I used to live just up the road in the 1980's. A lot of the lads on our estate were Millwall and good lads. Though we were Scousers we never had any issues with anyone, were always accepted and a number of us played for the local football team during that period. We had a great side at that level and reached the South London Sunday League Cup Final in about 1988..we lost 2-1 but we'd gone right through the leagues with promotions in every season. It's a shame working class people wherever they are from can't always get on...We need more unity not division.

They all get on well when they all move out to Australia, as people learn to put that BS aside and focus on having a good time, with the focus being things they have in common, rather than the things that divide. I grew up playing football with guys from just about every major city in the UK and they were all great characters. Lots of jokes before training and afterwards in the bar. The town and the team was everybody''s new family. We'd all spend many hours chatting about the prospects of our respective clubs back in the UK and everyone would have a lot of great stories from back home, like my mate from Leeds who hired a mini bus to watch an away game at Millwall in the 80's. It had been turned over when they finally got to it, after security wouldn't let them leave the stadium for an hour to protect their safety. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect this experience would be like, given my main recollection of the club is from stories and movies from these times when there was trouble on the terraces. I was actually impressed with the stadium and know the club has produced some decent players like Teddy Sheringham and Tim Cahill over the years. Best of luck in chasing promotion - never thought I'd see Millwall possibly in the EPL!

I used to by a matchday steward at two English league clubs and never cease to laugh at the signs about foul and abusive language being prohibited, which is a bit like saying to the wind that it shouldn't blow. Really glad to see you enjoyed your visit to one of English football's more... characterful clubs, though, and felt at home. That comes as something of a relief. I used to play five a side at the New Den years ago and that was quite an experience.

Notorious for that but the name has changed slowly in the last 10-15 years . . . . so you are lucky ! Though, you are also lucky to have not bought a ticket in the 'Dockers End' as it is nicknamed I think, where the hardcore Millwall fans go and they do not take kindly to tourists in their end, or anyone obviously an outsider or taking photos. . . @@stelbotadventures They've all interesting history . . .many clubs now are the result of amalgamations between other clubs, maybe 100 years ago . . .and they mostly played all kinds of sports or activities and where social clubs. Norwich is the regional local team where I grew up . . .I guess Millwall and Norwich are two clubs that have not sold their soul totally to commercialisation. Norwich known as a family club, there was an outcry when they made the error of using a betting firm as a sponsor and had to change it back due protest.
@ramadamming8498
@ramadamming8498 Жыл бұрын
@@stelbotadventures Indeed, well and Scottish of course . . or Welsh . . . or even Irish . . .well, in Ireland they also play their own 'Gaelic Football' or Irish Rules Football ( which looks a bit like Rugby ) as well as 'Football' football. Before the FA was founded in the 1860s that standardised football, there were many regional versions that were sometimes a mi of football and rugby. It was like that in Norfolk, or the east in general, where they played a version, hence the first 'Association Football' rules football clubs where not founded there until the 1880s, as they played their own style locally. So the founding dates are just based on clubs using FA standard rules. Though there were clubs before, often combining all sorts and activities. Many clubs dropped the other sports over time, or they became totally separate clubs - but you still see it in the names. Eg: AFC is still common ( Athletic & Football Club ) Fun fact: AC Milan was founded by English immigrants to Italy - even clubs in South America were founded this way.
@ramadamming8498
@ramadamming8498 Жыл бұрын
@@stelbotadventures Another 'fun fact' for you: the famous 'Arsenal' are named as such, as they were founded by the gun battalion of an army barracks in north London. Tottenham was founded by the Jewish community in North London. There's similar stories for every club, founded by local community workers, or families and so forth. It is a shame many think, that the commercialisation of the last 15 - 20 years, has radically altered some of that connection, with stadium corporate sponsorship and billionaire levels of money that detatch from the fans - that is why lower league even non league, is getting more popular again. So, choosing a Millwall over a Chelsea, is definitely more rooted

Top marks for visiting a proper club and not playing in some generic, gentrified and sanitised bowl.

Really can't stand that club, all they wanna do is fight, they don't care if you're a man, woman or child they will batter the snot out of you if you don't support them even if you haven't done or said anything out of turn, you could be an innocent person just going to support your team but if you're an away fan at The Den you're taking your life into your own hands. If you're a Millwall fan and you miss a couple of games because of a bereavement for example, your own fellow fans will laugh, take the p!$$ and beat the hell out of you for missing a couple of games and being "disloyal"
