A overview of how to handle Labels / Decals in Octane C4D using Stacking
Sorry for the Typo in the video title. I am aware that its written decals not deacals :-)
I will leave that version up and life a life of shame as KZbin is not allowing the replacement of videos :p

Thanks for sharing this basic info, always good for beginners as well as a reminder for the older ones ;-) After all looking at workflows of colleagues you might stumble across something new. Like I discovered you could navigate Photoshop by pressing space somehwere between PS 6 and 7 so in late 2000. Started with 5 or 5.5 ... feeling old :P

Axismode....great tip. Thank you. I was wondering why I can´t move the texture with Cinema 4D standard. Therefore I´ve always used the UV Transform Node for this. But this is cooler ;)

would it work with hair material? I want to make rug a certain colour and put logo the same rug material but different colour

hi. thanks for this tutorial. i m having trouble with the tiling. i want a single decal but even if I uncheck tiling it keeps happening. any suggestions? thank you.

Hey and thanks for your comment. Unfortunately the C4D "Tile" checkbox is not linked with Octane. At around 1:00 Min you can see that I change the border mode of the texture to "Black Color" this is the Octane setting that prohibits tiling. Hope this helped!

Thanks for that tutorial. Is there a way to decal onto a surface that has displacement?

You would have to create your decal with a mix / blend material then pipe in the displacement in the displacement slot of the mix / blend instead of the substrate material. This approach is a bit harder as you do not have any display gizmos to show you where the decal is in 3D space. But its possible. You need to have a separate alpha channel that you would need to use as a blend factor between your substrate and your decal in the mix / blend material. Hope this helps :-)

I was losing my mind with this! I was sure it was possible to easily add decals to Octane, but I wasn't able to apply it. I was watching this tutorial just to see if I missed something when I heard "this will only work if you're not using a mix or layered material". Doh!! Mix material it was... Do you have any workaround for when using a mix material as the base material? Thanks!!

It should work with a Blend Material. You can even convert a Mix Material into a Blend Material Selecting the Mix Material then in the Live Viewer Window go to "Materials" "Convert Materials" Then use the newly created Blend Material on your Object. It will work with Decals.

Yes, it works like a charm!!! Thanks a lot. I wish it was possible to use already created material inside a blend material. But this technique woks great, I can't complain. ;)

Hi Raphael , cool tutorial - as always! THX! Do you know how to do it on a mixed material? As you mentioned, your workflow is only possible if it is a "normal" material. If you know how to do it on a mixed material or you know a tutorial about doing it on that type it would be very nice if you could help us. MANY THX! Yes correct its not possible to do it with a Mix Material with the workflow in my Video. Since the Mix material is outdated a bit you can go for another workflow. Using a Blend Material (Composit Material) will allow you to use lebals / decals. You can even convert mix materials into Blend Materials by selecting your material and then going into the Octane menu (In the Live Viewer and clicking "Materials" - "Convert Material" I hope that helps! Hey! Amazing tutorial, but im having a problem, my main material has an animatd bump map and when I apply the logo the animation freezes

That´s interesting! If you have problems with decals then probably the best way to do it is with a blend material. Its more complicated but also doable!

@@SilverwingVFX Hey! I tried a mix mtl and it worked! (Quick question, is "blend" mlt" different to mix?) The only con for mix material tho is that I can't adjust the logo and the animation independently. But in my case it came out good. Thank you!

Hi there. Mix uses any other two materials in your scene while blend is a closed system and has its material internally. You can move and project your logo in different ways within a mix or a blend material. By attaching a transform or projection node to your logo color texture and your alpha. This way you can move the logo independently from your animated surface texture. Cheers and a great Day to you!

Hey there. Not sure what you mean by that... Isn´t that what the video is describing? Add your texture to the object. In the Material that you would like as text, add an alpha channel to the opacity. Then add the text material tag over the ground material. If that´s not what you want, you may describe in more detail. Thanks.

It should. I used it on my Gameboy Project extensively! Does not work with old Mix Materials though. In that case, you can use blend (layered) materials though. It works with those.
