There’s a trick when you heat up a canned food, dent the side of the can. Then put the can in the water to be boiled and when the dent comes out it means the food is good and hot temperature wise.

@@lydiajohnston4954 just remember that when you open the can it may still have some pressure so it might come out of the can and heating the can in water will disperse the heat around the can. And this it is also a security measure that you wont smell the food warming up like in an open pot,however if you are worried about that happening a cold camp might be more in order.

Theres a lot you can do with such a simple setup. This is the sort of thing i carry if im on a day or weekend hike. I like that you use store bought items and not the sort of thing found in camping shops. I like adding water to thin egg noodles aling with some bullion and scallions. Leave for ten minutes to cool and the noodle have rehydrated. So much better to my palate than instant noodles. There are simple recipes that work well. One of my favourites is to lightly heat chorizo then add half a tube of tomato puree, a good spoonfull of paprika and a tin of potatoes along with its water. After about twenty minutes of simmering you have a hot stew packed full of flavour.

WRT instant coffee, unless you prefer instant, you might like Foldger's Coffee Singles. It's coffee in a big tea bag. You steep it while finishing cooking, and it tastes like real coffee, because it is.

I love my little Trangia stove. I even bought another with a cook set for it, minus the kettle. I mainly got it for power outage indoor cooking since propane isn't allow or to be used indoors in most cases. I also got one of those Evernew DX titanium stoves with the burner for it. (The trangia simmer ring/snuffer works for it too.) This way I have a fuel base stove and I can still use it as a twig stove in a pinch. That stove will fit in a 750ml cup. I carry a terracotta plant saucer with it so as to not start ground fires. Just a tip I learned online from others is to put carbon welding felt into the center of the trangia or other stoves like it and then a piece of stainless steel mesh over it. It helps prevent spills somewhat and makes the fuel last a little longer. Take Care and Stay Safe, y'all.

👍 .. that works very well. I filled my Trangia Burner loosely with Ceramic / Glass Wool, topped with a tight-fitting roll of Carbon Felt. This removes the need for the SS Mesh on top. In addition to the Spillage issue, other advantages include quicker lighting and getting the pot onto the burner with the flame being snuffed, in minus temperatures and a more controlled burn, especially with the simmer ring. Carbon Felt / Ceramic / Glass Wool inserts are now a given in the majority of my Alcohol Burners .. very importantly to reduce the spillage hazard. The Swiss have absolutely no sense of humour with those who burn down their forests .. eye-watering fines being the order of the day.

What about the folks in the country that use propane tanks for heating / cooking? Some folk are scared to use sterno / alcohol indoors to cook. They are making stoves that use canned fuel to heat (with fan blade) and cook indoors for power outage.

There are so many options that in my opinion it’s hard to mess up. The food options available are so much better these days than back when we were camping in the 70’s. Pulled pork and rice sounds good to me.

Carry your lunch to school - either brown bagging it or you got out the Scooby-Do METAL lunchbox... Parents had PLENTY of stories like that. And grandpa loved to embellish the snow level when walking 10 miles to school too lol I bought a Trangia and a Redcamp. Reason for the Redcamp is it came with that exact type stand whereas Trangia is too cheap to include one. If you want to see an alcohol flame in the sunlight, put a pinch of salt in the alcohol. It will turn the flame orange so you can see it. Put rice, beans, similar in a Thermos soup container. Add hot water. Replace lid. It will cook without adding heat after a while.

Hello Blackie- Im glad you do videos like this to show people who may be new to the craft, some options they can have. I know from experience that everyone has their own ways, methods, ect.... I carry a small Esbit folding stove that can store 4 feul tabs inside of it when collapsed for carrying. It hardly takes up any space and weighs close to nothing. I was taught the acronym KISS many years ago and try to apply it to bushcrafting. Good video as always and you be safe out there in that heat down there- Carry On-

Spam also comes in 2-3 ounce foil pouches. If you want beef, the tins of corned beef work really well. You can also get a canister of bone broth powder and just pack a little in a zip lock pouch or small pill bottle. Eating some pecans or peanuts is simpler than cooking noodles or rice. And of course, beef jerkey or smoked sausages. If you have a german deli around, they probably make jaeger (hunter) sausage, which doesn't need refrigeration. I've been doing keto/carnivore for a while, so a lot of my camping ingredients are focused on good saturated fats and voiding bad seed oils, overly processed food or any carbs like noodles, rice, potatoes or bread. I've also been using the Trangia mini and various clones for about 10 years and they work great. Methanol fuel is cheaper and better at your car racing supply store. A foil wind screen around the stove and pot makes it cook a lot better. Esbit and Zen make excellent light, cheap, stainless steel triangular pot/stove stands for the Trangia mini that pack flat.

Good tips. There also is the famous "landjaeger" - basically a portion sized salami. It has a long shelf life without needing refrigeration. Unlike the venerable Erbswurst it is still around and probably will be for some time. I switched from Esbit to the BCB fire dragon. The stove can burn more fuels and still is a compact package when carrying the fuel tablets inside the stove.

It's a traditional thing to have a hot beef or chicken flavoured drink in the winter in the UK. Football (soccer) fans used to drink it at half time to keep out the cold on the terraces. There's a specific brand, Bovril. I seem to remember seeing jars of Bovril at the supply cabin used by Scott at the beginning of his Antarctic expedition (didn't go so well!). The other good thing is it doesn't go off indefinitely, those jars in the cabin were over 100 years old and still could have been used today (though I saw no one volunteering to try it!)

I like my MSR alpine pot. Holds everything, locks tight and I am not a tripod cooker. I’ve even froze a chicken breast, packed noodles, bullion cubes, celery and carrots inside it and made chicken noodle soup that night. Bannock on a stick and you have a feast there. In a long term situation, you’ll eat plenty of odd soups, stews and breads from foraging.

Some folk fill their trangia style burner with too much alcohol. It does burn longer, but if the burner gets too hot it can cause flare ups and cause flames over two foot high. One sail boat person almost burned his boat down because of flare ups.

In fall/winter Pacific NW, I find alcohol to be not hot enough fuel. Alocohol gel or Sterno is light, cheap, convenient, but when the weather is cycling above and below freezing with at least some wind, boiling water is a challenge. The lightest weight effective carried fuel for me is a toss up between iso-butane cartidges and trioxane tabs. Of course, I love burning dry wood, but the forests alternate between Black Flag fire danger and soaking wet, depending on the season. Then, there is Altitude, making my cartridges work worse, making Naptha-White Gas the SubAlpine Winner in colder seasons. MSR XGK is a high btu torch pointing up. Not light weight, cheap, or compact. Thanks for the hints and strategy for being sneaky, older and still having fun.

I'm also in the NW Pacific and usually utilize Butane/Propane mix. Pure alcohol stoves REQUIRE a good windscreen where I am. Without something to hold the heat to the pot (keep it from being blown away), I can't get hot water -- even after 30 minutes. That's why I liked Blackie's use of the canteen cup stove with an alcohol fuel.

Im playinv with a stainless steel wool insert , the trangia actually has a tall flat wick in it some chicom clones dont , if u clog those holes in bottom it wont feed right i cant get mine to bloom yet but ill get it 🥸

I'm practical like you, I got a swiss m3777 military surplus stove, why pay all that for a alcohol stove. Used it till it ran dry, then used ita as alcohol stove ,soots pot pretty good, but works. Use isopropyl 90 percent alcohol. So lesson here is , if I cleaned it out used it as alcohol stove would it soot up pot ?? If it works leave it alone, or you might need to buy a new one.!!! Lessons from a 50yr old woodsmen, also get a lasky standerd sharpening system, red box with stones and jig. Can sharpen razor blade sharp in 20 min. Use 30wt mother oil instead of linseed oil, it stinks. Get a saphire polishing stone for it, essential to finish sharpening.will not regret that $16. And kiss, keep it simple stupid. Wish I did that years ago.

👍 Yes, it's so bad to watch what's being sold as bushcraft on KZbin. People drive their cars into the forest, walk 300-500 meter into it, build their setup, making illegal fire and tout the latest gear as a must-have. You absolutely must have this new burner, cooker, the new fancy waterbottle or what ever. Without you are not a real bushcrafter. You're right, that's camping, car camping or sometimes a real cooking show, but not bushcraft. Bushcraft is about getting as far as possible with little stuff that is multi-purpose.

The problem with cooking food in cans or in their retort pouch is that the insides are lined in plastic, which will leach chemicals into the food, and the outsides tend to use polymer wrappers for the labels instead of paper (and retort pouches are polymer n the outside, leaching chemicals into the water you'd then want to make your soup/drink with.

One thing I disagree with. Your not suppose to use the rubber O ring to snuff out the flame, it'll melt it. Use the simmer ring and don't tighten down the lid till burner cools.

my camera will not use a external mike plus with my heart problem anything on my chest will hear the THUMP THUMP THUMP of my heart often if you watch close you will see my shirt pocket jump from time to time so a chest mike just aint in the cards right now hopefully i will save up enough to up grade to a better camera..till then i am sorry if you cannot hear me i am doing my best
