Thank you and well done. I remember going to Silloth on the steam train from Carlisle and staying in all sort of wonderful holiday places, some more like a garden shed but to us kids a palace and even a really posh holiday when we stayed in an old railway carriage that had somehow been transported to a site. And don't forget the motor cycle racing on the aerodrome before it became the holiday camp, and putting baited lines out at night and seeking a catch for breakfast in the morning, and the kites we made and ... wonderful memories thanks, Peter Nicholson

Thanks for this wonderful video, John. My great grandfather John Gardner was Chief Engineer of the SS Yarrow. He retired on 21st February 1919 and was presented with a mounted silver ship's bell by the officers and crew. It's proudly displayed on my mantlepiece. His daughter was Isabella Johnstone and lived at 12 Eden Street. William Johnstone, my grandfather was Chief Engineer of the SS Wantung sailing from Shanghai to Chunking on the Yangtse river. He was killed during the Wanhsien incident. My mother Anne was at school with Dorothy Williams (Latrigg Street) and Johnnie Gray of donkeys fame. I have wonderful memories of Silloth and greatly appreciate the work you've done on this history.

Thank you Sir I was brung up in Silloth (35 Caldew street) before I left for military career! Father could live in Liverpool when he left the Navy and we would have the life that offered or he could move to my mums part of the world and we could live a great growing up child life - no offence to Liverpool in any way. But he would find it hard to find employment in Silloth and surrounding areas. What a guy - thank you father. What a lovely place to live and grow up and the people are amazing and warm - thank to each and everyone of those people.

Well done John, know how much time and effort goes in to jobs like these. There used to be an old picture that was on the wall in the Golf Hotel (originally Solway Hotel... I was paying attention!!!) An it showed a proposed town plan where the layout featured a grand crescent facade, apparently the story behind it was that we were awfully close to being called Silloth Regis but lost out to Bognor? Love to know if there was any truth in that. Anyway, great effort, well done.

Maybe the picture had been put into the office or possibly moved elsewhere as do not recall viewing same and we used to go to the Golf Hotel regularly up until about 8-10 years ago. The then owners had sold up and moved across the road to live above the chip shop there, think their daughter owned the shop or at least worked there. We found Silloth by pure luck having been up there to view a caravan that was for sale. We had never heard of the place and the caravan was on one of the country parks about miles from Silloth. Boy when we started to get to know the area it was just brilliant, quaint but everything you needed and most of the folk so very down to earth, we made, and still have Silloth friends. Thank you for this video of great memories for us!!

Still find it interexting that the North Eastern and later LNER operated the railway line rather than the LMS

Wonder if Carlisle and other money could have created a proper inland port/railway? Today probably impossible without tax free zone. Over to you Cumbria Enterprise [oh is it now defunct?]

If you watch this it has a map from 1860 - The Mill isn't on it.

@@charliegeorge9393 I remember a classmate (about 1964 -just before e did the 11+) had a photograph of his grandfather and gang that built the dock gates. Not sure they were the original gates but certainly 'history' to us in those days.
