The story behind the “shin plasters” that you heard is partially true. Yes you could hide them in your sock. But during the war they used to pay the solders in these 25 cent notes. On the cold wet nights, the solders used to stuff these into their boots to keep them warm, they had no use for the money on the battlefield. The water used to turn it into a plaster material. Thus the name.

North Korean notes are widely available in Turkey (where I am living). I have seen people buying and selling them often (not American citizens). The specimin ones are also easy to find. There must be someone bringing them from North Korea in big quantities, because they are everywhere.

The Canadian 1967 date only bills are actually collected by some collectors by the different plate numbers found on the face and back.In the Canadian 1937 issue these bills were issued with three different signature combinations, with the Osborne /Towers signature being the scarcest and most valuable because they had a lower quantity printed before they switched over to the Gordon /Towers signature. In the Coyne/Towers issue the O/M prefix commands a slight premium because it was the crossover prefix from when they discontinued the Gordon/Towers signature, which also carries a slight premium in the O/M prefix.

11:13 this is called a plate block. The 4 stamps are at the corner of the sheet, and the number is on the side. Most of the time people just break up all of the stamps to put on envelopes (unless they collect stamps). These might be worth more than face value to people who collect plate blocks edit: the stamps themselves might be worth more than face value too but I am not sure.

It's still quite common to get £1 banknotes in Scotland in your change. I have one myself from a few months ago. Depends on which bank the notes are printed from. Danske Bank in NI have them too but they're very rare and people don't really use them. Bank of England got rid of £1 notes in the 80s and I'm pretty sure England just uses one single design and bank of notes. While not sterling, Isle of Man £1 notes are also still in everyday use.

Mongolia was a puppet state as the Mongolian People's Republic from 1921-1992. While yes it was independent, it was largely used as a breadbasket and resource wing by the USSR, who had troops stationed there as well. It was used as a buffer with China especially when the Sino-Soviet split happened, effectively as a barganing chip in case the Chinese ever wanted to reabsorb Mongolia. The only reason it never became a true SSR was because Moscow flat out told them no six times when PM Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal asked.

hey silverpicker, I spent time in Korea in 2018, and went to the DMC. I believe the notes you have are the tourist dollars that can be used and spent by foreigners in the North because I bought the same notes at the DMZ. from what I understand is the North Koreans value the currency as the same value as the South Korean Won. Keeping in mind North Korean Won is not traded on the open market. In my home town of Vancouver Canada, I was able to buy North Korean currency from a gentleman who I met from a friend. The bills he showed me feature the Kim family and are 5000 and 10000 won.

13:02 the smaller 5 KPW note is actually printed in 1998. what's more interesting about it is that there was a note with that same design that was printed in 1992, and the human faces look much better in the 1992 version than in the 1998 version because probably due to effects of the arduous march, they ditched the intaglio style printing and just used litho printing on the entire note, which made the faces look cartoonish

@@Silverpicker Specimens are produced for a number of reason, mainly to help international banking institutions identify new designs of banknotes. However, some central banks give specimen notes as gifts to statesman, bank officials or auction them off to collectors. However, I believe the DPRK takes it a step further and just prints specimens just as tourist trinkets. The odd thing is, as you say, the regular currency can be obtained quite easily too.

The note at 13:30 depicts a hydroelectric plant as it is a prominent part of the DPRK's national emblem. I don't know why for certain it's on their national emblem, but it likely has to do something with the importance of industry and how close the hydroelectric plant (on the national emblem) is to Mount Paektu, which is an important cultural landmark in both Koreas. Also, the note at 13:14 I does not depict Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. I don't remember who the figures on the note are but if I remember correctly one of them made a significant scientific discovery (?). I don't think any other leader than Kim Il Sung has been on a banknote, to my knowledge.

I've got to say, the new U.S. currency notes are certainly a step, or three, down in the artistry department. The traditional notes they replaced were of much, much higher design value. Our olders coinage from the latter quarter of the 19th century and first third of the 20th were often strikingly beautiful. Morgan & Liberty Dollars, Mercury dimes, Indian pennies and more were functional works of art. The modern mint had an opportunity to make some real artistic upgrades with the State, and then parks & landmarks quarters, but almost all of projects were wasted on 'Designs by Committee.' (Or worse, states that only allowed design proposals from school children) Ugly money reflects an ugly opinion of our nation by those who design it and advocate for it. It's time for return to pride in the artistic value of our coin and currency, as well as in America herself.

Since the NK notes are uncirculated (and mine is too) I sort of wonder if they earmark some for export as a way to generate revenue and spread their propaganda. But I don't know that.

The printing on the back of the 5 won note says the same as is printed on the front of the other notes. It just says it's from the bank of the communist government of Korea...which in their view is the only legitimate Korean government as they don't recognize the South.

America destroyed most of the dams and infer-structure of N. Korea (and three million of their citizens). Re-building the dams, is probably a symbol of pride. These bombings were war crimes - btw - that N. Korea weathered.
