In my third year at university we studied this film in my behavioral sciences class (I'm a Psych grad). It's one of the best dramatic representations of functional mental illness. What a lot of people dont realize is the relationship with the father is just as important as the romance. Daniro's character also has an undiagnosed illness. It's why he obsesses and goes off the rails so easily. But he is from a generation that NEVER recognized functional disorders, so he functioned as best he could through his life. It's a terrific film.

never recognized is a stretch if you never lived or dealt with a family member with these type of symptoms back then . Completely different than sitting in a classroom
@orkloven
@orkloven Жыл бұрын
@@TheRebuilt1 you dont know me or my history or my family or why I went into counseling, so dont guess at my knowledge or experience, please. Its statistical fact the the baby boomer generation more than 10 times as likely to not seek diagnosis or treatment as long as they could maintain themselves as functional adults. It's a generation that saw mental illness as weakness of spirit and mind, and parents saw it as their failure as parents. The social stigma was heavy and pervasive. Their children, products of this kind of denial, saw differently. The 60s and 70s generation far more easily embraced mental health. I used the term "never" to stress the point. Not in a literal sense. Sorry if that confused you.

Same. It's a really good representation of different kinds of mental illness, and the characters exist so far beyond the boundaries of "bipolar character, borderline character, ocd character". This is my personal fave movie of his, but The Place Beyond The Pines and Limitless are both very good, in addition to the Oscar roles (SLP, American Hustle, American Sniper, and A Star Is Born). The producer noms were for Sniper, ASIB, and Joker. And that's not even counting the Hangover movies and being Rocket friggin' Raccoon. OK, I'll shut up now.

Funny. You guys must have been going out of your mind when Doug Pederson got himself fired taking out Hurts for Nate Sudfeld in the embarrassing last game of the 2020 regular season. That was a travesty. Then- they get hardly anything back for Wentz and he's still so costly to them. Eagles have definitely seen better times. Good that you were able to steal a title from Belichick for his stupid move of benching Malcolm Butler. I'm sure Pat Sr. (DeNiro) made a lot of money off that game.

Cooper first hit the map as an "actor actor" when he starred in Limitless opposite DeNiro. He received his first Oscar nomination for Silver Linings Playbook, which was a great understated performance. The more you watch the performance, the more you see how effectively he conveyed Pat Jr without using words. It's really a master class in subtle acting. Another great understated performance is Casey Affleck in Manchester By the Sea. So far, Cooper has been nominated four times for acting -- Playbook, Hustle, Sniper, and Born. He was also nominated for producing Sniper, Born and Joker.

Great movie with a different story. All acting in it is great. You should check out “Joy” Cooper, Lawrence, and same director. Another different story with great acting. And “Limitless” with Cooper is always a fun watch

One of the best film in recent year with such a strong bonded chemistry of two 'broken' people united in love - Cooper ans Lawrence give career defining performances. De Niro's 'it's a sin' speech always makes me cry. Deep cut Brandon; great choice and commentary.

Therapist review of this film What it did well: Bradley pulls off elevation (which is like diet mania) pretty well. The staring, the directness, the quick speech, the fixation on certain things. He strikes me as being a tad on the spectrum as well tho. Not sure if that was intentional or he didn’t spend enough time with bipolar people. The dance was a perfect representation of the ups and downs of living with a mood disorder. And I really love the message of judging your success based on goals you set rather than societal values, like getting a 5 in a dance competition and them being so pumped. I loved that scene and moment. Jennifer Lawrence is so good in this. I love how direct she is which you do see in many people who have been to some kind of treatment facility. You get very comfortable calling each other out and moving past the bullshit. Chris tucker was also amazing in this. What I didn’t like: I have no idea what to make of Robert di neros character. He’s a great dad with some kind of undisclosed mental illness but it doesn’t really look like mania. It’s like trying to be bipolar but not enough symptoms for me to feel a clear diagnosis. Overall a really like the tone it sets that navigating mental illness is messy and confusing and that there’s also beauty and triumphs along the way. Which makes me forgive some of the unclear diagnosis

As a guy from Philadelphia, the cool thing about the scene where Tiffany rattles off the scores is that they are all factual. Also, I was at the Eagles-Cowboys game that the final bet was based on! All true Philly sports history.

Only score I don't think was factual was Eagles Seahawks score. Eagles haven't beaten the Seahawks in forever!! They got the Rays Phils score right though...as a Rays fan it made me sad again..lololol

Great reaction! No sure if someone has said it but: The dad has SEVERE undiagnosed OCD and possibly a bit of bipolar as well, which is why he irrationally blamed Pat for the Eagles losing.
