Silver Reed Punchcard Machines - Knitting a Round Neck in Fairisle Pattern

How to knit a round neck whilst patterning in Fairisle. There are several steps to follow to successfully maintain the pattern after you have divided the front for a neck shaping. I have demonstrated on an SK280 model, but the same principles will apply to any Silver Reed punchcard machine using the drum patterning mechanism. These were formerly branded under the names of Studio, Singer, Knitmaster and Empisal, depending on your geographical location.

Greetings from France 🥰 Congratulations 🏆❤️. I always had a problem having the identical pattern on both sides. YOU ARE A BLESSING TO ME. I am truly grateful and proud of you. I have model KH894 as well the G Carriage since 1989. After my aggression in 2014 which paralyzed me, on a wheelchair with spine injuries, I never was able to knit by hand or machine NO WILL EITHER. Underwent a spine surgery in 2015 which was successful, back on my feet but no desire to knit UNTIL a few days ago. Mysteriously knitting machine tutorials began popping into my eyes and GOT HOOKED. I remember Nothing about machine knitting but the videos helped me enjoy the present. This particular video brought JOY AND SUNSHINE INTO MY HEART you solved the puzzle. Thanks for such a detailed step by step video, perfect filming and well explained. Getting excited to knit again. Thanks for sharing caring and making a 70 year old SMILE again 🥰🌹♥️. Thank you so much for this video, I literally made my first vest front and used your video for the neck shaping. One thing that I did noticed happen to me was that returning the needles de C position with both Russel levers on hold and the Side levers on (dot) that I dropped the stitches 😢 I noticed you never did toggle from triangle to circle, but if I don't my carriage will drop the second color stitches with the carriage on Stockinette (^)

If you are knitting the front neck shaping in Fairisle, you have to leave the side levers back on the triangle the whole time, because this is what tells the carriage to pattern knit, instead of Fairisle. Also, when returning the second half of the garment into work, you cannot just push the needles to C as you would with stocking stitch. You must put them back to B position and return the stitches to the hooks of the needles using a transfer tool. This is what I do in the video.

Great video but as you knit the shoulder shaping in plain knit. How do you sew it up. Does the plain knitting show?

Hi Angela, I join the shoulder seams on the machine, rather than sewing them together. There are only a few rows of plain knitting and - for me - it doesn’t detract from the appearance. I shall try and find a photo. Best regards, Sally.

Hi, I can't seem to knit anything using my punch cards. When I select TUCK and run the handle over , half the stitches don't get knit so you run the handle again and the entire thing is ruined with yarn hanging over the needles. What am I doing wrong? I follow the instructions how to knit with punch cards. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Penelope, when you say stitches don’t knit, you do realise with tuck stitch that that is meant to happen? The yarn is laid over the needles for 2, 3 or 4 rows and is then knitted back later. Also, not every punchcard is suitable for tuck, as you cannot have two or more needles side by side tucking. This could be the cause of your trouble. The blanks on the card are the tuck stitches, the holes knit, so look for cards that don’t have more than one blank next to each other. If you have the basic card set, card 3 is a good one to try.
