This is a tutorial, start to finish, of how I go about printing and cutting my sticker designs WITHOUT registration marks.
00:00 Intro of the video
00:37 Page Setup
07:08 Adding "bleed" to improve the quality of your finished stickers
09:05 Taking an image from the internet or your computer, and getting it setup to be a sticker
17:45 Choosing printer settings and preparing to print
21:18 Printing the sheet of stickers
24:30 View of my workspace and overall layout
26:55 Printing completed, and setup for cutting
30:59 Laminating the sticker paper (9"x12" Avery laminate used)
37:38 Getting the laminated sticker paper loaded into the Cameo 4
41:30 Choosing cut settings and making the cut
46:44 Verifying the cut, weeding, and end results
In this video we go through everything. Setting up our page in Silhouette Studio, adding a "bleed" to allow for slight deviations in the cut, show how to take an image and get it ready to cut as a sticker, go through printing, laminating, and then cutting the designs.
This works for all of the Silhouette Cameo machines and at least most of this can be used with Cricut machines as well.

You're a literal godsend. I've been having so many issues attempting to laminate with stupid registration marks. I've ruined several otherwise great stickers and lost a lot of materials. Thank you so much for your tutorial!

You're welcome, and glad that this is exciting information. I had only done print and cut work, without registration marks, until about a week ago. I had a small project, that was time sensitive, so only needed about half of the sheet. Since I had the extra room, I decided to try registration marks. Ironically, it cut worse than my non-registration marked projects, and I had to trim all of the project woth scissors. I have no plan to use registration marks again. Lol

Fantastic! Glad that it was able to help. I completely agree. My main reason for figuring out how to cut without registration marks was due to the loss of so much material. Now I can make bigger designs, which are especially helpful with shirts, and I waste so much less material, than I would, otherwise. Thanks for watching.

This was an amazing tutorial. Lately I have been having issues with registration marks so I am definitely going to try this. I really like how you fed the sticker paper with laminate in the laminator that way. I have never tried that before but I will. One thing I do is run it through the laminator the long way (portrait mode) and then run it through again length wise (landscape mode).

@@Stellaaa1989 the most likely case is that you have them grouped. If they're grouped the software treats them like one item, so they would both be cut, or not cut, depending on what you click. If you ungroup them, and then click each individually, it should allow you to choose which cuts and which doesn't.

Good vid, Richard! I've never had much of an issue with the reg marks. But I think I'll try this and see if I can utilize more of the sticker paper, because, in some instances, it would stop me from having to use 2 sheets vs. only one.

That was the main reason that I figured out this method. I was constantly trying projects that were too big for the registration marks, and hated wasting so much material. When I also saw many complain of registration troubles, it made me want to avoid them even more. Even if you don't use this method often, hopefully it helps with your larger projects.

You're welcome. There is slight differences between machines. Once you figure out where your sheet needs to be, on the mat, it should avoid a lot of the issues. (Some machines want it to completely cover the lines on your mat, some want it right on the lines, and some just inside of the lines. So a test to see where yours wants to be and you should be looking good)

I was hesitant to start making videos, but am glad to hear that people seem to be benefitting from them. There are some added advantages to the newer machines, but seem to be mostly for convenience. Such as the vinyl roll holder, and the built in cutter. If you're doing a fair amount of vinyl, from rolls, those might be convenient. Otherwise, if your machine is working well, and you don't "need" the added conveniences, you should be good with what you have.

Thank you. I know a lot about the Cameos and a decent amount about the Curio. I don't know much about the Portrait unfortunately. Realistically it should work very similarly though. Using the same software and overall concept, where it is sending what is on your screen to your machine, the location that it is placed in the software is ideally where it comes out in reality. There are slight inconsistencies in the cutting accuracy of these inexpensive cutters, so they won't be perfect, but I get pretty good results pretty consistently. I have a follow-up video to this one, where I show how to get more accurate cuts, if your machine isn't as accurate. You can always try the registration marks, and compare the two as well. The registration marks seem to work well, for some people, but I know that they are a nightmare for a lot of people as well.

Thank you. That was the main reason that I started creating these videos. I had MANY people complain that the videos that they were finding, often skipped steps, and assumed that you already knew part of the process. I wanted to make sure that nobody was left behind. As far as the sandy glue residue, that doesn't sound familiar. I used Zicotto for a short time. It was very hit-and-miss, in my experience. I didn't like that each sheet seemed to be a gamble, so I ultimately stopped using them. @Richard97402

My sticker paper is water proof. The problem is that the ink isn't waterproof and fades when around UV light. If you're using laser or ecosolvents, then it isn't a problem. Otherwise best to laminate if they will go outside or even near natural light. You would need to do some test cuts, if you wanted to just cut the sticker paper without lamination. I've never done it, because I knew that I wanted the UV and water protection, plus each sticker paper is going to be different. Since I cut mine at a blade depth of 6, I'd probably start at 3 or 4, without lamination, and make adjustments as needed. I'm glad that the video was helpful. If you choose to go without lamination, I'd be curious to hear what settings end up working for you.

@Richard97402
@Richard97402 Жыл бұрын
Without seeing it, I can't say for sure. Each machine has tolerances, and therefore slight differences, from one machine to the next. It should never be "completely off" as you've mentioned, though. I have heard that the Cameo has a ± 1/16" tolerance, so it could potentially be off upto 1/8". Anything more than that, and it sounds like something is wrong. Whether it is how the media is being loaded, the carriage being someone different than it thinks it is, or other potential issues. I'm planning a video, to help dial in this technique, to accommodate for the differences in machines. I've just been slammed this week, so it is a bit slower than I would like. I hope that it is something easy, and is resolved quickly. If not, I hope to get the follow-up video up soon, to help get a more accurate cut.

@@arielwasxxx Yes, you definitely need the proper cut settings for the materials that you are using. Even if we're using the exact same products, there are differences in machines, as well as things like how sharp/new each of our blades are. You'll want to find what works for your materials. I've gotten feedback, that the machines seem to be one of two ways. Either place the paper just inside the borders of the mat, or put the paper on the lines just enough to cover them. If you're only off a tiny bit, it might be that. I've found my cut is quite accurate if I put it right on the lines, but have had a few people tell me there's works great when they are upto the line, but not covering it. There are tolerances to these machines, so they're never perfect, but we can get them quite close.

If things are working correctly, yes. If you are using a Silhouette compatible mat, it should know where the 0:0 point is, in the top left corner. Doing the tape trick, in my part 2 video, will verify where your machine sees that 0:0 starting point. It should be pretty consistent though.

@@Richard97402 thanks for your reply! Yes saw your other video as well, genuis trick! Because it will 0,0 for all jobs and not for the current one only. But regarding the Mat, I assume the machine will not scan the top left corner, it is more a mechanical reference and the mat must be fed always in the same manner?
@Richard97402
@Richard97402 3 ай бұрын
@@EVO_Engineering I'm assuming that you're correct. That it likely turns the wheels a certain amount, which would pull the mat a specific distance. Loading the mat consistently is what will finalize the position. I push my mat against the rightmost notch on the front of the machine, next to the gray arrows. It helps with placement, as well as more accuracy with square-ness.

How do I do this with a holographic laminate? Mine doesn't cut right when I use holographic laminate but cuts fine with regular laminate.
@Richard97402
@Richard97402 2 жыл бұрын
I have, and have used, holographic laminate. What I show, in the video, is exactly the same for holographic. The machine isn't reading or looking for anything, so being shiny, matte, holographic, chrome, etc, doesn't matter because it is just cutting based on where things are in the software.

Hi Richard, I just came across this video and I’m a new subscriber. I have a Cameo Plus and did everything in the video and for some reason, the cut is way off. 😖 What do you think might be the issue?
@Richard97402
@Richard97402 Жыл бұрын
Oh, no. I've heard that some people's machines aren't cutting in the same place. (As far as where zero is on X, and where zero is on Y) If you're lining things up nicely, on the origin lines of your mat, but your machine isn't seeing that as the start point, then the cut wouldn't be great. I cut tape, to find where my origin was, which was right on the lines of my mat, so just lining it up there, has been great. I could make a follow up video, showing the tape trick that I used, for finding where your edges should be.

I can't say for sure, as I haven't used the Portrait.... but realistically, it should. There is still a 0,0 point, where it thinks the corner of your mat/material should be. If it is loaded consistently in the same location, then it should be able to get similar results.

@Richard97402
@Richard97402 2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, and glad that it was helpful. If you cut them... maybe? Since you need the adhesive on the backside, in order for it to function as a sticker, I feel like putting it in a pouch could be problematic. You may be able to split them in half, and place half over the stickers, and set it through a hot laminating machine. I haven't tried it, so can't say for sure though.

@@Richard97402 Hi I did try it and it had some success but the laminate was too slippery to be put through without a mat and cut was not aligned due to movement during cutting. @@techjunkie68smusicandtech56 Glad that you had some success. I definitely wouldn't do cuts like these, without a mat though. The goal is to cut all of the way through, and without a mat, you are risking damaging your machine. You also can't ensure that it is properly lined up, without it being on the mat. You want to make sure that it is in that top left corner of the mat, so the machine knows where to cut.

@@Richard97402 Anyhow, I tried it with hot lamination pouches, doesn't work as expected, because the stickers are vinyl it doesn't adhere well enough, so cold laminating is better if you're using vinyl, only wasted one sheet to try out.

Hi, I have the Tusy heat press. I got so frustrated with it until i stopped using and purchased another. Do you find the temp not to be accurate? When sublimating i had to increase the temp to at least 450 to 460 for it to get hot enough. I contacted Tusy and their response was that I should not be concerned with having to have the temp that high. The quick guide says I should have at abt 385 to 400, if im recalling correctly.

Glad that you enjoyed the video. As far as lamination is concerned, if you can get a good bond between the sticker and the laminate, I don't see a reason that heat should be an issue. Heated lamination is usually for lamination sleeves, which would put laminate over the back of the sticker though. I just switched away from the Avery laminate, that I used in this video, but apply the new product the exact same way. The Avery product didn't do well with UV rays, which basically defeated the entire point of using it. Adhesive laminate (at least the ones that I have used) don't require a machine at all. You can just apply the adhesive. I just like the extra piece of mind that the machine pushed it down.

@@christiansiddons2121 I love the Vvivid brand, and use them for when I do vinyl wraps on cars. They offer laminate in rolls, that I am trying. I've only made 2 sheets of stickers, with it, so far. That being said, the colors have more "depth" to them, and the laminate feels much higher quality. It is a little harder to apply. I cut a piece, the size of my sticker sheet, from the roll. Then I basically apply it how I did in the video. So an extra cut from the roll, and no little tab like the Avery to help peel the backing paper, but otherwise a similar process and feels much higher quality. I'm still doing testing, with it, for longer term durability, but happy so far. This is the Amazon listing that I purchased from. a.co/d/gCIIAfU

Great video! I’ve been using Silhouette for a couple of years and I’ve learned a couple of things from this video. Just from memory, I thought it wouldn’t allow you to cut without the registration marks on it giving you an error message??? Secondly I like that roll of laminate idea, but don’t you think you’d have a lot of waste in the long run because of the size being 12”?
