An efficient way of rinsing solids is to keep a layer of solvent on top of solids and replenish at the same rate that pours out. Works beautifully with peptide synthesis on resins, we use addition funnels to replenish the solvents

I feel like it would be so much more time efficient for you to rinse the cement silver in wide container and pour off the supernatant through the Buchner funnel rather than meticulously and dangerously rinsing it with boiling water in a Buchner funnel and turning the thick paste with a glass rod. My thoughts as a professional chemist

I'd rinse the silver powder by stirring in one of those 10 gal buckets with plenty of water, then after waiting a few minutes to mostly settle, siphoning the liquid into the funnel setup. That should get the finer silver powder out without loading up the filter. At that point you could either return the filtered material to the wash bucket for further rinsing with the bulk, or rinse separately. The second option might speed up rinsing of the bulk as there will be fewer and fewer suspended grains.

I could use salt to precipitate silver chloride then convert it to pure silver with lye and sugar. But the amount of waste created doubles. And the platinum group metals (if any) still have to be cemented on copper. I prefer cementing everything on copper. It gets all the precious metals for further refining.

Does it make sense to convert your cemented silver (or Ag shot), to cash via your Ebay account? Or, do you consider this material as a horde you're hold for Ag price escalation? Is there a reason why you were treating the blue solution with the nitric acid in the beaker with the copper pipes instead of waiting until your silver jars with the sterling silver plates was empty and having that sterling silver react with the nitric acid instead of the copper pipes in the other container? Isn’t it precipitating metallic silver but also reacting with the metallic copper and putting copper into solution in the beaker with the pipes?

I love your videos, and chemistry really is over my head most times when it comes to metal refining, but I noticed a huge problem in your methodology. Don't load the cement silver into the filter, just filter off the blue liquid in the bucket, so all the cement silver is in the bottom, pour your filtered blue liquid into the copper bucket, then add the boiling water to the cement silver bucket, mix well and filter the water through the filter, still leaving the cement silver in the bucket, when it starts to run mostly clear and you've finished with your last water rinse, do one finial rinse pouring the cement silver water finial rinse in through the filter to catch the very little cement still in the water, hopefull its settled down to the bottom of the bucket and you didn't catch too much. You'll go easier on your filters, you won't have to stir at all, and you'll catch a lot more of the silver cement, cause man every time you dump into the copper bucket you are losing way to much of the silver cement, and the rinsing of whats in the filter doesn't do anything if 90% of the rest of the cement silver never went through any rinsing because its in the bottom of the bucket, so its just wasted time and resources the other way. You shouldn't have an issue with the bucket as the catch all for the silver cement when that's what it has been in the whole time so just rinse and stir in the bucket, much easier.

I'm pretty sure no matter how thorough you wash your cement you are always going to end up with some copper oxydes. I've seen some insolubles form on copper in dilute solutions. Making crusts can be fun ! Not on pipe, on bars though. I kept a few but they are still fragile. Still, very nice to look at even without a magnifying glass because of big crystal size from concentrate solution. The crust themselves are about 2-3 inches long. It's fun but pointless I'll admit :)

If the copper does passivate is there a way to restart the reaction?

@@sreetipshow do you restart it? Is it possible to do a video if it’s a longer process?
@sreetips
@sreetips Жыл бұрын
Just remove the copper, add a few ml nitric, stir, put the copper back in. If it won’t get through the passive layer then put in a fresh piece of copper.

Great vid! Do you capture the volume of silver you generate and then recover? Curious how much silver you go thru in a week or month.

My biggest question to you sir and I'm just curious is if the silver is plus .999 why do you further try to refine it With a silver cell If the pure Ness is not gonna be much more than what it was then when it was Silver cement no disrespect to you but .999 fine an .9999 are not much price deference
