This movie introduced me to the greatness of Bruce Dern. What an amazing actor. Simply put, he's one of the best character actors Hollywood ever had! His performance in this "small budget" movie was Oscar worthy.....if not the Oscar for Best Actor, for sure! This is one very special movie that every one should see, at least once!

I've been on a binge of 70s Sci Fi movies, just discovered Silent Running. How in the Hell is this movie not talked about more? From a eerily relatable environmental message throughout the film to Bruce Dern's incredible acting, this scene is no exception.
@KevinSolis19643 жыл бұрын
Blake, I'm old enough to have seen this in the 70's. It was very much talked about then. To round out your 70's movies along an environmental theme look at Soylent Green, (pay attention to the year of the oceanographic study), and Rollerball, about extreme corporatism. Glad that the younger generation are rediscovering these movies and societal themes. Make sure you guys solve them this time. :-)

Star Wars mania eclipsed it. Up till then this was the best young audience space movie. 2001 was too cerebral for most viewers and the VFX were still the pristine white NASA style smooth ships like Star Trek. This was an indie film backed by Coppola using the million dollar project....same one that produced American Graffiti. A lot of the visuals in SW came from photography here...especially the escape pod launch (nearly a direct copy). R2D2 was Huey Dewey and Louie the lovable little droid that were clever, loyal and cute. The story idea is a bit dumb, as it would have been easier to keep the preserves in domes on earth...but like most good Bruce Dern flix...he cracks up great.

His crewmates reactions are priceless. They totally do not get it. Like people I know who would rather go to Disneyland and a nice restaurant than take a walk in nature. They are completely cut off from nature, and they think the Bruce Dern character is crazy.
@mikemanners10697 жыл бұрын
Walking in Nature is fine until you get an infected Spider Bite or Spotted MT Fever from a Tick Bite. There are also Animal Predators to consider. Also natural blights that kill crops and livestock. Sunstroke or Frostbite? Nature while beautiful at times is not Benign but I think I get the point you are making.
@janetsenour19957 жыл бұрын
I know; nature doesn't care if you live or die. It just is. But we are part of nature, something that "civilized" humans have forgotten. You go out there and take your chances. It's not all pretty butterflies and singing birds.
@janetsenour19957 жыл бұрын
Sure. Nature doesn't care if you live or die. It just is. But we are part of nature whether we realize it or not. It is better to learn how to live with nature than try to eradicate it . . . which is what humans have been doing, and why we are in this disaster nowk.
@sparrowlt6 жыл бұрын
the movie proposes a more complex situation.. today there is several reasons to save forrest and wild life.. and of them its that we are part of the ecosystem and endangering it we are infact endangering ourselves... But in this movie ..at this point humankind has somehow outgrown nature.. the human being is suposed to be totally self-suficient..it can grow or syntethize food without nature.. and aparenty everyone is happy (its 23ºC everywhere you go , there is no wars and everyone has a job)..so with all that it seems easier to humans to forget about nature or not understanding the big deal

No one does 'crazy' like Bruce Dern Last night I saw a promo for Bruce Dern's latest movie (or TV series?) and he is, to borrow from Paul Simon STILL crazy after all these years. Nearly 50 to be exact. Had to thank an old friend Gary G -- for sharing on his Facebook page the original (1972) poster for SILENT RUNNING. [I responded] Saw it at the 'Rosebank Theater' in Bermuda -- the year I fell in love with the girl next door -- "Irene" from Winnipeg. So many memorable things, from the adorable robots (Huey, Duey and Louie) to Joan Baez singing two songs. There was a balance to the casting -- Bruce Dern as the hero is hug-a-tree crazy, and his co-workers are normal guys -- each with a sense of humor. The scene in the 'kitchen' with Bruce eating a melon "that I grew!!! -- not this artificial stuff" that [everyone's] eating. I loved this movie so much! Thanks, old friend, for sharing.

Exactly! But here my message Hi friends, I have an important message to share with you. We are seeing very negative forces and evil influences throughout the World. The globalist, elite, politicians, idols, entertainers, etc... are pushing a global movement for "One World Religion, One World Government, One World Currency" etc... They accomplish their plans by under what is called "Order Out of Chaos" The create chaos situations and other evil doings to distract the people, and then implement order from this chaos. However, that order costs you your freedom, your rights, money, and other things everytime. I'm sending out a global message to make you aware of this situation and also information on how to protect your personal freedom and also to join us with love, peace, and harmony. First, I want you to understand that I'm not concerned about you relegious beliefs, what relegion you follow, or even if you are atheist. GOD loves all his children, and sent many meesengers throughout time to help us. From Buddah, Mohammed, etc... to the very important Jesus Christ the LORD. I hope you realize GOD is REAL and LOVES YOU. I want you to realize the LORD is coming very soon. Any day or week now, but we don't know exactly when. GOD must step in now, as we have gone to far away from loving one another, helping one another, and our world is a mess. Please see my KZbin videos that not only prove GOD is real but also that the LORD is coming soon to help us. Just look around.... we have masks everywhere, drug issues abound, rioting, fighting, currency shortages, soda can shortages, food shortages have begun and will increase, stock market is going to collapse, etc etc... Bill Gates, evil spirit realm, and elite under the thumb of evil are driving this madness. Bill Gates even has a patent WD 060606 to use your body for currency and mind control. Please DO NOT accept the MARK OF THE BEAST. DO not get the Vaccine shot as it is poison. Please get with GOD, as he loves you. Choose the love of GOD versus the evil beast system.
