I didn't think RD was out of character in '28 pranks later' as a result of how she was written. The problem was with the pranks themselves: Rarity and the sewing machine cake, spike and the endless cycle of scrolls, those were funny. But putting a brick in Mr. cake's sandwich? Dumping AJ's bed in the pig pen in the middle of the night? Switching Cranky's wig with a skunk? If RD had just put peanuts in Mr. Cakes sandwich, dumped AJ in the middle of a field, and switched Cranky's wig for a clown's wig that would have been funny and the story could have been exactly the same. But nope, we have needlessly cruel pranks and RD responding to the them like she's some kind of sadist. It's no wonder everyone thinks she's out of character.

I think the other major issue with it is how, Rainbow's character in the episode feels like a complete downgrade, given the lessons she learned since The Mysterious Mare Do Well. Now regardless of what others thought of it, I personally still found that to be at the very least a much better episode than 28 Pranks Later. Though in all fairness, I'll acknowledge it actually having a more satisfying ending than The Mysterious Mare Do Well.

I understand that Rainbow's a flawed character, because she really is. However, the episode went ahead and pushed her flaws to such an extreme that she came off as rather unlikable, and makes the viewer want to hate her, despite the past character growth that would've prevented that, which I don't think was ever the writer's intention there. So it could very much likely be a case of poor writing.

Still, after 5 seasons of character development, Rainbow would've learned not to go off the deep end with her interests (and yes, that includes pranking). When the episode opened up with her pulling such a low unfunny prank on Fluttershy of all folks, it shows a complete lack of empathy on her part, going against everything she's supposed to stand for.

RD never was agsint pranking Fluttershy, that was just Pinkie telling her not to and RD giving a "Whatever," response and not trying to fight it, one little exchange years ago that she barely paid attention to. PLUS we have all of Fluttershy's growth since then, AND the fact that what RD did hear, is pretty damn similar to what Fluttershy did to the rest of them on Night Mare Night. Given RD knew Fluttershy was able to pull a prank like that, it would figure she'd be fine having it pulled back on her. Also, no this wasn't downgrading, sliding back, any of that, every single thing here is 100% in character for RD, this is just an issue of all the more negative aspects of her character, being short sighted, impulsive, tunnel visioning on one thing and failing to see the larger scope, having trouble contextualizing others feelings, etc...all coming together at once. Like Pinkie in Filli Vanill, it wasn't OOC, it was just the worst aspects of her character aligning at the same time.

I'm impressed with how succinctly you pointed out the moral miscalculations and plot weaknesses while still leaving us with a positive / hopeful perspective for the season. Dungeons and Discord was my favorite. We just started playing Ponyfinder so the episode had that - "No Way!" impact on us. Crazy timing on a personal level combined with the unexpected and enjoyable nature of the episode made that our highlighted Saturday.

Glad you mentioned how awesome Snails was. That was BY FAR my favorite part of ANY of these four episodes combined. :D It was so gratifying to see a character so thoroughly picked on by the writers finally get such an awesome, shining moment, and his lines were so droll and witty. XD And the rant by Fluttershy was also fantastic, esp. when coupled with Pinkie Pie's uncharacteristic quietness (role reversal, anyone?)

I wished they added a character into the show who was completely serious and professional and is always there to mock the main characters - not to be rude, but just stating an observation - someone like Dr Cox from Scrubs, Cnl Potter from Mash, or Wash from Red vs. Blue. Someone who's not a jerk, just more mature and a lot more experienced than everyone. Someone to raise his eyebrow at everything the audience knows is stupid, but not there to be a foil or wet blanket. I'd love a character like that in MLP:FIM. Also, someone who can actually show-up Rainbow Dash, and push her to better herself.

First off, I love how you included Rainbow as one of the "older sisters." Considering that aside from that moment in Sleepless in Ponyville. Nothing has established them as becoming surrogate family members. Heck, we've yet to learn if Scoots is an orphan or not. Second, I and many others speculate Thorax may have a part to play in the finale. But I'm unsure if Chrysalis will show up for that. Third; thus far, Dungeons and Discords stands as my top favorite episode of the season. Maybe It's because I'm a fantasy nerd or maybe because I once played D&D back in high school. All the same, the entire left me screaming "I WANNA PLAY TOO" at my screen several times. Finally...oh, Silver; you are in for a real treat when you watch The Fault in our Cutie Marks

Great rundown on the episodes, Silver! One thing I will say is that I feel a bit more positively about "Buckball Season." When Flutters and Pinkie started to outperform Rainbow and AJ, I thought the latter two would get angry and resentful of being outperformed by two newbies. Instead, they had the maturity to see that Fluttershy and Pinkie were the best ones to take up those positions and represent Ponyville. Even with its flaws, I thought that was a rather nice show of maturity for both RD and AJ.

One thing I like about Silver Quill's reviews is that when he gives negative criticism he calmly and rationally makes his point. He's not like many other reviewers who start huffing and swearing when something they don't like happens. Silver Quill knows how to give intelligent critiques about what could have gone better while not forgetting that's it's a cartoon and you shouldn't get worked up over it. I feel many fans could learn from this.

Oh and finally, the whole "He changed their minds with a song." No he didn't, look at their faces, they are all still glaring at him, none of them were won over.. except Twilight. None of the rest came around and were willing to give Thorax a chance until The Princess of Friendship tossed her support behind him and did so first. it was Twilight saying they should give Thorax a chance that convinced Shining and Cadance, and from there the rest of them. And with Twilight, it seemed it was less Spike's song winning her over and changing her mind about things, then it was, this was the first time she actually knew what was going on and had the full story, leading to her just doing what she likely would have done from the start if Spike had just thought, hey maybe I should ask the Princess of Friendship about a Changeling that wants to be friends with ponies. That's really my only issue with the ep, is that Spike never thought to try just going to Twilight and explaining the situation to her. (Though yes it was a bit rushed, but rushed endings are par for the course with this show, it's the one overarching flaw I'd say is endemic to the series.) Oh and, the whole thing about your issue with Buckball Season... ummm... what? No, not trying to be snarky I just... have no idea what you are trying to say was wrong with it... that, everypony was acting fully in character?

I'm glad you pointed that part out. Twilight was the one that vouched for Spike in the end which caused everyone to at least listen and give Thorax a chance. As for why Spike didn't go to Twilight in the first place, I bet he was thinking about the pain that she went through in regards to the changelings too so it might have been hard for him at the time. That's why I'm glad it was limited to just Twilight, Spike, and Starlight going to the Crystal Empire instead of the rest of the Mane 6 in that situation.

***** Yeah as far as ponies knew, Changelings might have been a hive mind, just drones in service to the Queen with no will of their own. Unless, what if that IS the case? Not full on dominating, but they have a natural Hive Mind type deal, not a full on Borg level one, but one that keeps them all connected and influences their personality, makes them obey the Queen and act like she thinks they should, and Thorax's 'mutation' that made him friendly, was never developing a connection to the group mind in the first place. Maybe having a defective, whatever part of their anatomy gives that to them?

The one thing that annoyed me about buckball was that pinkie's and flutters' talent easily outmatch AJ, a well-trained professional, and RD, a very athletic newbie. I understand that pinkie is good, because she's random, so virtually everything she does looks legit, but Fluttershy is not athletic. Even if she could throw the balls she did, she definitely shouldn't last longer than RD stamina-wise. This is a really bad lesson MLP teaches here, because talent never outweighs hard work if you don't work hard as well. But hurray for Snails! Loved his part! And yes, I lauged REALLY hard when Derpy won the Derby against young Rarity. After her performance in the Battle of the Bands and her being a comic relief replacement for RD in that one flying competition it's so nice to see her being successful at something. Derpy is best pony! Some seasons ago she shared my rank #1 with AJ, but AJ has been dumbed down in the last few seasons, presumably because the fans said that she isn't a mane character, because she doesn't learn anything, because she's so wise already and a pillar of support for the otheres. I disagree with that opinion, though, and I would've preferred her to remain as wise as she was.

Having just watched Dungeons and Discords.... I can't help but feel overwhelming joy when Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash hug while proclaiming "Guys Night!" Not just because it's the best pony with the rainbow pony, but because it was only them who joined in when it could have easily been the entire Mane Six. ...Also Rainbow Dash as a Rouge. Huh.

I liked that Carts was very low tension, why does there need to be some big, forced, contrived competition at stake rather then, exactly what we got, just them having fun? or at least trying to. The fact the CMC were all so quick to and able to agree on who was going for what with no fighting or competing agsint each other was one of my favorite parts of it. Though yeah, the adults could have been written better. Mostly, I can see them doing this, it was just how quickly they went that far that felt a bit off. If they had built up to being such obsessed control freaks rather then already start in high gear, it might have worked better. But showing RD, directly, what being on the receiving end of this kind of thing felt like really was the best way to make the lesson sink in. She's a very, very experience based learner, she only truly takes something in and fully understands it after experiencing it herself. It's one of the reasons she is so insensitive, it's not that she doesn't care, or is incapable of empathy, it's that she simply has an extremely hard time contextualizing others thoughts unless she has something relateable to compare them to, and often just does not think about how her actions impact others.

Pinkie as the bard.....were this one of the Pathfinder campaigns I've done, she'd be the most terrifying thing on the board. No seriously, did a run of the Iron Gods campaign with an all arcane caster group, including two bard archetypes; archeologist and dervish; and we were driving the DM to frustration with our efficiency, with the two bards being terrifying when we actually fought something. Lvl 3 we took down a RADIOACTIVE Manticore without it landing an attack. Forget RPG conventions, fear the bards! Especially the pink ones!

I'm curious if you'll mention the idea that Gabby may not actually be exceptional in ability for a griffin but merely above average for a race that has all the abilities of lions and eagles put into a mythically powerful form (combined with dexterity that among ponies only unicorns can match or beat).

Thank you! Finally someone has the same problem with Times they are a Changeling that I do. No other reviewer I've seen has touched on the fact that the Mlp staff seems to like shoving other races besides ponies into boxes, Griffons are Greedy, Yaks are Violent (Except the babys), Dragons are aggro, and Changelings are Evil. The only good members in those races are ones that have been affected by ponies (or pony like dragons) and abberants. I would have liked Times they are a Changeling more if they didn't just make all the changelings besides Thorax evil. They could have just as easily said they need love to survive and sometimes they get desperate enough that it leads them to situations like the invasion of Ponyville. But nope all changelings are evil, except this one but he was born weird so don't hold out for the others.

I would not throw in the towel yet, Silver Quill. There's still the chance that everyone accepting Thorax so quickly might have been premature should Queen Chrysalis return in the finale and put Twilight and the Mane Six out of commission before launching her second attack on Equestria, this time for revenge. Cadence and Shining Armor would have to put their faith and trust in Thorax in that he's able to use what he learned from them to convince some of the Changelings to defect and aid the Royal Family rather than Queen Chrysalis while Starlight and her team of unlikely allies rescue the Mane Six to save Equestria. Otherwise, if they don't, they pretty much are giving Flurry Heart to Chrysalis on a silver platter.

Not quite agreeing with your take on 28 Pranks Later. Oh, you're spot on about Dash being in character, but it's exactly because of her character that things played out the way they did. Applejack and then the others saying that Dash was being lazy was right. Dash just stopped listening after that, ignoring the 'figure out who likes what pranks and who doesn't like pranks at all' part. With the talking tactic a monumental (and predictable) failure, the only way Dash was going to learn was through experience. Which is pretty par for the course with her. One of the ways I identify with her, the need for hands-on learning.

I won't say that Rainbow was OOC in 28 Pranks Later, but it felt like she totally regressed into Season 1-2 territory, rather than keeping in context with how she has grown over time. I think the episode in question would have been better if they had written it to where the prank was Rainbow Dash getting payback on Fluttershy for The Scare-Master, but gets too caught up in the moment & takes it too far, (and it gets acknowledged/brought up properly), the others confront her, particularly Pinkie Pie, basically reminding her about not to prank Rainbow Dash, etc. They manage to resolve the issue, but it turns out Fluttershy is holding a grudge, and she pranks Rainbow back. This gets her goat, so they get into a prank war with each other that moves into the town & it irritates everyone else, leading into the cookie zombie prank that the town would play on both Rainbow & Fluttershy for letting things get too out of control between them. I think this would have given this episode a much more unique dynamic than what we ultimately got.

Honestly, Dungeons and Discords is now by far my favorite episode, the humor by far replaced the thing at the top of my list for 'Things That can Quickly Put a Smile On My Face,' which oddly enough before was Patton Oswalt fanboying.
