Silicone caulk thinned with Naptha is a pretty awesome material- you can tint it any color with oil paints and it dries nice and glossy. Ive used it for vomit, blood, general filth, and for making a silicone paint for silicone masks or other projects. I was testing because I needed a paint that acted like a skin for my Kracken I was building.

Love the video and content, but why is the music so loud that it's deafening, and your voice is so quiet I have to put the volume to full? Then when the music starts, it is way too loud!! Other than that, it's great.

Several times I've had silicone caulk that sat on a shelf too long and it wouldn't cure, it stayed greasy. So I think it's important to make sure you have fresh silicone, if it get's old it might not cure completely or might not cure at all.

Meant to thank you for the tips on silicone caulk. I've just started experimenting with it and I'm finding lots of uses for it. One thing I discovered while mixing it with coffee to make crusty goo for a costumes was that too much coffee in the mix can extend set time to a couple of weeks. Next time I'll grind up something inert like rubber or set up silicone instead to add texture. Thanks again, youdaman!

i know you made this video 2 years ago, but i'm looking for a little assistance. i'm trying to make polyurethane stacked stones (veneer for indoor/outdoor use). the silicone molds online cost over $200 for 3 different look stone molds. i ended up purchasing ABS plastic molds but had to use concrete because the polyurethane wanted to stick too much and the ABS plastic (it was too hard and rigid to get the polyurethane out w/o damaging it). so now i'm looking to make a silicone mold from the concrete casts i made. can i expect to get good results on something of those sizes using silicone and naptha to make my molds? thanks!

Question. I want to take some of my old action figures that are getting worn out and cast them as pewter or lead. I plan to disassemble them to their individual parts and then cast each one and weld them back together. Could I use this silicon/naphtha technique to make silicon molds of the parts. So would the naphtha evaporate out of the entire mold and would the silicon be able to handle molten pewter or lead? I have to find an affordable mean of making molds for the pieces because to get enough 2 part silicon or resin mold material is just way too expensive. Thanks,

Hello Allen, I am new to cosplay building. I'm currently working on a wet-suit to create a predator skin. Do you think thinning out silicone and adding latex paint for the Color/Tone I want will work? or should i use a different type of paint for the color achievement? I need it to be flexible but I am not sure if adding the paint type will cause cracking or hardening.
@StiltbeastStudios

Id go latex instead of thinning silicone - you dont want Naptha up against your skin. the wet suit would provide some protection, but why risk it.

After mixing, can this be stored for a period of time without setting up? My application is nothing like what you have planned. I want to be able to thin the silicone so that I can paint it onto an electronic circuit board for water proofing the components. @pop-popfpv237

I'm sure Plasti-dip would work fine. I'm actually looking for a DIY solution to the scenario and this makes sense. I've looked at commercial products that essentially do the job, but they are expensive compared to this solution. The application I'm referring to is to coat a flight controller board for quadcopters (drones). Of course the products available are touted as being specifically for this job. A small 4 oz jar can cost upwards of $30.00. Thanks for your reply. I am going to give this a try. :) I just won't mix up so much that it will go to waste.

I like that you did this experiment, it's helpful without a doubt, however I think the end result would have been a bit more conclusive or accurate had you substituted the oil paints for acrylic. Oil paints typically use boiled linseed oil as the carrier, and oil doesn't bond well with silicone. Acrylic paints and acrylate in general will bond and cure very well. Odorless mineral spirits also work well for thinning. Thx for doing this, thumbs.

Because of the Hell hounds I am reviving for October. They never had a skin before Now these 10' long monsters will have a silicone skin. I'll have to share the process with you .
