perfect is if you stood in the exact same spot and in the same position that Winston stood in to take the picture of the train passing the depot

The 611 has been restored and makes excursions. Search J 611 and you can get a schedule- and perhaps take a ride.

Did 611 spend the night at Rural Retreat? Based on the video it looks like she arrived late in the evening and the later footage appears to be early morning before transitioning back to a night shot.

This trip the 611 started out of Bristol and headed to Roanoke, VA. The train headed during the night back to Bristol, through Rural Retreat. There is footage from trips Manassas to Front Royal, and Roanoke to Pulaski. During the years 1992-93, I virtually went out and videoed every trip in Virginia. So I was able to fill in lots of needed footage in this presentation. I certainly thank you for watching this video!

And now in 2021, we tolerate dangerous criminals to be set free on our streets so they can run us down at our Christmas parades.
