I think Blackie can teach an entire merit badge course in "Hammock". Complete with 14 hours of instruction. Haha. Thanks for the clear explanations of .. issues that we don't have to learn the hard way. I like the barrel concept. Seems like I'm always loosing the right hunting clothing between seasons. Makes it hard to pack and get out of the house. If you have a system for that , I'm all ears.

They sell backpack straps designed specifically to carry 5 and 7 gallon buckets and even larger barrels like shown in this video. They are 25 to 30 dollars on Amazon. A backpack rigging and a barrel is a great way to portage lighter but bulkier items, especially if you are into canoeing.

Great informative video Blackie! At 67, I may be called a "silver" wolf, but reality I am more of a "bald" eagle 😘 A four wheeled garden cart is what I use and is great for transporting gear. A Warbonnet Blackbird XLC hammock is my primary shelter; a couple of additional tips: A double bottom will provide more protection from mosquitoes AND is great for putting an air mattress or foam pad. The onewind bottom quilt protector is a great product!

I'm a silver wolf too. I really liked your video. My problem is have ing 2 trees to tie to where I wish to camp. You was telling about the 5Ws. Something some of may have missed. Myself and a friend camped in the same spot 5-6 times until I just happened to look up. Now it wasn't what you might think I saw that scared us off to never camp there again. Let me describe the camp site. The camp site was level ground around a huge oak tree about 30 inches in diameter. From the oak tree about 20 feet was a babbling brook The bank Dropped off about 8 foot deep strait down to the waters edge n the brook. Near water is good right an no charge $ its free. The problem was this babbling brook was between 2 mountains. Now what I saw when I looked up at that tree. As I said that was a huge tree. The lowest limb as about 3 inches in diameter and about 10 feet over my head. On that lowest limb was a wad of grass - branchesc and trash wraped around it like water would leave. At some time earlier between our camps water had been 10 feet deep right where I was standing. Needless to say we broke camp n drove to the nearest camp site that we had to pay 12$ per day.

I do like the barrel idea. I also think that the tarp should be in your cargo pocket so you can set up a shelter before you open the barrel to the weather. If your of the opinion that if it is raining, you wait in the car until it stops, that's one way of doing it I guess. There is also a good sealing bucket lid for a 5,6, or even larger buckets. They have plastic pet food containers that are as big as your barrel, but the plastic is a little thinner.

Tuned out at the positioning of the tree straps. Discounting friction on the bark, the only position which won't slip sideways is the strap centered, 3 leads coming together at equal angles and equal tension.

Hammock camping is the only way I roll now, I use a camonest hammock full surround bug net, thermarest air mat inside the hammock, and usually an unzipped sleeping bag, I use a 10 x 13 aqua quest camo tarp, rigged with dutch wear bling and at the end of my hammock I have a continuous loop made from amsteel, my ridgeline is zing it, and it is all set up with dutchware bling for fast set up, I think I can set up a hammock faster than a tent these days, love the big tarp for cooking under or hanging out under in big rain. In colder temps I have been using the heliconcon tex swagman roll as an underquilt. but I have had my eye on the one wind under guilt and blanket.

I would like to suggest you might recommend a piece of dowel about 1inch in diameter and a board long enough to stand with your feet shoulders with apart and as deep as your feet and use it like a kind of balance board w. Use it every day as you can balance easily then split a 2x4 length making it about 2 inches wide, then round over the edges and start balancing on that

When I go camping, I always load my pack with the first thing out is my rain gear. Next comes my tarp, if it's raining, I can set up the tarp to keep everything else dry. Next comes my shelter so I can use the tarp as shelter to set up my shelter. If I am using a hammock, I will set up the tarp as a hammock tarp, If I am using a tent, the tarp will let me set up the tent under it to keep the inside dry. The last thing to come out is my sleeping clothes. Somewhere in the middle is my food, cook pot, and anything else i may need for eating drinking or relaxing for the evening. If it is dry out, I still do things in this order as a matter of practice. If I had a barrel for hauling my stuff, I would load it the same way. First thing out is rain gear, then my tarp. I really hate having to dry things out if I don't have to. Also you can sleep much better if your sleeping gear is dry when you want to go to bed. Also I would not want a tarp smaller than a 10 x 10, bigger is better but too big is a problem. There is a guy that lives in Minnesota that has a video of him sleeping in a hammock at -40 F.

I have a harness for the same type of bear proof barrel that I use for a pack. It's made for canoeing, but I use it for camping. I strap on extra pouches and attach a 'cowboy roll" with a tarp, quick deploy Ridgeline and some thermal undies and wool socks. It's not the most comfortable pack to tote, but everything in it stays dry. It also works well to store water at camp or to use gathering materials from the landscape. I love it!
