I like that despite being a titanic d-bag, he clearly has some degree of instinct when assessing people and projects. He’s able to tell Richard isn’t sold on the video chat and knows right away not to invest. There are a lot of characters in this show who are dumb or mean but have something they’re really good at that justifies their existence and I love it

Russ seems loud and foolish, but somehow he always manaages to be absurdly good at reading people. He noticed that Richard was dissatisfied with the direction of his company, his "this guy fucks!" comment regarding Jared, how Russ can somehow could tell Gilfoyle had a fucked up childhood before he had a chance to say anything, and how he was able to discern the unimportance of Bachman and completely ignored him.
