I came here to find out what type of grease to use on my mustache to create a good seal with my mask while snorkeling... in the ocean. Now I think I'll take up some 4-wheeling.
@anthonynorris72385 жыл бұрын
Now I understand why you would use the dielectric grease, everyone had always told me silicone, but I hated to have to pull the lid off with it on.

Everybody keep saying silicone but that is actually different from gasket maker if you use gasket maker and take out the lid gasket and put gasket maker in there let it cure for 3 days and put the gasket back in and reseal your lid never have to do it again

@preyforapophis3 жыл бұрын
Put a bead of silicone around the lid and let it dry. After it's dry put it back on! Creates a seal with no problem taking on and off and no mess.
@warzsnipez67536 ай бұрын
I’ve felt this way for a long time but after trial and error I’m telling you 100% after about two hours that dielectric grease gets hot since it’s near the motor and with the pressure of the intake sucking air that dielectric grease melts/gets sucked down in the air box from the seal and it leaks. I hate to do it but the way to actually seal the lid is gasket maker.
@ChandlerWorth6 ай бұрын
I never thought about that. We always rode more in deeper water than anything, so everything always stayed pretty cool. I could see where it would cause issues if you trail rode a lot, and the engine is getting pretty hot. Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!

Did you put your fuses and relays in a waterproof box? I’m going to get a 2021 rubicon 520 soon and am wondering about getting those wet
@ChandlerWorth3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t, I put dielectric grease around the box that goes over the fuses in the rear, and pulled all relays and fuses, and then putting dielectric grease under each one before putting them back in.
@extremefamilyman75943 жыл бұрын
Myself personally I pulled each fuse individually and put Dielectric grease where they go and plug them back in never had to seal my fuse panel to this day I still don't have problems

Any time that I separate the air box to check the filter or clean it.
@orp43373 жыл бұрын
Quick question how dose it make a water tight seal if you can remove it
@ChandlerWorth3 жыл бұрын
The water doesn’t exert enough pressure to push the grease though. The grease is just thick, and fills the gap between the lid and air box. With it being thick, it doesn’t push though and fall into the air box, or push though and let water in. It’s the same concept of greasing ballpoints or pivot points on a vehicle

What if my atv has a very small leak of oil like overtime and mine is snorkeled is good? Could water get in?
@ChandlerWorth4 жыл бұрын
Nathan Perkins it really depends on where it’s leaking from, but if it is a small leak I would say that you are fine running in water, because the water would have to have pressure to bypass a seal and force oil the other way.

Honestly tho most of these older airboxes get slightly deformed and the lids never seal even with dielectric grease. I've had 2 Honda's were the box sides are kind of sucked in and was a bitch to get the lid to seal had to 5 minute epoxy one and silicone the other I've used dielectric grease on a couple but it truly requires a perfect injection molded box and the older bikes 2 out of 5 were bad from the factory. My kawi bayou airbox got so brittle the tabs blew apart when I was opening it So i had to epoxy it as well. when that's the situation I remove the filter cut a 3" hole in the top of box and glue in a 3 inch PVC inspection port and threaded plug to be able to clean it ect. Then I run an inline mesh/foam style filter in my snorkel stack that I can service if needed.
@ChandlerWorth3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that’s crazy. I’ve had this machine since it rolled off the showroom floor. It’s never leaked a bit with using dielectric grease. The box has always been in good shape.
@buildurtruckurway91183 жыл бұрын
@@ChandlerWorth I agree that the majority of these bikes had no problems. but some were just rushed out the factory that day. not saying your way isn't right, if my air box is in good as new shape I'll 100% use dielectric grease. but if my bikes a second hand bike that people have spayed ether into the airbox to start on a crappy day or used carb or parts cleaner and got it all over the box they usually deform slightly and or dry out the plastic getting brittle causing the clips to snap off the box. I've only owned 1 new bike and its my daughter's old quad treated that bike like gold eventho it was a China fortrax 250 clone "Wilderness 250" and sold it for $100 less than I bought it for 2 years later.

I would try what Extreme Family Man is suggesting, on a side note, I'm not sure if it carburated or fuel injected. If it is carburated, Make sure the vent lines from the carburetor are run above water, and check the check valve in the over flow line on the bottom. If it's fuel injected, let me know and I'll dig deeper.
@extremefamilyman75944 жыл бұрын
@@ChandlerWorth my nephew had the same problem with his four-wheeler it was carbureted it was the Overflow on the carburetor when he would get deep enough it would pressurize and put water in the carburetor a screw in cab over flow line and it stoped

Are you saying silicone grease hardens?
@ChandlerWorth3 жыл бұрын
Not that it hardens, but that when it dries, it is stuck to whatever it has dried on, and it is then aggravating to get off cleanly.
