Great presentation. I have found that weed control and bush-hogging can be a double edged sword. When weeds and other vegetative competition are controlled and mowed, this make the tree seedlings easily accessable & delicious snacks for deer that usually kill or seriously damage the seedling with a bite or two. When I allow nature to take it's course usually blackberries, weeds, and other vegetation will initially appear to overwhelm the seedlings but after the 2nd or 3rd year they over top the competition unscathed by wildlife and off to a good start.

Yes, that is a very valid point. Typically I recommend weed control early in the first three growing seasons. As the summer progresses, taper off on bush-hogging to allow weeds to regrow, thereby concealing the seedlings from deer antlers and chewing parts in the winter months. Sometimes allowing nature to take it's part is good; sometimes it is bad. It all depends on the weeds that are present. For instance kudzu, horse weed, and fescue competition can quickly kill young seedlings. Also, vines can severely deform them. Normal broadleaves and woodies such as briars are normally OK.

I appreciate the presentation and I learned a lot of information. I am new to managing trees. I did plant twelve acres of trees this year and look forward to more information from The Back Porch. Dr. Mercker, I didn’t see the questions on this presentation but I will keep trying.
