Silent Running's terrific score is by composer Peter Schickele, better known for his comedic alter-ego, P.D.Q. Bach. I played in the orchestra for the scoring session. During a break they played back the music for the final scene, which we had just recorded. As the camera pulls away from the doomed spaceship, Valley Forge, the music grows in volume and intensity and then abruptly cuts off just before the bomb detonates. The playback had dialogue but no sound effects as they had not yet been added, so the explosion occurred in dead silence (as it would have been in the vacuum of space). Even though the musicians in the session had no idea of the film's story line (we only saw disconnected scenes), THAT scene was still emotionally devastating. Of course, I went to see the movie when it was released and was disappointed to find that the sound of a huge explosion had been added, which diluted much of the scene's emotional impact that the silence had created during the recording session.

Yes I totally agree. I reckon movie goers expected to hear a big explosion even out in the vacuum of space cuz sound effects sells. However, there were some scenes in Star Trek O.S. episodes where a ship would explode out in space and there would be complete silence on their viewing screen until the Enterprise would receive the shock waves and rocked her around and the crew.

I have this movie in my Vudu collection. I was born in 1970, and first time I watched this was back in the early 1980s. This is one of my favorite sci-fi films along with Westworld, Soylent Green, and Logan's Run. I just finished watching this film again back in January. Truly so relevant to whats going on in our planet and how mankind is on pace to destroying the only home we have sad to say. Glad I took Earth Sciences courses in college. Got so more educated about the enviroment and how we must do all we can to take good care of the planet for our kids and grandkids. This film each time I watch it is a very easy hour and half to watch, for any time of the day or night or week. I recommend this to kids to give them an idea science is cool and the scenarios that could happen if we do not take care of our planet.

@@mikebasil4832 I just watched this movie back in January for the manyth time and its always a great educational film. If I was to ever see Bruce Dern, I would love to thank him for doing such a great role on this. Loved how his character had a love for the domes and the animals and enviroment. I am a big rabbit lover so the scenes with the rabbits in the domes melts my heart every time and the pet hawk. I probally would of not done the same way of killing my fellow shipmates like he did in the movie, but he had to do what he had to do to protect the only dome left from mankind;s destructive behavior. Ending was very sad, I cried again when I watched that.

@@themoderatescorner7643 I actually did get to meet Bruce Dern during a movie shoot in Arizona back in 1987. I waited for an open moment and approached him and said, "Mr. Dern, I just wanted to say that your performance in Silent Running was brilliant. You should have won an Oscar for it." He looked kinda surprised I would mention that 16 years after the fact, but he said, "Thank you. I appreciate that." Nice guy. That was my celebrity encounter.

“I just can’t do it anymore….” Loved it decades ago. Still do. Made for a million dollars- such a budget. Now we’ve got global warming to make this relevant again. And larger budgets for scripts on point if we aren’t too afraid of reality. Lowell’s descent into madness is too slow for so many who can’t sit through this even once. That can be tweaked in an update. Maybe with an AI live interest for Lowell (posing even more critical questions appropriate for the 21st century). I wonder if our species will make it much beyond 2199, at times. We deny reality and pursue verbal immediate interests while sacrificing our children’s futures, and so much other life on this planet. I was very depressed when I saw this totally by accident on late night TV (before in demand services, etc), at 2 a.m. Am feeling a bit full circle as I write this- but I meet young people intent on not giving up. I hope they can succeed (with what actually matters). I am tapped out but I did a few decades of trying. Maybe that was enough; no regrets (you can only try your best). Peace.

Edit: can’t edit here but meant AI “❤ interest” (though whether she/he/they should be considered “alive” - my initial wording here - might be itself a good question). Then “our verbal interests” was intended to be “VENAL interests.” Intelligent people may not even notice the typos (or “speedy readers” seeing my point as OBVIOUS will easily move past my obvious carelessness).
