I arrived here after wondering if I could DIY-fix a tiny tear in my favorite faux-leather black ankle boots by using "patch" material with an adhesive (strong and flexible) -- which soon led me to ponder the possibility of sealing the boot-seams with silicone while I was at it. Does that make sense? I'm talking about creating a fine, thin layer of sealant all the way around -- from toe to heel-base -- that bonds the sole to the material (making it seem...dare I say ... seamless?). At first glance, these boots didn't seem like they'd last all that long, but but I got quite bit of mileage out of them -- 5 years -- before the damage came (it was carelessness in the last year that did it, sadly; as with relationships, even the really good ones, we all have a tendancy to care a little less than we should the longer we're in them🙂). But I love these boots enough to blather on about them to strangers while also asking for any feedback that may get me closer to acheiving my goal. I noticed that someone suggested a "spray on" ("air brush") approach to silicone that would achieve the result I'm after. Does anyone know if there's a product out there like that? I've searched but haven't found anything yet. I don't relish fighting with a caulking gun to get a thin coating of silicone. I've used guns for caulking bathtubs and they're no fun. This job requires something more delicate, where you can use your hands to mold it in place ...or something like that. Any thoughts, suggestions, etcetera, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and my apologies for the long post!

Have you tried painting, spray painting, or air-brush painting with thinned silicone? I think it could be an interesting way to make fabric or parchment paper both water tight and heat resistant.

Interesting idea. Very interesting.

@@GEOsustainable Hello -- seven months later, but wondering (if you're still here on youtube) do you know if something like you describe here -- silicone spray-on / air brush et cetera -- exists? I just posted a query above (no need to read my post --- it's rather long!! Some basic info would be great, if you have it.

Sure. That is a great idea.

Does the vulanized rubber really softens with heat ? I'm not sure.. I like your experiments, but it would be nicer if you'd cut it to share only pure information.. Days are only 24 h / day ^^ Cheer !

I do think it helps a bit as it was softer. But I was afraid to heat them much as I didn't want to ruin them. Some folks like to kick back and watch me build. But I do shorten the places where there is nothing happening. I record live, unrehearsed and like to yack. I will keep you in mind from now on. I take it you don't like my korn? I have experimented with fast forward and music, but got negative comments on that method, and I was not passing on the 'details' I share when yakking. I approach my videos from the point of a complete newbie. Cheers!

Yeah, sure it is not easy to learn and to to expose yourself in front of everyone. It is courageous ! @@GEOsustainable The problem of non information-dense videos, it that i anyway only jump to the part of the video that *seems* informative on the miniature, and so i miss some parts.. I plan on doing some tutorials too, so i'm looking aroud my favourite creators to imitate what i feel the moste clear and understandable (at least for myself..)

Good points. I may learn a lot from you. Good going. Let me know, I will most certainly watch your videos. My videos are not really information packed as they are full of useful tips, from a fella with decades of on the job experience. We as a KZbin community could sure do with more science, I look forward to your videos. And thank you so much for taking time to comment and share with me your perspectives. It can only help me get better.@@AutoNomades

You never showed the closeup of the rubber boots after the repair and after they cured. Frustrating!
