I saw Silky race at Santa Anita. He was unbelievable! Watching him come from behind was just thrilling! My brother in law worked at the track & we were there visiting him that day. I got to meet the great Willie Shoemaker that day also. I was only 8 yrs. old at the time

What I loved most of all was the California race crowds true love and respect for him. Even when he was years away from the races. I've heard the Silky Sullivan expressions to illustrate a top closing effort. The way he closed in that race was to say in the least, incredible. Some would say he just caught tired horses, well to be that far back at that stage of the race,he did way,way more than catch tired horses,he literally exploded. Not many can do that, what a nice horse!

The interesting thing about his "come from behind" win is that his stride is almost leisurely. He certainly doesn't look like he's busting a gut. It's hard to not wonder what might've been if he'd been handled differently. Very intelligent horses require a very different approach from "regular" horses. And very big horses require something different too. Fun to speculate.

What a gorgeous animal!!! A vision to watch prancing around and the Santa Anita run was amazing!

Thx for the video. Silky was a beautiful horse. His jockey said when Silky decided to fire up you had better be ready or he'd leave you in the dirt. He ran some amazingly fast splits charging for the finish line. In one close race two jockeys were debating who finished first. One jockey told the other he thought he had won, But the other jockey said neither of them had won. It was that sucker who passed them on the outside (Silky) who had won.

This is great! Thanks for posting. I've heard stories from people who watched him race and they said it was truly amazing! He sure was feisty going into the paddock and the track!! LOL

The guy in the red polo shirt that you see exercising silky several times is my father Pete Kozar.

Thanks for posting, that was an amazing run he put in. Though I can't understand why the heck the trainer had him breezed the day of the Derby. Crazy.

You can visit the National Studs here in France, there are many, and it's exciting to see some of the young champions as well as the oldtimers who've never lost the spark. When love is in the air ...

A filly named Donnaguska recently finished second with a Silky Sullivan-like move toward the end. Races like that are so thrilling!

Yeah, i think i remember something about a "big red" horse in the early seventies that needed a special saddle. :-)

Racehorses back then were built strong and big. Nowadays, they're built so frail. :C

Wow! Put a bigger white splash on his face and he looks an awful lot like California Chrome. Zenyatta is the only other horse I can think of that can be up to 18 lengths back and win.

Another proof that the jockey can put all efforts as he wants, the spirit and character of the horse is needed too. Damn, I love horseracing... but I would love it even more if they would ban the whips from the track. It would force all the horse owners to train their horses before they send them on the track, and of course the health of it. I don't know how horseracing is in the US, but over here in Germany...the track is great, but it has a reason why the visitors ain't allowed to the stables.

Like Secretariat or Sulky, some thoroughbreds are "touched" by God on one instance, thus achieve the impossible and forever scar the face of history with their footprints.

well that was amazing. too bad he didn't run when he was older. I suspect he might have been a bit of a "seabiscuit".

41 lengths behind in a 6 furlong race are you serious...I bet that hasnt happend before or will never happen again...That is just incredible...It seems like i could have won with a 41 length lead in 6 furlongs

I don't think there will be another Triple Crown winner, too much emphasis on speed and where do all the Derby winners go, but overseas these days. I love Silky though, amazing race!

Racing is a dying sport in US. The demographics condemn it. Young people aren't interested. It's too slow for today. Has Germany always had horseracing? The cruelty to the animals is a problem, but far worse with dog racing. The government taxing authorities have bleed racing dry. The industries needs new blood, but all they get are 'promoters' no better than the government. Racing like boxing has seen it's better days in America,
