Hey Avantman! Thank you for pointing this out. You're indeed 100% correct. As you can see, I'm not used to working with sawbucks. I did, however, buy a new one (in metal, this time around) some months ago. The new one has a different design, with no top center piece running through the entire construction, but the principle is ofc still the same as with the one shown in the video. Once again, thank you for the heads up!

A very nicely done, comprehensive review of those well made saws. Thanks, Fredrik. BTW, when using a saw buck to saw on, normally you saw off one end or the other. That allows the kerf, as the saw cuts, to open rather than close (which was binding your blade as you got toward the finish). BTW, it's not a "saw horse", (as some comments mentioned) they have a horizontal top to use when doing construction. You were using a "saw buck" made to hold a log when sawing.
@PinkG102 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Rick! A saw buck actually sounds a lot more like the Swedish word for it, which is "sågbock" (såg = saw, bock = buck). I initially wanted to use the saw buck the way you described it, at least on the larger pieces of wood, but due to some ... issues, I had to go with it like this instead, despite feeling it was an improper way to do it (taking unnecessary risk of potentially breaking the blade).

@@SilverPony44 - I really like the Gomboy, performance contra size. It really is the best of both worlds. If I could own only one, it would be the Gomboy. The three different models do complete each other well though, depending on what you'll use them for, and how you'll carry them etc. But if I were you, I'd stick with the Gomboy. 100%. BUT if the carrying size/portability doesn't matter to you, i.e if you're not going to bring it with you while hiking, camping etc., then by all means go with the Bigboy. It's the saw that will get the job done the fastest/most effortless.

@@PinkG10 while i dont feel the need to be a jerk about it, i do feel the need to offer you some advice on cutting wood under tension vs wood under compression: when cutting wood BETWEEN two supporting points, the top side is what is known as the compression side, and the bottom is known as the tension side…because of the effect gravity will have as you cut the wood in half. when cutting into wood under compression, as your cut gets deep enough, gravity will pull the wood down between supporting points and so your cut closes and pinches your blade. if instead you would cut the unsupported end of the wood hanging off the horse, the top side would be under tension and the bottom would be the compression side. when you cut into tension wood, as your cut gets deep enough, gravity pulls the unsupported end down, the cut opens up and does not pinch your saw blade. when you were cutting the smaller branch on the stump, you were cutting off the unsupported end. and so the top side was the tension side, the cut opened up, and your saw didn’t get pinched. see the difference? you always want to cut into the tension side. cutting into the compression side will always pinch your saw blade.

As I stated several times in the video, I feel almost ashamed being so late to the folding saw party, especially since it's such a vital part of any outdoor setup of tools. I, too, (will) carry the Pocketboy in my pocket, the Gomboy in my backpack and the Bigboy in my car. I think I'll get the Katanaboy just because it's kind of "cool" (in lack of better wording), and I might also look into some of Silky's fixed saws (looking to become an arborist in the future perhaps). Oh, and I had a blast making this video. Using these saws are (surprisingly) fun! Take care of yourself, and I'll see you around!

The sheaths (or plastic containers) are useful for when you want to throw these tools into a pack, though the collapsible belt loop is useful as well. They prevent the saw from opening and snagging/cutting other objects inside your pack. The BigBoy gets a different pouch because you aren't likely to stow it away inside a pack, but rather attach it to the outside using cordage or carabiner.

It's amazing how well these Silky saws performed even when the user was trying to squash the blade every time 😂
@6Knightmare9 Жыл бұрын
Regarding the question you asked in the beginning. Silky has different sawblade types for fresh or dry wood. The blades with smaller teeth are meant for dry/dead wood. The blades with larger teeth meant for green wood. The medium teeth meant for in between. This is very simplified, many more nuances about the size of the piece of wood being cut also, and maybe more than that as well.

@PinkG102 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Tao! So, "saw horse" it is! You learn something new every day. I'm actually going to buy a new saw horse, in metal, with better "grip" (sort of like aggressive jimping) to keep the wood piece in a more firm grip. In this video, I could have used some tension bands to secure it better. I think the Pocketboy did a great job, especially considering its size and limited blade length. I don't own the Bacho Laplander, so I can't compare the two.
@PinkG102 жыл бұрын
@@GHOST... - I'm tempted to try the Bacho Laplander out, but I do feel that the Pocketboy is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in a folding saw in this size range. @@PinkG10 You are welcome! Happy to share that with you. I'm a general contractor and an experienced carpenter. I use saw horses often. My advise when cutting is to make your cut outside the saw horses rather than in between the two. This will allow the weight of the log to drop while cutting and prevent the blade from becoming pinched while cutting. I really enjoy your content! You communicate very well in English and you are very informative. I appreciate your perspective and demonstrations.

Hello, I’ve liked this video and subscribed to your channel...found you because of your Bravo 3 video. There aren’t many out there, and yours is one of the best. I love my Bravo 3. More to the point...I own MANY Silky saws, both folders and fixed, including the entire Outback line. If you’re considering a Katanaboy, please take a look at the Silky 500mm Temagari Gaki. It is a fixed blade, one handed saw, but I find that it crushes my Katanaboy 500 in performance. Once you get to the 650, the Katanaboy may hold a slight edge in terms of time to process large logs, but it is far more unwieldy, and takes quite a bit of practice to master its use. The Temagari is my go to when I want something larger than the Bigboy, and it easily outperforms the Bigboy by every metric. Now, it is a large saw, and I wouldn’t recommend it for an overnight camping trip, but if you’re going to stay for a few days or weeks, it is a wood processing machine. Unlike the Outback line, the Temagari is sharpenable. Silly makes a special file for their shapenable saws, and it works very well. Also, Silly makes the Nata hatchet, which is one of the best delimbing, splitting, and batoning tools that I’ve ever used. I highly recommend trying one. Go for the double edged 240mm. It’s my favorite. Lastly, if you want to try a bow saw, I recommend the collapsible Agawa Canyon Boreal 21 or 24. They are excellent, and pack down to a very manageable size. There are multiple blade options on their site, but they can also be used with standard blades that you find at any hardware store. They will change what you think about bow saws - I promise.

Hi! I'm sorry for my late reply to your VERY comprehensive, insightful and helpful comment! I've been out kayaking quite a bit recently, and haven't spent much time in front of the computer at all. I'm glad that you found my Bravo III-video enjoyable, and I'm also glad to hear that you subscribed to my channel! It's a small channel, for sure, but I do my best to show interesting and sometimes even unique, knives and axes in great detail/use. This is my first ever video showing saws, which are not in any way unique though, but I did have a lot of fun trying them out. I seriously can't believe I waited so many years adding such great, useful tools to my outdoor lineup. Thank you for recommending the Silky Genki Temagari 500mm. I had not even heard about it before you mentioned it. I did know about many fixed blade saws from Silky, but not that one. I looked it up and it sure looks like a monster! Sure, not the most practical saw for a small hike, but if I ever intend to build a medium-large shelter during the winter, I could def. see myself using a tool like that. Btw. I thought that the Outback-saws could be sharpened? What's preventing me from doing some sharpening of those blades/teeth? I do have spare blades for all of them, but that was more in case of me breaking a blade by accident. I've been thinking of picking up the Nata hactchet, but I wasn't 100% sure what to think about the steel Silky decided to use for them. Hearing your thoughts, however, convinced me to pick one up. I haven't ordered it yet, but I'll do that shortly and I'll ofc also make a video showing it (in actual use ofc). I'm familiar with both the bow saws you mention/recommend, although I've not actually tried them myself. Yet. I guess I should put them on the list with the Nata! Once again, thank you for taking the time to write such a great and informative comment!
