Brings me to tears every time I listen to this song. Having lost my dear daughter 20 months ago, I know the feeling of intense loss. I do hope there is such a place as the Land O' the Leal for her and Andy and Johnny"s sake. May they all rest in peace. Such a wonderful band was Silly Wizard. I have their recordings to remember them by. Thanks for sharing.

I JUST LISTENED FOR THE FIRST TIME TO ANDY M. STEWART SING, "THE LAND O' THE LEAL...AND I CRIED WHILST ANDY SANG AND WHEN JOHN PLAYED BEAUTIFULLY THE FIDDLE. AS I STUDIED ANDY AS HE WAS SINGING, I COULD ACTUALLY FEEL HIS HEART IN HIS WORDS. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING...THIS WORLD NEEDS MORE OF WHAT ANDY MODELED SO WELL, IN HIS REALNESS, HIS WARMTH, HIS HUMOR/QUICK WIT, HIS SIMPLISTICALLY PROFOUND UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT REALLY MATTERS IN LIFE, AND OF COURSE HIS HEART WAS HEARD IN EVERY WORD HE SANG SO BEAUTIFULLY! I LOVE THE UNIQUENESS OF THE TONE AND QUALITY OF HIS VOICE. HIS TONE RESONATED FROM HIS GENTLE HEART. IT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHY SOMEONE SO AMAZINGLY GIFTED AND TALENTED, AND OF COURSE HIGHLY REGARDED FOR ALL OF HIS LOVELY CHARACTER TRAITS WAS TAKEN SO YOUNG. SADLY, I NEVER MET ANDY, BUT I BELIEVE WE WILL MEET IN THE LAND O' THE LEAL. I CAN PICTURE ANDY SINGING TO JESUS AND TO MY GRAND BABY GIRL IN HEAVEN AND TO ALL MY LOVED ONES AND EVERYONE. HIS VOICE WILL BE HEARD IN HEAVEN THROUGH ETERNITY! ALTHOUGH I AM AN AMERICAN (BORN AND RAISED)...MY MOTHER WAS A GORDON, SO I HAVE SOME SCOTTISH BLOOD IN ME FOR SURE! MARINE, SGT T.R. GORDON, WHO WAS STATIONED IN SCOTLAND MANY YEARS AGO, HAS ADOPTED SCOTLAND AS HIS TRUE "HOMELAND."...HE AUTHORED AND PUBLISHED A BRILLIANT BOOK~~"A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY THROUGH SCOTLAND" BY T.R. GORDON...CHECK IT OUT! TIM, (MARINE) SENT ME THIS VIDEO OF ANDY AND I WILL FOREVER LOVE THIS SONG AND AGREE WITH SGT T.R. GORDON OF THE USMC, IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL~~THANK YOU TIM, AND THANK YOU, DEAR ANDY, FOR SHARING YOUR VOICE, YOUR HEART, YOURSELF, WITH THE WORLD! GOD BE WITH ANDY'S FAMILY.~~BEV~~USA, VIRGINIA BLESSINGS~~

This has been a favorite song of mine since 1963 when I heard it on Alex Campbell's LP he Best Loved Songs of Bonnie Scotland. I sang it at my kid brother's memorial service, along with Taps. It's said that Lady Nairne wrote this for a berieved friend , and I'm sure it's so. A dirge that still manages to celebrate life.

Jan borrowing Dan's account here. I was at the Atlanta concert where this was filmed, possibly the best concert I've been to in my entire life. I saw Silly Wizard twice in Atlanta, and Andy Stewart with Manus Lunny and Sileas once, and Relativity twice. The Celtic music scene in Atlanta in the 80s and 90s was incredible if you looked for it. We also had Theatre Gael dedicated to performing plays by Scots, Irish, and Welsh playwrights. This song, combining Johnny's sweet sweet fiddle with Andy's heartfelt singing brings tears every time. It even inspired me to include the promise to be "leal" in our wedding vows, because to me Andy's explanation deepens the meaning beyond loyal/faithful to something that's just good and trustworthy through and through, which is how I feel about our marriage. Silly Wizard and Relativity were leal bands. God bless Johnny, Andy, Michael, and those who still miss them.

So I've come here because this song is mentioned in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. The special quality of Silly Wizard to no doubt especially due to Andy M. Stewart and as well of course the beautiful instrumental backup and interplay. The banter on stage that we hear here is of course very entertaining as well. A sad song, but beautifully performed by a great singer with a great backup. The commentary was great too, it is like being at a live performance at a coffee house or small venue where the performer can communicate with the audience. I almost feel as though I were there, which sadly I was not. Reminds me of the few times I got to see my favorite performers live. I wondered what a leal was, I imagined a flock of leals grazing on the Scottish highlands, but now I know what the word means. Or perhaps flocks of leals flying overhead, filling the air with their beautiful, poetic calls. But now I know. The advantage of youtube posts, they do not have to be limited by the space on a CD.

Nonsense. I learned this tune, Land o' the Leal, from Donald MacLeod, son of Angus MacLeod, piper to the Queen (Victoria), when I was a boy. It is one of the most heart rending laments when you hear it played by a sensitive lone piper, awe inspiring when played by full pipes and drums. Often played at Armistice.

I agree. I found this old quote that says exactly what you did, essentially, but it's old, dated 1896, from "The Scottish Review," Vol. 27, Pg. 115: ""The old tune 'Hey, tuttie tattie,' which is believed to have been used as a battle-song by Robert the Bruce, is the same tune which now-a-days, when given with vigour and spirit, is called 'Scots, wha ha'e wi' Wallace bled,' or when slow and pathetic 'The Land o' the Leal.' . . . You can buy it on ITunes and Amazon for $.99 for the mp3. Search for "Andy M. Stewart" and "Man in the Moon" - "Land O' The Leal" is the last song on the CD. Just in case you don't know, Andy was the singer for Silly Wizard, seen in this clip, and "Man in the Moon" is one of his excellent solo albums. The CD version is very beautiful, but it lacks the specific violin solo that Johnny plays in this clip - but I love Andy's solo version too.
@fenwayify4 жыл бұрын
The banter between Andy and Johnny actually serves as a light- hearted counterpoint for what is to come: a song of loss. Ah but Johnny's violin elevates it to an even more tender chord. Here is the better version. It is a masterpiece.
