Upstream Nymphing - Filmed on the beat that Frank Sawyer Keepered

Oliver Edwards ‪@LearnFlyFishing‬ gives a masterclass in this style of nymph fishing. This style was made famous by Frank Sawyer, who also devised both the Pheasant Tail Nymph and the Killer Bug. In this video, Oliver fishes the stretch on the Upper Avon where Frank Sawyer used to work as Keeper. The red sighter is just the braided sleeve on the end of the fly line. Oliver always referred to them as his minicon. Minicon is a brand of braided sleeves made by Roman Moser, it was the brand Oliver used. They're widely available. They are usually sold without any colour, just clear nylon, but sometimes they are sold with a coloured sleeve - he did not use those. He always used a red marker pen (permanent & waterproof ink) to make them red. Any braided sleeve will do, as long as you can get it to take colour from your marker pen.

Most of the flylines comes with a welded loop to connect the leader , I was thinking of using a red marker on the flyline instead of putting on a braided sleeve

No, just add the red marker pen to the braided loop that you use to connect your fly line tippets. I know that somewhere in the many pockets of that fishing waistcoat would be a red marker pen in case it had faded a little. Sorry, my answer is not that exciting, but Oliver always went for the simple, cheap, straightforward solution as any good Yorkshireman would!
