Hey sillintor have you thought about trying the costume nuzlocke. If you don't know it is where you play each costume and see how many wins you can get when you lose with a costume you switch until you run out of costumes.

For some reason, I'll jump and d-air without any other input and seph just falls off ledge. Does he move forward when he does that?

not necessarily I think, I would say it's more to do with the momentum of your jump before the down-air input. To avoid falling off the edge, either roll to ledge, or press shield at ledge first before you input jump into down air.
