How to thin silicone to make molds for finely detailed objects. In this video I show you how to save a lot of money, thinning silicone to pour. I use 100% silicone and Naphtha.
The measurements do not need to be exact, but:
Naptha and 100% Silicone Adhesive Caulk:
1 cup 100% Silicone Adhesive Caulk
1/8 cup Naptha

My second attempt i rubber vegetable oil on my dominoes prior to pouring the silicone and that seemed a lot better to release my dominoes. 2 questions. 1. Can i salvage my other dominoes I tried soaking in Naphtha, it didn't work. 2. Does the amount of Naphtha affect cure time,i made my consistency like glue. Thank you
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 4 жыл бұрын
Great questions. And, thank you so much for saying I am user friendly. I think that is the highest compliment a KZbin creator can receive. Now to your questions. I am not sure if they can be salvaged. Soaking them did not work, so they may be done in. The amount of Naphtha does not affect cure time. Thickness of the silicone does affect cure time. So, if you need to pour thick, use my ratio of 10 gr cornstarch to 100 gr of silicone to give a cure time of one hour, regardless of thickness. Mix it well. Vegetable oil is a good choice, and popular. A bit of caution, Naphtha, and any hydrocarbon solvent can dissolve vegetable oil, wax, any hydrocarbon. I have been using dish soap of late. It requires more work, and often several coats, but no fear of a solvent dissolving it. Check here for a segment in the video of me applying soap to a plaster mold. kzbin.info/www/bejne/amaVqmx8hpyUZq8

actually,i feel a bit shrinkage problem using paint thinner with silicon and corn starch,do you think only naptha can be used to stop shrinking?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 5 жыл бұрын
@@chillnature4397 Good question. Your shrinkage is due to the amount of solvent you are using. That volume has to go somewhere, and leave your mix. Naptha will do the same thing, as will any additive that evaporates. The only option is to use as little as possible. However, I was working with a silicone roof coating recently that is thinned already, and I did not see much shrinkage after it cured. I have not tested it yet, but you can give it a try. The corn starch should help speed curing time.

Hi, I just found this on my hardware shop's website - is this OK to use? www.bunnings.com.au/diggers-1l-shellite_p1563463 Thanks in advance! I just want to buy the correct stuff! *smile*

what about Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Is that suitable?

What is the shrinkage rate on the cured mold, since the naphta evaporates out?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable Жыл бұрын
Equal to the amount of Naptha you add.

Let me point out one problem with this method. It will *not* work with PLA printed items. I made a series of objects on a 3D printer, with PLA filament, and the naptha in the mix degraded the objects being molded. It interacted with the plastic and softened it to the point that the mold release I used did not work at all. I was unable to remove the items from the cured silicone without breaking the parts up. So, if you're using a 3D printed item, especially one printed with PLA filament, it won't work. Hope this helps.

Thanks for letting us know. Yes, Naptha will affect plastic, especially a hydrocarbon. It is a good observation that it affects PLA also. Try coating your item with a wax and use cornstarch to speed cure the thinned silicone.

@@GEOsustainable Unfortunately, the item had a significant amount of detail which would have been lost had I used wax as a release agent. My general go-to release agent is liquid Ivory dish soap mixed with talcum powder in a 70-30 ratio. In the case of having to mold small items with significant detail, I'd recommend using the homemade glycerine-gelatin molding mixtures instead of silicone.

what about when it SHRINKS ?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 4 жыл бұрын
The shrinakage can be calculated. The volume of Naptha is proportional to the amount of shrinkage. Why that occurs is that the volume of Naptha evaporates, and the silicone fills the void .

1 cup = 8 ounces. Those are 10.1 ounce tubes of caulk, so you were 6/10 of a second tube short of two cups.

Have you noticed that these molds shrink over time?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 4 жыл бұрын
yes, once a solvent evaporates, it loses volume. Physics dictates. Silicone does not shrink, it is the solvent evaporation.

What happens to the silicon tube the bags and the rubber gloves? .....landfill perhaps? Industry does not like waste....it has to supply the masses,what may seem like waste is a small persentage of the industrial process! So your system encourages people to increase landfill. Its not a solution.....what about paper? Its biodegradable and made of trees......what i wanted to see is a method of making silicon moulds that don't stick to the original ....cheers Chris

They are ground up to become filler for my larger molds, and from there, see hundreds of uses. I agree with you. The goal of my company to to replace one-use hydrocarbon plastics with bioplastics. My channel teaches you the basics and from there your own creativity will generate the solutions you ask for. Stay tuned for all the many ways one can replace hydrocarbon plastic with bioplastic. I encourage you to try your idea of using paper bags instead of ZipLock bags. Let us know how it turns out! The method I use to prevent the silicome from sticking to the mold is to coat the original with a very low melt temperature soy wax, which is covered in another of my videos. Soy wax is biodegradable.
