Yes, the wind screen did work quite well. Though a couple of days later, it became very windy, and then there was quite a bit of wind noise from the microphone. So it isn't perfect. But that is understandable. The lavalier microphone is designed to be used in a studio inside a building for interviews. It isn't meant to be used outside while driving an e-bike.

@@PlanetDoug Thanks Doug.Great to hear from you again. Not really, as I have mentioned earlier that since I missed walking around Yangon on my first trip, I will just do that on this trip. I have set aside 4 days by doing only this! And perhaps the next 2 days I will go to the outskirts. Are there any interesting places that you could suggest that I visit, besides the pagodas? So this is a 6 days trip for me as some family commitments and constraints does not allow me to be away for too long stretch at a time. But the good news is I am able to make several short trips off and on like I am doing now. Perhaps Mandalay (Airasia has a direct flight there from KL) could be next.

Loved this episode! Great info on the e-bike rental, yeah it was like super silent, even the sound of the hoofs from the horse drawn carriages were louder! They really seem like a lot of fun to ride... great work riding on the loose sandy bits too... Myanmar seems like an excellent country for dirtbikes! The sound and stabilisation of the gopro was amazing too!

Riding the e-bike was a lot of fun. For you, it would feel like a child's toy, though, compared to what you normally drive. 🙂 As for the GoPro, yes, I've been happy with the stabilization and the audio now that I use an external microphone. I know that my Panasonic would provide better image quality and the ability to zoom in on things, but it's tough to put down the GoPro and pick up a full-sized camera. Once you get used to the ease of use of the GoPro, it's hard to switch back.

E-bikes are definitely the way of the future, sans dino juice and pollution... but I would really miss a petrol bikes sound.... thats the weirdest thing ever.... i remember when you went by the carriages even the sound of the hooves on the tarmac could be heard over the bike haha...

The building you were in is the exact building that I studied for polytechnic entrance exam 20 years ago. It was build around 80s or 90s, during previous regime of extreme poverty. That's these buildings are so old and abandoned by people since too outdated. You were right that the land is extremely expensive and premium in Myanmar, The new buildings right next to it, the condo rooms are starting from like US$ millions plus. I guess sooner or later that old building will be demolished and rebuild as condo or shopping mall. I guess you can understand why such difference is due to different time in history (poor time vs rich time, yet the building is the same, but will no longer be the same, like all other developing south east Asian countries) :)

I've come to really enjoy having the GoPro and using it. Simply being in a new country and trying to record the experience on video is difficult enough without having to worry about a big camera with all kinds of settings. So the GoPro fits in nicely. I don't have to do anything except turn it on. Everything is in focus. The field of view is so wide that it captures everything. With the microphone, the audio is acceptable. So I don't have to think about the camera hardly at all. I really regret buying the Panasonic G85 now. I think if I had bought the GoPro first, I never would have bought the Panasonic. Once I got in the habit of using the GoPro, I never used took the Panasonic out of its bag. Maybe I will again in the future, but I had so much trouble with focusing that it was annoying. The GoPro is much easier to use (and lighter and smaller).

I agree with you. I don't know why, but on this trip, I kind of stuck to myself and didn't make much of an effort to meet and interact with local people. And when I did talk to people, I didn't feel comfortable aiming the camera at them or at both of us. So I didn't record any of those conversations. I'm still getting confidence with shooting video. Hopefully, I can do more of that in the future.

I've often felt that way about scooters in general. I started to drive a scooter in Taiwan a lot when I was living there (as opposed to on a bicycle). And I enjoyed being able to go farther and faster, but it also changed the experience. I didn't see as much of the world around me because I was moving so fast and I had to pay attention to the road. And I couldn't hear things because of the helmet and the loud engine. When walking or riding a bicycle, you have more opportunity to experience what is around you. And it's a lot easier to stop and just take things in. On a scooter, motorcycle, or e-bike, the urge is to keep going and going and cover more ground. It's fun, but it does change how you experience what is around you.

When I was in Maui Hawaii staying in a Airbnb the owner had a spare car and he let me drive it for $20 a day and didn’t even ask me if I had a driving license, he just seem to trust me with it.

That's probably one of the advantages of using Airbnb - you have a chance to get to know the owner of the apartment personally and that can help you get to know the country and do other things. I keep meaning to try Airbnb, but I haven't done it even once yet.

Looking at your gallery makes me wish I took pictures while I was there. They're beautiful pictures. There's a whole different quality to a photograph versus video. But since I started hitting the video record button, I've found it difficult to also take pictures. I particularly like the shots of the river with the single boat going across. That's how I remember the river from my boat trip up to Mandalay.

A silent motorcycle, one of the most stupid, dangerous ideas of all time. Not even on the road 30 seconds & almost in a crash. There's a reason motorcycles are loud....
@PlanetDoug3 жыл бұрын
I've had that experience with a number of electric vehicles in recent years, particularly electric bicycles. They are becoming more and more common, and it's crazy how quiet they are. And they are always moving much faster than you expect. It's very easy to misjudge their speed and get hit by one. And when they come up from behind you, it is always startling. You just don't hear them or see them until they are right there. I met a guy recently who told me that he had drilled holes into the muffler of his motorcycle. And I was so confused by that. Why would anyone do that? But he explained that this modern motorcycle was so quiet that no one could hear him. And that nearly caused accidents. So he drilled a couple of holes to make his engine a bit louder so people would be aware of him. That made sense to me.
