Got 6 from petsmart, all looked pristine, noob employee took 15 min catching them, stirred all the crap from the bottom of the tank, got them home, next day 1 died, 2 developed fungus, bumps, damaged scales and fins, So far remaining 5 are in recovery mode and doing better. Hopefully they will grow one day to nice chunky size.

Oh that is really sad to hear! sounds like they got super stressed out or maybe a rapid ammonia burn from the dirty tank. I hope they recover well for you!

My Silver Dollars absolutely love Corydora pellets and algae wafers. I feed them in one particular part of the tank and come feeding time they are patiently waiting for me to drop the pellets. We are getting a much larger tank soon and it will be interesting to see how big they will eventually get.

Totally agree! Hahaha my silver dollars love eating pleco wafers and I think the harder food really helps in wearing down their teeth as well. I’ve been feeding mine some Xtreme pleco scrapers recently and they’ve loved it hahaha. And exciting times ahead with the new tank it seems!

I would like to note these fish will absolutely jump out of the water if spooked. I've had two jump to freedom so far (they lived). Really suggest lids on the tank because of it. Its way too damn easy to spook them as well. They're an active fish but will dart when spooked, occasionally jump, and eventually hide in the corner until they feel safe again and come out.

@@BodgieFromStraya For sure. I will note they do absolutely eat a lotttt. They devour duckweed overnight. I have them currently picking on some hornwort and they aren't eating it as fast but they're still making progress. But just three baby silver dollars clean up and entire 20 gallon tank surface worth of duckweed in one day and still look for more food after hahahaha

I would love to have silver dollars. I'm going to purchase a 200 gallon community freshwater aquarium. I would like to have silver dollars, dennison barbs, pearl gouramis, pictus catfish, and angelfish. Does that sound like a compatible group of fish?
@BodgieFromStraya
@BodgieFromStraya 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Stacey! That sounds super exciting and 200 gallons is an awesomeeeeee size, I would probably the silver dollars only because of the angel fish and gourami which are firstly a bit slow and also long fins meaning that young silver dollars might nip. but the silver dollars, Pictus catfish, bronze cories and a bunch of large bodied tetras would be amazingggg

Soooo I've only ever used natural sunlight in my tank with 5 silver dollars for over a year because they flip the f*** out when I use to put the light on. Even tried super dim light and they are not having it. They are all beefy and about 5-6 inches. Any suggestions on what I could do to eventually turn the light on
@BodgieFromStraya
@BodgieFromStraya Жыл бұрын
Hey mate! It’s annoying how skittish these fish are right?! I’ve actually got a new batch of 9 fish which are way better but in regards to getting them used to lights, it might be a long task. I would start with having a slow ramp up period, a lot of the wifi control lights offer this function where you can set the light to slowly come up to full intensity over and hour or so. I would also look at feeding just as you turn lights on. So maybe over the course of a month, turn the light on, throw in food and leave the light on for 5 mins, then make it 10 mins and just double it. Once they realise light means food, they might get better. Final thing is to maybe add more silver dollars if you have the space. Adding in 5 more might diffuse the skittish behaviour they have. Hope this helps!

I do not think that the other fish are the issue. You may just have shy silver dollars so I would recommend to give them sinking or frozen foods. The silver dollars may be more comfortable when the lights are turned off to feel free to try that as well.

Hey ert wert! its totally normal, silver dollars have those glittery scales and you might even see them floating around your water since they fall off so easily. Ich will be all over the fish often starting in places like the tail and won't shine like these scales so you are in the clear!

@@BodgieFromStrayaIt’s unhealthy for the fish and cruel but won’t they stay small in a smaller tank? Idk
@BodgieFromStraya
@BodgieFromStraya 2 жыл бұрын
@@airborne15545 keeping them till adult size in a 30 gallon 100% is and im not at all advocating for it haha. But you are totally right, having those silver dollars in a tank that small will most likely stunt growth which means though yes the fish will sort of remain to the appropriate size of the tank, it causes a tonne of internal problems, organ issues, bone growth deformities. a great alternative to large growing silver dollars would be like a black widow tetra.
