Satins have actual real feathers. Silkie feathers are just down not real feathers AT ALL. I don't understand why people want a bird without it's feathers. I might actually be forced to actually buy one of these poor creatures because I need a satin but the only one was already sold. So now I am forced to probably get a bird without real feathers before I can fix it with a polish. Another thing that absolutely BLOWS my mind as if forcing a poor bird to do without real feathers wasn't bad enough you guys go and make ones that have absolutely naked necks. Showgirls need to stop. Get rid of silkie feathers breed more intelligence in and then you have a cool bird.

@@MojoHomesteadFL i have two because I could not find Satins. and yes Wicket and Gizmo are sweet and cute and have good breeding to them, but they cannot fly and their protein and husbandry requirements especially for Gizmo who tends to try to stuff herself to death unless you get her diet exactly right would both be much better off with real feathers, However I will be fixing this in a couple generations for them because I have show polish eggs and show sultan eggs in the incubator right now and 7 of them are developing nicely so far.

@@songoftheblackunicorn666 listen - really, I feel you. Silkies are much more prone to a variety of ailments also including predator attacks (likely because their poof blocks their line of site) and parasite issues (likely because they are less inclined for normal preening practices) but - I’ve been working with my lines, which to be fair is more of a project/fun pen with mixed colors and feather types, for about 6 years now and in that time I’ve absolutely been able to breed towards health and vigor with them. It’s also helpful for me that I’m in FL, because i know colder climates *may* be tougher on them also because of their feathering.

@@MojoHomesteadFL I lived in Jacksonville FL for 39 years, and Georgia for almost 4. I am now in the land of my ancestors in upstate NY. In upstate NY plastic does not melt in the shade and the humidity is not horrible. I bring everyone inside when it is too cold wet and windy . I've had a severely Cross beaked Americana hen for almost 4 years in the south Georgia area and I have had polish and sultans in Florida and Georgia. Gizmo and Wicket came from a private family farm that sells pullets, chicks and hatching eggs in small quantities west of here where it gets just as cold so they are used to reasonably cold conditions. The heat was so bad on my Americana last April may and June in Georgia that she stopped laying altogether for the rest of the year and she is reliable again as of January up here. My sultan had to be given ice water constantly and cooled down with a wet wash cloth. My three polish were having issues before I left too and the one with microcephaly ended up having seizures and died before we got up here. So Florida/ Georgia + cackle hatchery birds equals death. I find it much easier here personally. I really appreciate what you Florida breeders are doing with crested birds, however I do not envy you guys dealing with that heat and humidity. Up here you just keep everyone out of the cold and wet and wind and they do quite well and the bugs are not an issue. It is truly amazing how it is up here.

@@MojoHomesteadFL as for predators I feel you. I like show quality birds, however so far I want show quality esa birds for myself and other people and Izzy taught Gizmo and Wicket deep pressure. So I want to get things to a point where parrots go back to the wild where they belong and we replace them with appropriate esa chickens. So what I do is I very carefully leave as much crest as possible while sculpting out the eyes. I learned grooming on a bichon Frise dog when I was ten so it is something that you can do the crested version on crested chickens and it is very cute as well as functional if you do it right. And then they are still sitting ducks when it comes to foxes, fishers, coyote, etc,...... So being able to see still doesn't make them able to fly or protect themselves, so I am very careful when I allow Wicket and Gizmo to play outside. They are just too precious
