In this video I talk about junk silver and why it is one of the best types of silver for silver stacking. I have been buying junk silver for many years and I feel as though I still want more junk silver in my silver stack. If you are wondering what junk silver is then this is the video for you. Junk silver is US Mint half dollars, quarters, and dimes that are from 1964 or older. $1 Face Value (circulated) of junk silver = .715 Troy Ounces and $1.40 Face Value = about 1 Troy Ounce. When you are calculating prices $1 of junk silver face value can be any combination of coins. When looking at junk silver vs bullion it is clear that junk silver can be harder to price and buy. Hi SD! I visited a local Coin shop Saturday, and was talking about junk silver. He had never heard the story about how, in 1964, a 1964 quarter would buy a gallon of gas, about 20-25 cents at the time. If you had a 1964 quarter today, you could sell it at the LCS and take the cash and buy a gallon of gas... He got it before I finished the story 'cause he understands the value of real money, and it's value over time...

From my recollection as a kid coin collector, dealers started coining the term "junk silver" to refer to coins that had no numismatic value. They would put them in a "junk" pile, and sell them for the melt value of silver. It had nothing to do with the composition. Maybe that definition came later?

I think what we are going to find moving forward is Junk is going to draw higher and higher premiums as scarcity increases. Where as they make rounds, Eagles, Maples, Brits, etc, etc, etc every year. No more pre 64 coinage will ever be made.

It is EASY for people to use the Bible out of context, VERY EASY. HAVE to READ the two verses before it that says, James 5:1, 2 "Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. It is in regards to "Rich Oppressors" and their Judgment. GOD is judging their wealth as being CORRUPTED for their [bad] treatment of others. This is not a judgment on owning or having gold and silver. That being said, GOD is also saying, be careful that your FAITH IS NOT in gold or silver or putting it above GOD. It was currency then as it is now. Their is NO judgment in owning it and using it. One more thing, if you are HOARDING IT, there is also judgment in that. As we are told in the parabells. If you are NOT tithing, their is judgement in that, etc... Their is WISDOM in owning gold and silver. But we gotta be careful and check our heart. Be Blessed and Be Vigilant ☝️💯

I love junk silver and have accumulated quite a bit.... but the current premiums are crazy! ASE are even worse. Britannias, Maples, and Krugerrands are reasonable in my mind if you can find a deal on them. I bounce from dealer to dealer to shop.

Fractional silver rounds, coins and bullion in the past had a higher premium. Then, that found on consitutional silver. Its good to have to get your weight closer to actual trade value. That way your not over paying on each trade. I only have 50 mercury dimes. Now that demand for consitutional silver has significantly increased. I would be hesitant on buying more of it, and instead would stick with three nines fine.

Unfortunately junk silver premiums are so high right now that it makes no sense. Finding rounds with better premiums is much easier. I would NOT tell a new stacker to stack junk. I agree that having a small amount makes sense.

Local coin shop is selling 90% at 24X face value. He is the only shop in town with any left. I noticed you left out silver dollars which seems to have a different pricing scale than the 90% dimes, quarters and halves.

Silver dollars don't follow the same proportional silver weight as do dimes, quarters, and halves. Dollars are always a bit higher.

Morgans and Peace dollars have .77 and change of an ozt so they get priced differently. My LCS had them at $28 before the pop in price. Would imagine they are higher now.

I really like junk silver. US Constitutional is great but I like all junk silver. Early British, Canadian and Australian is sterling .925 and I like the crowns, half crowns, florins, shillings, sixpence and Threepence coins. I try to stay away from anything less than 80% but I do make some exceptions if it's one of the types I collect but I don't look for anything less than 50% silver. At that point the premiums coupled with the sheer weight of coinage and only half of it silver is a burden so I pass on the war nickels and the 40% halves.

They also don't mint them anymore. Generally when this happens it also can take the price up as well depending on how old they are with the condition of which the coin is in holds a lot of value as well. Not just the silver side but also to the collectors. Just food for thought.

What do you think of 90% silver ATB, State, and Territory quarters? In some corners they can't seem to get any love, but to me they are as good, if not better, then pre-1965 quarters. They are 90% silver, have virtually no wear, and were produced in a set number so no more will be made. But some stackers don'tr want them, and some big online dealers like JM Bullion, don't want them. I don't get it.

1965 thru 1970 half dollars were also Sandwich coins, with 80% on the outside and much less on the inside, to equal 40% silver in its entirety. You really need to talk to someone from that era to get it all right.
