Based on historical prices, yes, platinum is a good buy. However, platinum doesn’t get much “love” from stackers and is in extremely low demand in my shop.

I have a healthy stack of silver, but I'm a gold guy. I don't buy from Ampex, but they do use their handy portfolio that I use religiously. Every single piece I have is in the portfolio. I have (in cash terms, not ounces) 56.54% in gold, 41.32% in silver, and 2.14% in platinum. I'm concentrating on gold right now, mostly 1/2 ounce Eagels, and every once in a while, I'll grab a 1 oz gold Maple, Eagle, or Buffalo.

By any chance are you a certified coin collector as well versus just buying bullion of different types. One thing I can say is No Matter What type of sovereign you decide on it is definitely the way to go with PMs in my opinion only.

If you dont have any gold you should get some. Its wealth. If you have gold then you should have silver for barter and for the gold silver ratio gold leads but silver rises exponentially. At 84 to 1 silver has the best upside and if you are worried about barter 90% is best just my honest opinion

Gold is great for storing great value in a small space. That’s also a disadvantage, because it’s hard to “spend” something so valuable in the event of a currency meltdown unless you’re buying a big-ticket item. You can’t readily buy a loaf of bread and a sack of beans with a gold coin because the person from whom you’re buying those things would not be able to make change for it. It’s a great idea to own a bit of both metals.

If you can afford to stack around 4 Ounces of silver a month... you can afford to stack a few grams of gold as well.

The same argument goes both ways. It is nicer to have silver if/when it comes to day-to-day purchases...but it would be nicer to have gold when making larger purchases.

One argument for gold and you would never want to do this but…..anytime I have had to fill out a net worth statement it will ask if you have any gold in your assets. If you chose to disclose it, it might help as collateral to take out loans at a financial institution or lower your interest rates. It also is accepted in IRA accounts. They may ask for other pm’s but gold is at the top of that list

I’m 60/40 gold to silver. Basically for the weight and storage capabilities. If you are saving for 20-30 years….its so much easier to realize wow….if im all silver that will be A LOT to have to move or store. So I’m currently 60/40.

I see NO ONE is really posting about the ratio of G2S about the difference between those that already have large inventories of silver are better prepared to play the ratio versus those that are just getting into PMs. It all depends on how you see value in gold or silver. Either way you are still better off than most.

Thank you for the fun debate. I enjoyed the content. The percentage question is interesting because while I don't disagree with the 70/30 gold/silver view point, the sheer amount would make me double think that when talking about a $1M purchase. You even said it at the end that about $50k with of silver is doable storage wise but once you get up over $100k, it starts causing more planning. If you do 70/30 with $1M, that's $300k worth of silver taking up a lot of space. So I would opt more for a 95/5 or 90/10 split with that amount of money. Now if you were dropping around 100-200k, then I think the 70/30 split makes more sense and as the dollar amount drops to spend, I would increase the ratio percentage of silver purchased as I too prefer silver to gold as I like to have variety of items and silver allows for that more so than gold.

The fact that the GSR just cannot drop and over years just keeps going up tells me (especially with all the industrial demand hype around silver) that the world prefers gold.

I agree. I was looking at an 100 year chart and (with some abnormalities along the way) it’s slowly climbed higher. A lot of people just assume the GSR will go down to 50:1, 20:1 etc but I don’t see any reason why it would. More likely to stay where it is or continue higher. I think Gold is the way to go long term. IF I was forced to pick one.

Everything should when I say should one more time skyrocket upwards. Things are kind of quiet right now but we know it's happening. @@chaunceyhart1346 the GSR touched 30:1 in 2011. It touched 15:1 three times last century. It will do it again in our lifetime. I stack gold for sure, but one day 20:1 is going to buy me some very cheap gold with my silver.

Paper to physical silver is 400:1 Real silver makes up of only 0.25% of the silver market. Paper silver is what decides spot price. Physical demand is what makes premium price. The GSR is paper trades. I'm not going into the whole derivative implosion thing when the asian market takes all the physical, but when it happens the GSR will tighten back to historic levels.

Great argument!!! With a million to stash, I’d go 90% gold to 10% silver. But I have 7 acres to hide it on. In real life, I have 50% in one safe deposit box, 40% in another bank safe deposit box, and my 90% silver stash close to home. Currently all my gold is in safe deposit boxes. But all my brass and lead is in my residence. Locked and loaded!!!

I would go for a 70-30 to 75-25 split…heavy on gold. It has more stability. The silver has more potential for gain or loss. All based on a high dollar investment and storage. Note: if I had a million to spend on metals, I would have enough for safe storage…just sayin

If I had a million to spend on metals, I wouldn't. Having that kind of wealth in 1 spot is dangerous. I would probably split the money in half, and focus on my families security such as where we lived and what type of tasteful physical barriers I could put in place. I could not just spend that type of money on just 1 type of safe haven. I would have to assume all my other needs were met first. The thought of having a million dollars worth of metals in my possession on the move is a scary proposition. I'd rather not have that much as long as I could protect what I had. But to answer the question, it would be a 60/40 split with gold being 40. I just think silver will be much easier to "spend" when I need the basics of life. Gold would be for property, and silver would be for living.

I'm less than a year in. My plan is to stack $5k silver as a baseline. My thoughts are continue purchasing silver over the $5k until I have enough for 1oz gold. I will then trade the required silver value for 1oz gold, keeping my baseline of $5k silver.

@@gilldavidmour4199, I understand the logic to that but it's my way of doing it. Also, I probably should have worded it better. When I've spent $5k US on silver, the next step is to spend enough on silver to trade for 1oz of gold, however much that may be. The $5k spent will be bought at different prices so it will not a true representation of the value of silver on hand. This will allow me to have some different levels of monetary value in precious metals. I'm still very new to this and don't have every nuance of stacking figured out. I'm sure through time I will change my methods.

I had someone tell me once, 'that in the end, all that matters is how many ounces you have. It's the weight that counts not what you paid for it'. That always kind of stuck with me. Good luck. In terms of cost I can buy 25 oz of silver bullion coins or about 10.8g of gold bullion coins for about the same money. The difference is I am more likely to make back the cost of the premium on gold than I will on silver. I could be waiting years or decades even for spot price to go up to cover the silver premiums to break even or maybes never.

I'm primarily a silver stacker, but I do buy an occasional fractional gold eagle. If gold wasn't so expensive, I would likely buy more gold than silver. I would argue, if your traveling outside the country, and you had to take change out of your pocket, mixing silver dollars in with regular half dollars and quarters would be less likely to catch the eye of local security than gold coins sticking out obviously.

75% Gold and 25% Silver. So if you have $10,000 , buy $2,500 worth of Silver and the rest in Gold. In the event that you run out of Silver or your Silver supply gets lower, you can always trade a couple ounces of Gold for more Silver. Trading Silver for Gold or vice versa, is only when spot price, or silver sales allow you to stack.

Not to mention that most of the gold that has been mined in history, is still on the surface of the earth in some shape or form. If I have a million dollars to spend on precious metals, I would be buying for different reasons than when buying with a couple hundred dollars. Storage concerns would also change.
