This movie holds such a special place in my heart. I've dealt with Bipolar 1 my whole life and I've been in Pat's shoes more than once. Bradley Cooper gives the best portrayal of a person with Bipolar and the consequences of trying to live without taking your medication. An absolute gem of a movie!

I have bipolar with psychotic features and I would say that both Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper did an amazing job in this movie , Jen totally earned her oscar with this, I say tho that Bradleys character in this movie is very,very lucky that he has a family to support him cause this illness can be absolutely devastating if you dont have a support system like this

@@Dontreallylikepretzels Same. I'm also Bipolar 2. That scene just hits me so hard. I've done shit like that. Not exactly, but similar my family tells me I can be like a racoon on crack. I don't ever remember them. If the mania is real bad I tend to not remember it I don't know why probably my brain protecting me from myself by not allowing me to remember. But, man that scene again I say just hits hard cause I know that feeling and am embarrassed by it. I know it can't be helped sometimes, but anyone with bipolar knows you still feel like shit for the way you acted even if you sometimes can't control it.

Same, Bipolar 2 here, I always refer to this movie when trying to help people understand what it's like to live with bipolar disorder. Both the characters of Pat and Tiffany really make me feel seen, understood even. Glad to see I am not alone in that.

My father is bipolar and this film is the best demonstration of this disorder. The highs, the lows, the violence, the vulnerability, the helplessness, the impulsiveness, the passivity, the grandeur...a film of incredible accuracy. For loved ones, it’s an often difficult roller coaster. This is a person you love and who suffers, but whose actions regularly boil over. They take and stop their medications. Make big plans that sink into nothingness filled with bitterness. The impacts are great for everyone involved, especially the sick person.

My dad is Bipolar 1 and sadly his depression has finally gotten hold of him. He hasn't been normal or manic for 3 years. But, doctors either over medicated him or under. They had him on Lithium so long he ended up in the ICU for lithium overdose. He would do the same things your describing. It is hard cause you love them, but it's a constant rollercoaster that you sometimes feel tired with them. Like, you understand it can't be helped but at the same time it's frustrating when they just throw away and give up on medication or become manic and throw them away cause they think they're cured. Doesn't help that I'm Biploar and feel like that will one day be me. I take my medication everyday but still it's scary to think I could one day just go off the rail completely and end up like him catatonic depressed.

Beautiful explanation. My mother is bipolar. She tried to commit you kno what several times when I was a kid. Now she's so medicated she seems like a zombie waking thru life. It's hard to see, but I can't do anything about it at this point, 20 years later. Try messing with her meds even a little and she starts randomly crying and whatnot. Like you said, it's a person you love, suffering, and you can't figure out wtf to do to help them. It's so painful to watch.

Y'all should watch As Good As It Gets, starring Jack Nicholson. It came to mind for several similarities; it deals with some heavy matters, but a rather light watch that'll leave you feeling good.

I have bipolar disorder myself and this movie is so special to me. I could be as aggressive and delusional as Pat back when I was unmedicated. This depicts it so realistically, and I love that Oak shared his own experiences with someone with bipolar. The comedy here gave me hope in my darkest days. Recovery is possible. You are not alone.

While this movie is great, the book is even better. It's written from Pat's perspective, and he actually can't remember what happened in the incident that got him put in the hospital - he and the reader find out gradually what happened over the course of the book as he has his flashbacks. So when he speaks with utter optimism about getting back with Nikki in the start, it's because he genuinely thinks they have a chance. It's also sadder as he feels like everyone around him is against him for no reason, until he remembers what happened. There's also no twist with Nikki appearing at the dance competition in the book, Pat is able to accept and move on from his past without having to meet her. I think both the book and movie do a good job of demonstrating how in many cases mental illness is inherited. Nobody in Pat's house is well, his dad has very clear anger problems and his mother is very anxious all the time. But because they're from an older generation, they were never diagnosed with any mental illnesses and that allowed their unhealthy habits to fester and then influenced how they raised their kids. It reflects on how the parents react when Pat has his meltdowns - they're not equipped to handle them, and it exacerbates their own issues. Even Pat was only diagnosed quite late into his life.

Having Nikki is a much stronger ending in my opinion. Having to face the monster that ruined your life, smile at it, and then say goodbye is the pinnacle of character growth

@@trequor I disagree. Firstly, it's just not realistic that Nikki would come back, seeing as she had the restraining order and very much already moved on from Pat. She had no reason to be there for herself. And in the book, Pat has to deal with the fact that he's never going to get the kind of closure from Nikki that he feels he needs, but he is able to move on and be happy anyways. Similarly to how Tiffany wasn't able to have closure like she needed due to Tommy's death. But the point is that even without closure, they could find their silver linings. The movie feels too neatly wrapped up in comparison, life doesn't work like that especially with these circumstances.

It's no less realistic than the rest of the contrived story. Because it is a story, not real life. Having a proper ending is a GOOD thing. If you want open ended mess real life has a limitless supply.

@@trequor I work in mental health. I also write as a hobby. The point of this story is to show Pat's personal growth, the movie made it into more of a romcom than it was meant to be. If you want the standard romcom ending there are already plenty of those out there - I appreciate when a story tries to do something a little different. It's not open-ended because it's clear in the book that that chapter of Pat's life is closed. He is able to "face the monster" which is his own fear and anxiety, not Nikki. It's fine to want escapism sometimes, but having that in all stories would kind of be monotonous for me. Also, I remember they changed the ending of I Am Legend to the classic Hollywood style ending, and it's general consensus that that was a terrible decision compared to the book's more nuanced and sombre ending. The Hunger Games also doesn't have a neat, "everything's great now" ending. There's many more examples I can think of. Just because this movie is more lighthearted doesn't mean it has to completely abandon realism - if not, why didn't they win the dance competition? Why only get a 5?

@@ActuallyAnanya I dont think you understood what I said. I Am Legend is irrelevant because the ending has a different problem. Suzanne Collins is TERRIBLE at writing endings. All three hunger games books have just the worst endings. It's a major reason why they havent aged very well. There are PLENTY of poorly written stories with bad endings written by people who wanted to be different. An ending doesnt have to be standard Hollywood to be good, but it does have to conclude the story. Otherwise what was the point?

This film is a true enigma: A big box office, star-studded ensemble shot in an American indie film style with a quirky script resembling an off-Broadway adaptation. You can draw a few parallels to Casey Affleck's heartbreakingly bleak "Manchester By the Sea," but Russell's direction and edits keep the small story moving like a great coach moving the football down the field. Despite all the rapid, overlapping dialogue, the whole effort delivers a real movie experience without the "based on a play" vibes. Silver Linings' silver linings: Though mental health initiates the story and pokes its head out from time to time, the film doesn't posture itself as an "issue" movie never dwelling too long on Bipolar Disorder. Chris Tucker's an absolute scene stealer and lights up a room. DeNiro's a solid familial center, but Pat's (Cooper) mother Jacki Weaver low-key anchored the film's emotions for everyone else to react. Her character's restraint compared to the rest of the cast's over-the-top moments is the real winner for me. So about that enigma -- to BOTH show a flawed but "heart of medicated gold" main character find his way out of chaos and confusion while literal supporting characters pop in and out of the foreground. Cooper's mantra "Excelsior" [Latin for "ever upwards"] pushes him to keep improving while we as the audience root for him to succeed in life and love like Eagles fans cheering our hearts out.

I read the book and I have to say I enjoyed more the movie. The book is very serious and sad. The lack of support of his family. For starters Pat spend 4 years in the mental institution not 8 months, his dad wasn't supported he was isolated, the mom even treat him with divorce. Pat missed a lot of milestone for his brother's life like his graduation, promotion in the law firm and his wedding. It was really hard for him to realized he was in a mental institution for so long. Nikki re-married and had a daughter. In the book his obsession's with Nikki was extremes and the dance was completely difference. There was no bets on the Eagles and no parley either. He was beating pretty badly for going to a bad neighborhood without realizing it, the only friend who came to visit him was Danny. Yes Tiffany run with him, because she wanted to know if he was strong enough to do the dance, it was a contemporary style and the son was "A Total Eclipse of the Heart" . Tiffany confined in him the guilt she felt since the last time she talked to her husband they had an argument and the reason why she slept with so many ppl was bc somehow she was picturing Tommy instead of the person, like she wanted him to know that she still loved him, that's why she was so depressed. Pat never judged her for that.. Veronica didn't want him near her daughter. At the end he defined his relationship with Tiffany as his" closest friend" with the possibility for something more. He said at the end something like " this woman knows my condition, knows how many meds I take during the day and she still chooses to be near me" . I hope this help. I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH.

I’m bipolar 2 so my mood swings aren’t so severe, but mania can in fact have you up for days talking nonsense so the scene where he wakes his parents to find something resonates with me. That is the shit I would do when I wasn’t medicated. Honestly, seeing bipolar 1 in person with my dad it can really be that way but it’s not so blunt. The movie has flaws but it is one of the better ones at showing what bipolar is and can do.

This movie was unique to me because I have family that have been dealing with bipolar disorder for many years, and this is a very realistic depiction of manic episodes in particular. Not many forms of media have captured the reality of it. Even to the point of the hyper focused obsession Pat has. The acting, writing, and story are just so well done. I feel like the people who made this movie expressed the experience of mental illness in such a genuine way, I'm appreciative that they allowed comedy to be a part of it, because sometimes you have to laugh as well.

Loved this movie as well. Randomly bought it on blue ray back when it released, and had no expectations back then. A fun quirky movie I would recommend from around the same time is Grand Budapest Hotel. Really fun movie where you see Ralph Fiennes as a hilarious comedic actor in Wes Anderson's weird universe :-)

I love this movie. It’s one of my favorites! Not only am I from PA and my father is also an Eagles fan, but I relate to the mental illness aspect of it having struggled with anxiety and depression all of my life. And you’re right…almost everyone in this movie is messed up in their own way, and a lot of people do struggle with mental illness even if they don’t know it. I can see now why this movie won awards, and I’m impressed that Jennifer was so young in this movie and acted in this role so well!

I adore this movie it has such a soul and life to it, the feel is different from anything else I've seen. and the actors are too enchanting, their acting is no less than perfection here. stunning movie, truly touching in a surprising way. ❤ There's a philosopher called Rabbi Solovachic who once said that "you love the person you give to". meaning, when you make it a goal, to give to someone, this is the road to love and happiness. by the actual act of giving you develop strong emotions to the human being you give to. it's a very impactful quote for me, and I just wanted to refer to the comment said here at the end about the love between Tiffany and Pat being a bit sudden- I feel like it grew rather beautifully. they love because they were giving to each other. He gave her his time, effort and good intentions&friendship. helped her with her ambitions. she gave him acceptance, compassion and a healthy structure to actually get better in. gave him a goal and a wall to rely on. that what I think is so beautiful here, they gave each other a lot, which is to me what makes this so much better than a regular love-at-first-sight type of story, which can be great too do not get me wrong, but this is a the right story about these specific human beings choosing to love each other in a pretty complex reality ❤

it’s WILD to me that Jennifer Lawrence was only 21 in this film and earned her first oscar for it as well. She did such an amazing job.

Definitely recommend some of David O. Russel’s other movies like The Fighter, a sports boxing movie starring Mark Whalberg, Amy Adams and Christian Bale (who won an Oscar for an amazing transformative performance), and check out American Hustle, which is another great comedy drama with an all-star cast of Bale, Adams, Cooper, Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner. I think you guys will have a great time with those movies.

Glad I stayed to listen to the fourth guy's opinion. I had a feeling he was going to touch on something the others did not, and that is, the way the father manipulated Pat. He said he wanted to get closer, wanted to spend time with him, and if I recall, even said that maybe he didn't spend enough time with him in the past, but his intention was to get Pat involved in the next bet. He believes Pat has been a good luck charm, evident probably in more scenes than one but certainly evident in the scene where he tells him to sit down and then the team he's watching scores - Robert De Niro's face tells you that he believes it's because of Pat. Maybe some of what the dad says up in Pat's room is sincere, but you don't get the feeling his father has told him that before. Excellent film. Really enjoyed your reaction, guys.

This movie was filmed 3 streets behind my parents house an I remeber being there the night they shot the book flying out the attic window and the Llanarch dinner they went to has a plaque at the booth they shot plus I got to see Bradley Cooper who’s from around here Robert De Niro, and Jennifer Lawrence 👍🏼👍🏼

Again as someone who's married to someone with a serious mental health disorder both him and I agree if you can't laugh at it sometimes you're gonna loose it. My husband calls himself the families resident crazy person. I use the lime calm down crazy with him alot. The medicine talk at the beginning was so spot on. The accuracy with how people treat you, from the fear, to the stereotyping, the stigma, the patronizing. Then the people who don't understand and are like why can't you just get over it. I love that it shows how you can still live a happy life.

I have (had? bipolar disorder? It's been 20 years since I've been manic; now I'm just depressed) and it is spooky to see Pat's experiences. I also had auditory delusions, thinking the car radio and TV commercials were talking directly to me. And one time I Hulked out and broke a door in a house because I thought I was locked in a bedroom. Man, were they mad at me. They didn't make me pay for the door, fortunately. And I'm not a very strong woman!

Great reaction guys, this film is awesome and the actors were all immense. I watched this film when I was dealing with my own mental health issues, these films do a good job of getting you through. I used to watch Silver Linings along with Perks of Being a Wallflower and It's a funny kind of story, all three do a good job with their casts and the balancing of humour around serious storylines. (I'd recommend the latter two films as well, would be good to see you react to them but even if not, they're a good watch all the same)

If you're looking for some heavier stuff, I recommend Grave of the fireflies. It's an anime from 1988 and it's the type of the movie you can watch only once but still worth it.
