I beat gloire as a kid on my IBM PS2 hunk of junk, and didn't think much of it. came back to it now, and tried that level literally about 100x before I realized the clock speed was making it basically impossible - everything was blasting me from all over the place. So I lowered it, and all of a sudden I could actually react to all the lasers, little red balls of death, and so on, and beat it pretty much right away.

It must have taken me dozens of attempts to finally beat this game 25+ years ago. That red text at the end wasn't much, but it was a very gratifying ending to a truly awesome game.

Man, you let me get to see the ending which I couldn't no matter how hard I tried in my childhood... real great job. Finally get to see this almost 20 years later... I'm really touched.

This was my childhood obsession. I never did beat Gloire, even twenty-some odd years later. I may have to try tracking this down again... great job!

Love the final track music. Thanks for sharing 9Pix9!

Thanks for the video. I just beat Gloire for the first time. I've been playing this game since 1992 when I was 10 years old.

Does anyone besides me remember having to identify the name of one of the battle units in the installation process, or hearing Xacalite speak clearly?
@TKRuna5 жыл бұрын
The ship identification thing was a form of copy protection, it happened on startup. If you can hear Xacalite speak rather than crackle through the PC speaker, you're running version Silpheed 3.0 on an IBM PS1 with an audio/game card. Both of these are very rare.
@jpmagnus69095 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's how I remember this game, we had an IBM PS1 and the only unit name I could ever remember after a time was ''Daggar'' because the instruction booklet bit the dust sometime along the way. Never could beat Gloire either.

I would come to this level with full shielding, and still never got past that damn ship!

Awesome! I never made it past the part where you lost your engine, even after 20 years of trying. I never knew i was so close!

OMG. I remember crushing this on my Apple II-GS and being incredibly impressed by this ending after winning. Composition like this was extremely difficult back then and had to be hand coded note by note. There was no plug and play.
@datacipher Жыл бұрын
I don’t know if you’re a dimwit or just trying to lie to people, but NO, lol. This did NOT have to be “hand coded note by note”. If by “plug and play” (which is totally unrelated) you mean record midi tracks, of course you could by 1986 lol.

Finally I see the ending of this. I always die at the final boss and I just ended up giving up. I guess I didn't do enough damage to it. :(

I was only able to beat this game by using the turbo button on my 286 to drop it to 6mhz and slow the game down. I didn't have an MT32 but a Creative Labs CMS (before Sound Blaster) and it sounded pretty good on that too compared to the PC speaker anyway, roughly equivalent to Adlib FM synth.
@silpheedTandy12 жыл бұрын
*laughs* i love how you were very nearly almost dead before beating the level! and that's pretty gutsy going into level 20 without the 'B' powerup, lol! so it seems that with the adlib sound, you don't get "simulated voice/words" in the ending?
@dysamoria4 жыл бұрын
This is MT-32, not Adlib. Silpheed didn't have the voices until a version 3.2 that was released possibly only with the IBM PS/1 sound card.

I think they were setting up for a sequel there - note how there's a ship that flies out of the exploding Gloire at 2:55? Guessing that is meant to be Xacalite.

I heard Thexder was kind of the spiritual successor sequel, but I'm not sure if a true sequel ever got made.

I played this on a old CGA screen Vendex 8088. I managed to beat Gloire but the game was quite slow on that machine. I don't think I can beat it now at full speed.

Just looking at some old stuff at my parents house and found the two diskettes of the game. I remember playing it a lot with my brother when we were kids during the nineties. We never managed to kill that ship. We tried a lot of times. My brother got it to get red once and that was as far as we got. What memories. Thanks for posting By the way how many times did you try until you passed it for the video you uploaded?
@9Pix92 жыл бұрын
Only the once but there is a lot of luck in that first section of the boss fight. It's easier it you play this on an XT rather than a 286 or better as you have a little more time to react to those lasers which can make all the difference.
@alejandroIsaacCondat2 жыл бұрын
@@9Pix9 Yeah, I remember there was no way to avoid those lasers. We hated that. It is kind of cool for the video that you were so close to defeat, reminds us how difficult this ending was

Y'know, Gloire seems like it would be really awkward to fly, with everything jutting out like that. Not terribly aerodynamic...
@dysamoria4 жыл бұрын
Y'know there's no air in space to provide aerodynamics... No, I don't know why Silpheed has wings since it never seems to fly inside a planetary atmosphere...
@RiflemanIII12 жыл бұрын
It could also have been just plain built in space.
@RiflemanIII12 жыл бұрын
Since when do aerodynamics matter in space?
@evanparker7 жыл бұрын
when you want to land your space ship on a planet with an atmosphere and get lift from the wings.
