@@GEOsustainable then we are two here! Also I my Chemist training remembers it right, this kind of silicone reacts with moisture in the air and poly-condensates releasing acetic acid. So All the cornstarch does is adding more moisture(trap on the starch/moisture content), so it can set faster then what is possible with air alone. Thats also why some Thinners never fully cure in thicker casts without the starch, as some are hydrophobic and nearly none of the Ambient moisture will penetrate deeply with them, isn't it?

I desperately need to make a medical device for my son that is food grade silicone. Is food grade silicone different than ones found in Home Depot that state it is safe for use as a countertop sealer near food?? Or is there a specific food grade silicone that you use?
@GEOsustainable4 жыл бұрын
Food Grade silicone is one that has not fillers. If you have a concern, then use that. I consider 100% silicone to be food safe and medical grade, once it has cured. If the silicone is rated for countertop, it is food safe. This formula will work, however, make sure you let it cure well, for days, so the Acetic acid completely evolves out. Acetic acid can irritate.

Do you know what the starch does to cause it to cure faster? Also I haven't seen any mention of the silicone color being a factor, but most colored ones would be full of titanium dioxide already. Have you observed any affects, like needing to reduce the starch added because there is less actual silicone?

Silicone caulk are single part tin-cure silicones. It's chemical reaction that causes it to set up is triggered by exposure to moisture such as air humidity. Cornstarch contains trace levels of moisture. And when mixed thoroughly with the silicone, you're effectively placing moisture all throughout the silicone. So rather than the silicone curing as normal from exposed top layer down, it's curing throughout.

I love the idea of silicone oil replacing the naphtha, but silicone oil is quite expensive on amazon. I want to make larger molds so would need a good deal of silicone oil. Any suggestions where to find silicone oil in large quantum’s that is more affordable? Thanks as always love your videos!
@GEOsustainable4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we know. Silicone oil is super expensive as it is also used in medicine, body augmentation surgery and eye surgery. Did you check out the next video? I used Glycerine, it may work for you. However, Glycerine has to weep out after thinning. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqeoZauvm5ung68

Thank you sir for replying! I was up watching your videos until 3am, but had not yet seen the glycerin one yet. I watched it yesterday (at 1am as i take care of my dad and nights are my only free time) and was intrigued. I saw in one of the other questions you said glycerin molds would be ok for resin which is what I am looking to do. I am going to give it a try. Since i use a small torch to get the bubbles out of the resin, i am super cautious about flammability and also fumes especially for my dad. Thanks again!

Do you have an estimated drying time without adding the cornstarch? Does the silicone oil change the durability or flexibility of the finished product?

Great questions. The dry time without cornstarch would be the same as silicone caulk, about 30 minutes to form a skin and 24 hours to fully cure. The silicone oil doesn't change the durability or flexibility of silicone caulk.

This option may be perfect for me. I am usually needing to cast resin duplicates of styrene parts...either missing or repaired. The other thinners will attack the plastic. But I NEED the thinned down version, like liquid silicones. However, will this method cause any shrinkage of the mold? I usually need close to exact size duplicate parts. Using various solvents is a way to reduce and enlarge molds. Love your posts! 👍
@GEOsustainable2 жыл бұрын
So glad you found this video, it is perfect for your needs. Will it shrink? Yep, it evaporates and shrinks to the exact amount of thinner you add. Folks that have this issue, I suggest that you not thin it, as silicone from the tube does not shrink. Another option is to leave it in mould until it has shrunk all it is going to in thickness.
