Now that Finland and Sweden are in NATO, it won't be the UK who's going to be in the lead of European NATO forces. It's going to be the Nordics who're going to be in the lead, by their readiness and level of military intelligence coordinated between Norway, Finland and Sweden. To top it off there's more ready hardware and manpower in the Nordics than in the UK, France and Germany combined.
@murphy780118 сағат бұрын
Yeah probably not, given the population of France Germany and the UK is over 210 million people, their economies combined dwarf said Nordics. Also France and the UK are nuclear powers with the ability to project power. I don't see Sweden training on nuclear first strike or shooting down nukes. But have your pretty little dream.
@bigjobs500018 сағат бұрын
With all due respect to our Nordic allies, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, population of all four combined numbers around 27 million. The UK has a population of 70 million. Britain is the number two power in NATO. That is due to experience in warfare, Britain's nuclear deterrent on a submarine fleet, and it's very professional armed services, including special forces. The UK's secret services and intelligence services are also infinitely better than Russia's and the rest of Europe combined. You severely underestimate Britain.

I take on board everything Sir Richard Shirreff is saying and agree with him that should Britain face off against Russia alone we would be in huge trouble. That said, Ukraine has faced off against the "might" of Russia in the beginning with a severe lack of heavy fighting equipment and particularly a tiny, decrepit air force and lack of air defence before that heavy equipment arrived and has caused Russia significant losses. Why would Britain face off against Russia on it's own? That is why we are in NATO! Surely the purpose of NATO is that each nation brings it's own particular strength to the alliance? e.g. Finland and Poland can bring huge armies to bear, Sweden a huge airforce, France and the UK Naval Power and that's not even including the USA and despite all that Trump says, the Americans always do the right thing in the end. It is not in their interest to leave NATO. The USA thrives on being the biggest world player through it's projection of power which ultimately benefits it's economy and prosperity.

The US will not stop its function as the nuclear umbrella of Nato, and it has already plainly clearly threatened Russia during its ongoing war-of-aggression, that a single WMD use would elicit a conventional take-down of all of Ru's forward-reaching (outside its borders) military capability. They are very important, but they shouldn't dominate european security planning and security infrastructure like they do right now. Yes, i also agree that Great Britain should be the leading NATO member in Europe. But the fact is that the only NATO-member that has so far showed true strength and toughnes towards Russia, is Turkey. For examble, back in 2015 when Russia was bombing Syria, on of the russian planes flew in turkish air space. Turkish air deffence shot it down. Turkish military ships are also making sure that not one rusian ship sail through the Bospor. Rest of the NATO-members should also adopt this kind of toughness and will to stand for NATO's security.

If the Warsaw Pact was dismantled and its soldiers withdrew from Eastern Europe, why does NATO still exist and US soldiers still occupy Western Europe?
@betterdonotanswer17 сағат бұрын
That would be impossible since Russia ceased to exist centuries ago, so he probably meant Muscovy, which is the only proper historical English name of Muscovy. The UK has not enough nuclear warheads for successful deterrence, so the best way to avoid war with Muscovy is by supporting the national liberation movements in there. Newly emerged national states can be denuclearized the same way as Ukraine and Belarus before.

Support as long as it takes is not a strategy. It is a slogan. Nothing, absolutely nothing, could be truer. Thank you, General, Sir Richard Shirreff.

Spot on about Russia's interference in Brexit. Russia wants a devided Europe and is doing everything possible to achieve this. Russia as well as China and many other countries have their agents who are born here, many in eastern Germany have links to Russia. The problem is that with the current melting pot of people you don't know who is the enemy of your state.

The enthusiasm with which Sir Richard speaks about the developing defence industrial sector in Ukraine should be a lesson to John Healey and those putting together the UK strategic defence review - flexing the UK economy to develop defence should be a priority for the UK and perhaps the EU too (the Draghi report recommends it I understand)

How has our military and political establishment got so out of touch with the reality of day-to-day British people. There's always money to fight wars but not for improving quality of life.

I think the most heartbreaking reflection of Russian influence on Ukraine, is that they had no fleet for evacuating their wounded. Russia is a Terrible steward of any country.

You, and me could do a peace deal in 24 hours, this is very easy for Trump to do it. Oh yes. The problem is getting Ukraine, and or Russia to stop fighting. That is the hard part. Time will show us who is Trump, and what Trump is and is not.

I keep hearing interviews that bring me back to what seems to be an common occurrence in humanity. Too much peace makes you weak on all fronts. Seems 80 plus years for some countries makes them too reliant on good faith and compromise. Throw in corruption and oligarchs. Urgh. What a mess.

It was said correctly that Putin's regime is criminal and cleptocratic, I reckon. But, one important thing that was missed in that description. Putin's regime has many very strong allies in the West. This is because Putin's regime is cleptocratic and criminal only secondary, but firstly it is highly narcissistic regime. Putin's regime represents the power of people who love spending a lot on themselves. It is regime of people who are in the constant search for more to spend on their own pleasures. It attracts the alike thinkers and there are many of them in the western world. They are essentially and fundamentally pro-Putin, even if he might be temporary seen as inconvenience to them. In their nature though, they are of the same kind and they understand each other very well.

The problem is though that if everyone agrees that we need to scale up the timeframe to do it in a normal recruitment process would be too long The Russians are they say running their economy on a war footing the rest of Europe is not the in lies the issue Is it time for war bonds?

Would not one big difference here be that the UK could strike at Russia? If you are going to imagine Russian missiles striking, the UK, would not the UK launch missles into Russia? Is that not supposed to be the deterrent to keep Russia from acting in such a bad manner?
@18_rabbit19 сағат бұрын
in fact, both the US and UK and others' missiles would be sent Ru's way. Ru will not ever likely dare, therefore
@carmenschumann82618 сағат бұрын
. . . well, the talking point (I assume) was about non-nuclear missiles of RU which can hit UK and for this UK probably has no matching response mode . . .
