In this video I am explaining with examples how you would go about using the Fresnel OSL e.g. to create a clear-coat reflection layer. Google Drive link to the scene: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

Really nice, Raphael! Are you still playing with OSL? I have been looking for some way to get a parallax bump inside Octane via OSL but couldn't find any csript for it. Do you know any way to achieve it?

Very informative! Just wondering what would be a real life use of fresnel? I'm struggling to see its purpose

Hi there and thank you for your comment. So basically the Fresnel is useful for every material that has one or more clear-coat layers on top. Like car-paint, coated wood, everything wet (coated with water) and so on. For "normal" materials you have the Fresnel (Index) inside your material. As mentioned you have one coating layer in the Universal Material. So you do not need the OSL script. But if you want to make more complex materials e.g. a car paint with flakes layer & coating, you need more reflection layers then available in the universal material. Besides every other renderer has a Fresnel shader. It can come in handy more often then not. So I thought I would just write one :-) I hope this answered your question. If not feel free to mail me (address is on my website) Cheers
