the quickest and easiest way to check sliver content is to drop the coin on a hard surface. silver has a beautiful ring to it. sandwich coins are very dull sounding, fakes will likely sound dull too, or at least have a different ring different kind of ring than the sound of real silver. it's why the Christmas song of that name is about silver bells...they ring beautifully. it truly is a precious metal... i never checked the 40% halves to see what they sounded like.

Ok, scientist here. This doesn't destroy the coin, it only destroys the collector's value of the coin. The acid etches into the metal (the longer you leave the solution on the coin, the more it will etch), so this will eat a very small portion of the silver, but it is on the order of one milligram (1/1000 gram). The reason for the color change - you are testing for the presence of copper or nickel. This will not work if you suspect that a silver bar has been adulterated with tungsten rods, the only way to test for that is to saw it open. This only tests for a copper content in the *outer layer* of the coin. When the nitric acid component of the solution contacts copper it turns blue. Nickel plated coins will also turn green/blue. However, if the coin is a copper alloy *plated with silver*, the solution may indicate falsely that the coin is silver when in fact it is just the outer layer.
@boblindstrom34795 жыл бұрын
A neodymium magnet will test tungsten filled silver or gold bars. Non invasive and no chemicals or sawing required.

"Ok, scientist here" and then proceeding giving the most obvious and simple fact ever, correcting something that has never been claimed (he clearly mentioned the "VALUE" of the coin) is both arrogant and low iq.

fakes are often sold at swap meets, coin shows hosted by unscrupulous dealers, traveling coin shows at motels/hotels, and through the mail, to people who want silver content but are not savvy about metals counterfeiting.
@damok999910 жыл бұрын
Fakes are made to have numismatic value. That is collector value, like a low mintage date worth x10 the price. The numismatic coin world consists of all types of metals but silver is highly faked nowadays since $ won't buy you as much metal. Thats right the metal isn't worth more your money is worth less.

@TheAlexagius And you stated it, Sterling is 92.5% Ag & 7.5% Base Metals. Most the time they use Copper as the base metal, but Nickel can be used as well. And for that matter, a lot of people confuse diamagnetism with magnetism. Silver can be Diamagnetic, as in it repels magnets. If you truly believe all silver isnt magnetic please contact me and sell me all your magnetic silver. Be happy to buy it thru paypal.

@bobmetelsky another point, you never want to "abraid" or "rub" the edge of a valuable coin on any testing stone or test surface, THIS WILL REDUCE OR DESTROY the value of a collectible Coin, the rim of a coin is inspected carefully as part of the numismatic Grading process any rubs or abrasions will relegate the coin to the "Damaged" category. if you are unsure about the authenticity of a Rare coin, take it to a PROFESSIONAL for evaluation.

The blue-green color is copper sulfate created by the acid attacking the base metal which most likely is a non-ferrous copper-based alloy. Typical brass or "cartridge brass" is 60% copper, 40% zinc, so when you attack it with acid, especially sulfuric, it leaches out the copper, given the blue-green color. It's cheaper than 100% copper as well. The counter-fitter's most likely use copper-based alloys because they are more malleable when stamping and non-magnetic.

so acid test only for what you think is junk silver, what about coins that might have collector value, how you test them in way that does not damage them?

Doesn't make no sense! Why should I use acid to find out if I'm buying authentic coin or not if it's going to destroy it?, and how to find out without doing so. I do buy coins from state auctions and else where, do you think they will let everyone to use acid to check on the authenticity. I have seen some of the buyers using scales, but the rest of the buyers like myself are just bidding to their limits. Really the acid test is not helpful......

I would also like to point out that if you know what silver looks like, you can identify the high purity silver without question, not to mention, these coins sound very differently when dropped on a desk. Silver has a specific look, nothing else looks quite like it.

The Kennedy half is 80% silver on the outer layers, 40% is the total including the core (80/20 silver/copper outer layers, and 21/79 core). It's clad just the same as copper clad coins, but all 3 layers are silver colored. You can see the layers on the edge of a coin in good condition.

Hey guy I just bought a 24 gram sterling silver ring (lion head) from eBay. Stamped 925. But i noticed a blue ring on my hand. So i went and bought a JSP silver acid test. No stone. So I filed it with a small knife and dropped some of that acid, and it turned the ring creamy white where the acid fell (in the loop part) so i dont ruin the lion head incase it was real. I assume its real sterling, because it didnt turn green. Turned part of the inside of my ring creamy white. Does that mean its real?

don't you have to file a bit first so you don't risk the chance of a false positive? also I am asthmatic would that affect me in that regard?

A magnet can be used in conjunction with a ping test and a weight test and s measurement test. You just use a a small rare earth magnet. Hold the ciin on an angle more than 45 degrees. Place the magnet at the top and let it slide down. If you see the magnet trickle down its a good sign (but just this test by itself). Silver is diamagnetic meaning on movement you get a repelling action.
