Silky Gomboy 240 Cuts Well But Corona Saws Are Much Better

The Silky Gomboy 240 cuts well, but compared to a Corona Razor tooth saw is terrible:
1) Too pricey.
2) Spine doesn’t stay sharp.
3) Flimsy.
4) The handle to blade buckles.
5) Does not start or stay in a kerf well.
6) Straight blade doesn't "pull in" branches like curved blades.
7) Can’t find the black and chrome saw in the shadows.

I’m glad you made this video. My loss of interest for the Silky was the price of a replacement blade. I also think the Silky saws are overpriced and I really dislike overpriced.

You know, I just reviewed the 2 videos that I made about the Corona and Gomboy. I inadvertently made the Gomboy look better than the Corona. The necessary edits and making the best of a bad situation/saw made it seem better. It's hard to demonstrate what something "isn't".

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl I watched the Corona video and I agree. The videos kind of made it look like the Silky cut better. And cutting is the meat and potatoes of the saw. But it’s obvious that you prefer the Corona overall. I am going to look for a Corona 8” and give it a try.

I've got to find my new sharp Corona and settle it for myself which is the better cutter. Here's a cutting test I did when they were new. They cut at about the same speed if the White Oak was of consistent hardness. Start at about 1 minute. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpfLeaCDYrxpfas

There is a right way to use them. If they buckle and snap, you're in too much of a hurry and aren't doing it right. Best you buy something else.

The Silky gomboy comes with an orange handle as well as black. Also, it’s available with a curved blade. I’ve used a silky for years now as a professional landscaper (not the gomboy) and it is vastly superior to the Coronas I had before that. Many of them the handle broke or they went dull quickly. I used to be able to buy Japanese folding saws with wooden handles at me local hardware store for about eight bucks. They came in fine tooth as well as coarse s well as various different lengths. They are the perfect companion for bushcraft unless you need to Buck larger logs. I still have at least a dozen of them in various places. One is in my backpack. They don’t cost eight bucks anymore, they’re $32 on Amazon. I also carry a much larger silky for bucking larger firewood when I need it. I no longer have anything in my landscaping tools made by Corona except a pair of flower snips. I do have a pair of secateurs with the Corona name on them, but only because Corona marketed felco’s in California fit a time and I found them abandoned on a job site. Most of the rest of my tools are Bahco. Half the price, just as good as the competition. Bonus: most quality folding saws throw a good spark on flint, chert or agate, and they’re easier to use than a traditional steel, though I like those, too.

I’ve started noticing after all these years of Corona use that they may be dulling more quickly than they ought to. I’m ver close to buying a curved bright colored Silky to see how long the edge lasts among other key uses. TY!

Hi David, I can see where your coming from with the silky saws. Can you please give them a second chance with their outback gomboy. The outback gomboy’s blade has a curve to them, has a overall thicker blade and a sharper spine. Their outback series is design for the bush crafters like yourself.

David, you're a fire magician, as always. My personal saw is the Corona and i think it's great, but we use KatanaBoy and GomBoy on small logs or intricate cuts, along with 4'-8' crosscut saws in our trail clearing work. The silky saws are fine, but too pricey for a minimal difference in cutting and ease of damage for my personal use.

Silky is a pull saw. I have 2 of them and I am used to the pull action. The handle color indicates tooth size and there are small medium and large sizes with differient handles. Longer versions are curved . You have much more cutting power on a pull stroke. I use silky for arbor work a no one in the business uses Corona saws...

I have a Gomboy and had great difficulty cutting through the trunk of a dead cedar full of fatwood. The resin liquified as I cut and the blade just kind of glided instead of cut. The teeth filled with goo. I wound up getting a folding bow saw with a much more aggressive blade. I think I may give my son the Gomboy and take back the old Corona.

Dave, I think you might find that Silky has saws that compare more equally to the Corona. They come in bright colors and are available with curved blades, that admittedly do perform some tasks better than a straight blade. You get rid of those objections and you're only left with the price. That price might be justified to others by things that you aren't testing, like lifetime of the blades, features like locking mechanism, blade interchangeability and how many positions the blade can be used in. Those sort of details. I have 3 Silkys in different lengths and styles and can scrape fatwood and strike a ferro rod with all of them. You must have gotten a bad one or Putin invading the Ukraine caused it like all our other troubles as consumers these days.😛

Thank you for such a well thought out and information packed comment. In the Description I mentioned how the saw buckles from time to time at the handle to blade connection. I realize that's not going to happen when applying force properly, but as you saw in the video, I was cutting branches from all kinds of odd positions. Corona saws don't feel flimsy. They haven't buckled on me in 10 years nor bound up in the kerf as frequently as the Gomboy. I think that same poor handle to blade design is causing both problems.
@sip_water

corona blades last just as long as silky having used both for 10+ years and the entire saw is cheaper than a silky replacement blade. also just so you guys know flat saws are meant to cut at chest level and curved saws are designed to cut up above or down at your feet. both styles can do either but will excel in these places.

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl I haven't ever tried a Corona, so I think I'll check one out on the strength of your conviction in it. Just to satisfy my own curiosity, I have bought about 7 different "pocket" folding saws on Amazon to compare them with the Silky Pocketboy and none have performed well enough to sway me, in spite of their lower price. One exception might be the Coghlan's Pocket Sierra Saw. It feels cheap as hell, but its 4" blade is very sharp and reminds me of the Japanese flexible flush cut saws that woodworkers use to cut dowels off when they are glued into boards to hide screws. It's very light, again, sort of owing to its cheap plastic design, and is perfect for a compact bugout bag. I bought half a dozen of them back when they were around $4.50 a piece, but I just checked and they are closer to $12.00 now so I must admit that I'd never pay that for one. At the old price I feel about them the way you feel about your Stanley knife.

Been using corona saws for over 20+ years. Still have and use the first one i got. Bought a new one last year as a backup or just an extra. The qualty has gone down a little since then, but cant really name any product out there that hasnt. Not enough to care for the price point compared to others. Almost got a silky till i went to buy one in the store and gave it a feel. It was a quick no for me. The blade is to flimsy for me and when the sap is thick and sticky in the wood, it will bind like crazy and can cause injury. I preffer a thicker firmer blade that is safer to use.
