I've literally never had an issue with tapcons... Other than them being pricey but they work perfect for mounting stuff to concrete! Especially if you ever want to remove whatever it is you mounted! 👍
@drphibesrises4 жыл бұрын
I have used Tapcons with success. The key is the correct (smaller hole) than the fastener. Care must be used to not over torque the screw as you can strip the hole. Tapcons are easy to remove. I like hammer nails because it is more forgiving for a novice. I like to use hammer nails for applications where I want more security since they are more difficult to remove as compared to the Tapcons. Each has their uses. Thanks for the vid. I wish I had a helper for my projects like you😁.

Blue screws are perfect, like anything else you have to have the right size bit, if you use these hit it fasteners in hollow blocks you will have to purchase the very short ones as they spread only on the tips and then you will have a problem with depth to hold your shelf, to be straight it has nothing to do with which one is better but really what each one was designed for, for the sake of the video being entertaining i understand saying one is better but you know !

To refinance my house, I needed to strap down three water heaters in my basement. First, I tried using Tapcons. I got one to work, then four that wouldn't screw in more than half way. Tapcons weren't going to work. Then I tried those screws with plastic sleeves you push in first, same problem. Then I tried these and it was so much easier (on some I had to hammer in the sleeve before the nail). What I'm saying is, thank your for this video.

I'll stick with Tapcons. I have been using Tapcons for decades. They work great. I have never had any issues with Tapcons, and they are easily removable if/when necessary. The important rules to remember for Tapcons are: 1) The hole needs to be drilled 1/16" to 1/8" diameter smaller than the Tapcon (depending on the concrete material) in order to give the threads some concrete to cut into. 2) The hole needs to be drilled 1/2" deeper than the Tapcon is long so there is room for the dust to go. 3) Always blow or suck out the concrete dust from the hole before installing the Tapcon. 4) Tapcons should be driven a minimum of 1" deep into concrete to ensure holding strength, and a maximum of 1-3/4" inches deep so that the Tapcon does not over-tighten and break off. 5) Never over-torque Tapcons. This will cause them to strip in the concrete, and they won't hold. The slower you turn the Tapcon, the better it will cut threads and hold in the concrete. 6) If you need super holding power in concrete, skip the Tapcons and use wedge anchors. Stick to these rules and Tapcons will (almost) never fail you.🙂

They can be removed with a chisel to shear off the head but I completely agree that these are bets suited for no-fail items, things hanging next to your car or in areas that you want a totally secure connection. Love your videos and, you're right, those anchors are solid. But now you need another vidoe- how to remove the anchors. What if you need to remove or reposition? Even with their faults, those other anchors can be removed and patched. At least a word of warning might have been in order. Other than that, I like the clarity of your videos.
@SilverCymbal4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Use these for things that you can't afford to fall down or fail. Especially brackets next to fancy cars that people forget can be ruined by hooks letting go or shelves collapsing. I use every bit of my wall space in my garage and had other anchors fail. These are ideal for that. If you need to remove them, its easily done with a grinder or more simply with a chisel and a swift hammer tap will shear the head off

@josephdisandro94834 жыл бұрын
Yeh they are strong but the problem is, they are forever. Once you bang it in, you can't move them unlike backing out a screw in an anchor. I don't have a problem with a lead anchor and screw. Very reliable and a lot cheaper.
@SilverCymbal4 жыл бұрын
They can be forever and the strength will beat most screw anchors in my experience. But they can be easily removed if needed. Use a small chisel the the head can be sheared right off if needed.

SC - how would you go about removing these? I'm in a new house and the previous owner put up a bunch of stuff in the basement with these exact nails. I need them out and have no idea where to get started.
@SilverCymbal3 жыл бұрын
You have a couple of options. You can use an angle grinder and grind the head off, this is kind of messy and you might not have a grinder. My other method is to use a chisel, you can use a scrap wood one or preferably buy a punch with a chisel head. WEAR safety glasses, or face protection. I have sheared the heads off hitting it with a hammer. The nail in the center won't usually split you can usually pull it out with pliers. You cant remove the part in the wall easily but you could patch over it or at least the wall is flat.

Go out and buy a sleeve anchor, and do a video on them. You will never go back and use these ones. if you do still prefer these ones there are plastic ones with a screw in the middle so they are removable Hilti makes them I used them and they are very strong. Also the plastic anchors you have bad luck with maybe because there are 2 types. One type is for brick the other for concrete. The one you pictured in this video is for brick not concrete.

These are meant to be permanent like nails but the weakness I have found that allows removal is using a scrap chisel or hardened chisel, wearing eye protection, etc. Give them a hit at the base under the mushroom head. That metal is softerhammer around it until the head is loose and at that point the nail can be pulled out with a prybar, hammer fork, etc.
