Sorry about the poor audio in places. This video is an instructional video on how to install the factory style steering wheel audio controls onto your 1999 to 2002 Silverado or Sierra (could be a Tahoe/Yukon also).

Good video, I have been thinking about adding this to my truck. I have come across these controls a couple times in some blazer and the parts yard. I may have to try this out.

If you grab the whole wheel with bezel and the clockspring you are pretty much good to go. Junkyard surfers will definitely have a better time of finding these, the wheel with buttons still pop up on ebay, but finding the clockspring would likely be much harder online.

I've been sitting on this 90% edited video for a couple years now.. finally finished and uploaded. That gives plenty of time to give a review on how it turned out. Still working some years later. Only recently have the buttons started to stop responding to pushes but it happens randomly. I'm pretty sure the wire I inserted into the back of the head unit is probably loose and loses contact now since I drive on terribly rough roads every day and everything shakes all the time. With a proper connection there I'm sure it would be good to go. The lights for the buttons never did work with power applied, so I expect they may be burned out since I bought these parts used. Also check the video description for other videos I posted. There is a way to install the newer style wheels (2003-2006 style) onto these trucks which may be a better way to go since the clocksprings and buttons for this style of wheel are rare and no longer produced.

So that one wire going to the back of the radio does all of the different functions? Very cool. Does the 2003+ use the same green wire to send the signal?
@silentbravo
@silentbravo 2 жыл бұрын
@@MoneyManHolmes You probably already figured this out... but I'm not sure about the 03+, they changed a lot of the wiring starting in 03. For a lot of electrical functions you have to keep within the same years block, so 2000-2002 are typically the same, and 03-06 are the same.
@MoneyManHolmes
@MoneyManHolmes 2 жыл бұрын
And yeah, the wiring is all different, but if steering wheel radio controls use a single signal wire, then I think there’s a slight chance it could work. Especially since aftermarket radios can easily be adapted to work with them.

Where did you get the wires for the steering wheel controls and are you going to do a video about the cruise
@silentbravo
@silentbravo 3 жыл бұрын
The extra wires for the steering wheel controls are part of the clock spring. You have to get the specific clock spring that goes to steering wheel controls. It has the 4 extra wires attached to it. With a factory setup those 4 wires end with a connector that must attach to a radio (head unit) subharness up behind the HU. My radio didn't have that harness pigtail anywhere, so I had to connect them all myself, and only 1 (green wire) goes into the head unit anyway. Not going to do cruise control switch install video, there has to be several of those already out there. Probably how I learned how to put mine in.. haha

How hard would it be to make this work on a base model with a aftermarket screen double din radio?
@silentbravo
@silentbravo 2 жыл бұрын
If you are changing the headunit it shouldn't matter what trim your truck has. It should be possible for these to work with a new screen, but you will have to get an adapter harness that will "interpret" the steering wheel controls to your new head unit. I think PAC makes a basic programmable SWC (steering wheel control) adapter box, Metra might have one, and the best one is probably from iDatalink (Maestro). So there are options, but I don't know the specific compatibility with these controls.

@silentbravo
@silentbravo 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes these almost certainly came in the early year Cadillac's, possibly even the cars. I think you may also look at GMC Envoy's some of them had high trim packages, possibly named Denali as well and could have come with these. Although I'm not sure when the Envoy started production I saw some of them had similar steering wheels in pictures.

What is the other wiring harness for in the radio cavity?
@silentbravo
@silentbravo 2 жыл бұрын
Both harnesses go to the factory head unit. One harness has all the speaker channels and other functions for basic radio operation, and the other harness is for an auxiliary source, which was a cassette tape player in my truck, but could also be a cd player I think in some configurations from factory.

awesome video. wiring a little different on my 99. hoping to connect the factory SWC to aftermarket interface. @19:40, the 99 service manual has #6 and #7 phrased differently than your image. #6 - PPL/WHT - 1382 - "led dimming signal" ... #7 - GRY - 8 - "Instrument Panel Lamp Feed". I am assuming and intenting to connect the GRY/BLK wire from SWC plug to #7/GRY

Can this same process work if I use a steering wheel with integrated controls like from a cat eye truck?
@silentbravo
@silentbravo 11 ай бұрын
I'm not sure but I think the wiring may be the same or similar. It's really about the clockspring and from 03 and up they switched to CANBUS style communication for a lot of the electrical, so 02 and older isn't compatible for many things. If the newer style wheel and clockspring have the same 4 wires, then I would expect it would work.

Yo man quick question where did you find that clock spring with the 4 way connection and audio buttons because my truck has the audio buttons and the four way connection but I can't find it for my make and year model I drive a 2002 gmc sierra denali 1500 regular and no one has it not the dealership not oreilys not auto zone or nappa plus advanced auto parts doesnt have it and it's all original to so I dont get it by any chance do you have the part number or where did find it because I looked everywhere and some of the Cadillac escalades have them but no luck finding them I just keep getting the wrong part
@silentbravo
@silentbravo Жыл бұрын
You can only find them used, and they are rare because they were used for only a few years on limited vehicles. Setup notifications on Ebay or start looking at junkyard inventory for models that would have the parts. For the switches you can watch ebay for the whole steering wheel and have better luck finding those. The clockspring is the real unicorn. I will check later I might have a picture with part number to give you.
@silentbravo
@silentbravo Жыл бұрын
The clockspring I bought supposedly came from a Tahoe/Yukon Denali, there are 2 part numbers on it. One seems to be the generic part number: GM 26088278, and the more specific part number is this one GM 26088320. Good luck in search.

@@silentbravo thanks man and I already have those two part numbers but they still cant be found I've been searching that part number left and right and nobody and not even ebay or 3rd party websites have them plus with the junk yard its gamble because most of them already been parted out and sometimes the people at the junk yards dont care if the clock spring breaks by rotation when there taking off the intermediate shafts or the entire steering column but I'll check if they have it because I rather have it new then used

Not easier, you have to disassemble the column farther and replace the upper shaft inside it. There is a good video about it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6DXn3WJd5uWg9k But it may be more worthwhile since you can actually buy replacement 03+ wheels and the buttons for them. The buttons for these are factory only parts and pretty rare anymore.

Im currently doing this. the rear steering shroud can be found in black in the mid size 99-05 jimmys/blazers/bravada, instead of chopping up the back to make the buttons fit. Anyway, ive been having quite the trouble getting these buttons working with a sony head unit, ive tried with and without a pac, Verified that all the buttons get voltage and drop voltage on the data wire when depressed. The sony xav-ax5600 isnt registering the programming when i go to program them in the head unit. Probably going to have to have a pro look at it
@silentbravo
@silentbravo Жыл бұрын
Yeah those models shared the same wheel, but probably also rare for them to have had the steering wheel controls too. I would think the PAC would get you going there, maybe look into the iDatalink Maestro products if your head unit is compatible. I think those are the top of the line adapters.
