Awesome video. I have been considering this upgrade on my 01’ 1500hd and wondered if the 14 bolt full float was a direct swap with the 14 bolt semi float. Now I know.
@JoeJackTX13 жыл бұрын
This answered every question I had. I couldnt find hardly anything on this swap on forums. everyone upgrades their 10 bolt, and 12 bolts, but hardly any info on going from 9.5 to 10.5. Thanks for this video

Glad it helped someone! Don't know if I mentioned it in the video, but double check the yoke size, if they're different, you can swap yokes, or get an adapter u joint. Itll either be a 1350 yoke, or a 1410, (1410 is wider cap to cap), if so, the u joint you'll need is 2-1435. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@EventuallyPrettyGood yeah I discovered that today. I had to order a conversion u joint and had to get longer u bolts.

Awesome swap. But I'm confused. What year truck did the 14 bolt axle come from. I have 3 Chevrolet duallys 1998, 2002 & 2004. only the 1998 (GMT400) came with a 14 bolt rear drum brakes. The other two are (GMT 800) Duramax's and they appear to be 11.5 inch American Axle & Manufacturing. with disk brakes I'd appreciate your input.
@EventuallyPrettyGood2 жыл бұрын
I believe this one was a 98 or 99, all the others in the yard were the govlock g80? I think. From what I've read the 14 bolt with drum and 14 bolt with discs are completely different, but I swear I've seen the same pinion support on them. Everyone online says no interchangeability between them. I believe only the gasser 1 tons came with the aam 14 bolt, dmax got 11.5, non HD trucks got a 9.5 semi float like my factory unit. Also not sure if the 10.5 14 bolt came in dually applications, if so would still only be gas models. So finding a disc 10.5 14 bolt full floater limits you to 6.0 2500hd trucks, iirc 8.1 vortec trucks also got 11.5. I got frustrated reading forums trying to figure out what had it, went to lkq and looked until I got lucky lol

@@EventuallyPrettyGood Thanks for the reply. My 1998 dually is a GMT 400 and a 1999 3500 dually was still a GMT400, while a 1999 1500 and maybe a 2500 was a GMT800 body style with disk brakes on the rear. I just ordered a rear disk brake conversion kit for my GMT400 dually for $1100 + $245 shipping, should be here tomorrow. The GMT800's with 4 wheel disk brake sure do stop better.

What was the total price of everything for the axle? It looks damn good id like to see what I can do bout getting me the same rear end.
@EventuallyPrettyGood3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, basic cost breakdown is Junk yard axle- $200 Yukon duragrip lsd - $400 Dana 3.42 ring and pinion - $140 Diff master rebuild kit -$330 Crush sleeve eliminator - $100 Wheel studs and hub gaskets - $80 Hub bearings - $80 Diff cover -$142 Pre bent Stainless brake lines $80 (every line on truck) Braided brake lines - $80 (all 5) Powerstop brake kit - $260 Hope this helps! Been a while so kinda foggy on some prices, but I remember all said and done it was close to 1800-1900, but you can do it a lot cheaper skipping the extras (brake kit, diff cover, lsd, eliminator etc.) All bearings were from east coast gear supply, all Timken bearings and aam seals (good oem stuff). Few things to note, few different size wheel studs, 2 different size pinion seals, and 2 Diffs (for short or tall gears) so make sure to order the right stuff. But the 14 bolt is one of the easiest axles to build! Hope this helps!

Technically you should never reuse U bolts because they stretch!! Still a great swap done right except that.

…if i use a longer gear rear axle how do i know what to use up front in order to not jack up my 4x4??
@EventuallyPrettyGood3 жыл бұрын
The same ratio as the rear as long as tire size is the same.. But make sure you use a ratio that is available for the front before you pull the trigger on anything, not every ratio is made for every axle..

@@cmink28 Lol You're good buddy. Long story short tho, bought this truck young and dumb, terrible deal on it, etc. In it way too deep to ever sell. So just making it nice where it counts and work it for years to come! As I said in the video it had a bent shaft and unsafe (I pull my trailer a lot with it). The only full floater axle I found at pick n pull needed rebuilt so I said screw it. Plus with the gear change it's halfway paid for itself in fuel savings the past year. Thanks for the watch and feedback tho, glad to hear!

What did you pay for the axle?
@EventuallyPrettyGood Жыл бұрын
Roughly 1800, including all parts and core from lkq, also includes extras like the brake kit, diff cover, limited slip and crush sleeve eliminator. Skipping the bells and whistles closer to 1200. But that's new gears, oem seals, bearings, studs etc.

How does it handle the snow after the swap?

Still a single cab long bed, so never amazing, but much better if there's weight in the bed. When you wanna have fun it's basically a formula drift car lol Great mpg, better in snow and ice, definitely a nice upgrade
