@@goofy79248 Andy was one of the best ballad singers i have heard. Silly Wizard were very good, always liked, Wi my dog and gun, and The Banks of the Bann, it's a different Banks of the Bann, to the one he is singing. It's a slower song. Andy and Johnny R.I.P. 👍

You don't know how precious this is to me. I've loved Silly Wizard forever, but alas I'm too "young" :-) to have seen them live. This is pretty much the first time I see a video recording of them. If you have anymore to share, pretty please, put them up. I, and everyone in my situation, will be eternally grateful. :-) Here is to the best Celtic band ever...

I LOVE listening to the Cunninghams playing together. Whether they happened to be performing with Silly Wizard or Relativity or Nightnoise they were consistently great! Luckily the Cunninghams always seemed to be teaming with other superbly talented musicians and the result is a mountain of wonderful Celtic music.

Thanks Andy, for all the fun and drinking and fantastic music, rest in peace. So another of the giants has left us ... I just hope when my time is up, I'll go to a place where at least I can hear them ... no matter what the heat is ;-)

Great clip NoRefills , the first time I saw them was in The third Eye Centre in Sauchiehall St , Glasgow in the early 70's , they were great then and still are.

Thanks for this, I'm glad you included the jokes and stories. I saw this on Austin City Limits years ago and have been a fan ever since. One thing I remember that cracked me up was when they did this long explanation of the medley they were about to play and how there was a traditional Scottish song that people would recognize because the Beatles had stolen it for a song and that people should listen for it, in the middle of the medley they broke into a cover of "Do You Want to Know a Secret"

I certainly understand and respect your desire to avoid copyright issues and respect royalties -- although if a performance isn't available to purchase any more it's frustrating. I'd certainly purchase a recording from the source if I could!

@Poodlepups that's what I was thinking as well when I heard it :) I play "the palomino waltz" and eventually listened to a recording of that where Phil combined it with "Donna's waltz". Love this whole video!!

@NoRefillsLeft Hello mate! I want to say many thanks to you for posting these three videos and ask if there is any chance maybe to share the whole concert? This is one of my favorite bands and I'd love to have this video in my collection, but it seems to be impossible to find it anywhere else :( Thank you in advance!
@NoRefillsLeft15 жыл бұрын
I have the entire concert on video, but (a) hesitate to post more due to ye auld copyright issues, and (b) my computer broke. :) Also, I really do my best to respect the rights of artists to collect their royalties. I hope these 3 clips are sort of a "trailer" for their music. :D The video has been out of print for years and I can't find any to buy. Hopefully the band members will get this show out on DVD some day.

Another musician just identified the second waltz at the 7 minute mark as "Donna's Waltz"...he knew because Robin Bullock recorded it and used to hear it all the time.

I thought the instrumental was "Peggy's Waltz" - I had a fabulous recording played on solo guitar by…Robin Bullock? Can't trust my memory 100% on either of those names.
@NoRefillsLeft7 жыл бұрын
No, it's called "Donna's Waltz," composed by Phil Cunningham (of Silly Wizard), on his CD "The Palomino Waltz."
@moragmacgregor67927 жыл бұрын
NoRefillsLeft ~ My error. I saw the credits at the end of this concert and they clearly said Donna's Waltz. The recording I had credited the tune to Phil C…but I could've sworn the name was different. My bad. It's a lovely tune.

He really had a good sense of humor in introducing songs. This is such a beautiful version of a great song. I wonder if the waters of the Bann act as an aphrodesiac or is it just its reputation. If I were a girl, I would avoid the Bann River or only go there in groups to avoid such young men, who are probably all flocking there in hopes of finding a naive young woman.

@c0gsinc0gs Agree, that was really funny. If you do a KZbin search for "Scottish Tradition: Phil Johnny Cunningham 2" by user UISTMAN59, you will see essentially the same thing, unfortunately without the lead-in that made it so funny (sadly, the clip is also out of synch). If you do a search for "Aly Bain and friends Cunningham", you will find the full-length show that UISTMAN59's clip is from. Johnny and Phil perform together twice in the show - also with Richard Thompson - great stuff. :)
