Some game changers here for me. The no roads only rail explains a heck of a lot about what I was experiencing! Also, I was doing the "donut" method and also had the roads going everywhere around everything as well. Replacing the hospitals and schools is a top tier tip. And it's extremely helpful to know the 2-1-1 rule. That really tightens things up a lot. And only needing one single fire station is an eye-opener. I'm definitely gonna play around with these tips! The highest population I've ever achieved is over 200k previously.

@ArchnemesisX - just wanted to followup: I got more aggressive with zoning industrials and wasting no space, and with approx 250 industrial, 250 commercial and 500 residential I was able to achieve a megalopolis with 650k population! I planned carefully, built to about 250k slowly (allowing several TOPs to form), then froze time and built the rest all at once. I unfroze time and the pop. grew steadily to 650k. Success!! Thanks for your tips.

You are most welcome! When you build your city to population 600,000 there is a special message from Dr. Wright that you don't get otherwise (you can see it at about 1:02 on my Sim City - Population 675,000 video). Best to my knowledge, there are no special messages after that.

It's definitely a great game. Saving and re-loading a city is an issue known to cause some slumming (electricity is not connected for a short time every time you rel-load the city) and that can definitely slow things down. If possible, never save and turn off the game.

The fastest way to get there that I remember was building donut blocks. A total of 8 buildings of the same type; 3 on the top and bottom and 1 on each side with an empty space in the middle; just like a square donut. I'd then fill the empty space in the middle up with a special attraction or park land

Hey man! Today I got my first Megalopolis! Got 521k and counting! Thanks for your guide! The one tip I got from you was that the pollution does not mean crap. So I went ahead and built it two columns down, and then ignored the pollution. And holy shit... I'm glad I did. The good thing is now that I got the Mario statue, but the bad thing is that I have potential 500.000+ cancer patients and since I demolished hospitals to get even more people in, they are out of luck! But thanks a million. Can finally (after 25 years) put this game to rest.

Thanks, Andrew. I never owned the game as a kid. Now as a 29 y/o I have limited time to play. One or two time a week - max. I did get a megalopolis after maybe 2 more two more attempts. Actually fixed my 465,000 pop city. It already bottomed out of course. I think I overdeveloped Industrial. But it did get me over the edge. Considering I am literally a beginner, I think I am alright!. It sure is a fun game. Next time I may try to leave whole areas undeveloped. To develop after 500K

Great question. In practice there is no difference between the two types of stadiums (much like the two different types of parks). You only need to build one, but it does increase the land value of the surrounding area, and as such, should be built among R and C zones. There is an arbitrary limit to the size your city will grow without a stadium, so it's basically just a toll booth to get to the next level.

(PART TWO) the "donut" strategy wasted space. Also, I'd use the $999,999 cheat and build the whole thing at once, then unfreeze time - and looking back I can see that that hurt my city. You might advise people to build slowly, letting new zones develop fully before building more, in order to maximize each zone. Question - is it easier to reach megalopolis by using the Freedom scenario (and suffer from no gifts) or using a good landmap (and suffer from some water)? Thanks!

Usually nuclear meltdowns don't happen in easy mode unless you're low on energy for a really long time or you've used a cheat. My advice would be start over. It can take a long time for that stuff to clear up and you have to do a lot of rebuilding.
@EpicTyphlosionTV3 жыл бұрын
Note: Schools and hospitals do have some benefit. Once you get a good number of schools, you'll get a present building (I think it's a zoo), for hospitals it's casinos. Also, they don't have zero sims in them, but it's so low that demolishing them makes sense

thanks for the video bud, really helpful, i have gotten mega once so far and trying to recreate also any pointers for reducing the effects of pollution?
@ASAndrew9 жыл бұрын
+Spoogethat Use the corners of the map to build your industrial zones. Then, cushion them with 6x6 spaces of parks (as seen in the video), and then with commercial zones. Your main concern is protecting residential - I wouldn't worry about the rest. Finally, ignore any complaints related to pollution, unless your 3:1:1 ratio is way out of balance, or you're building industrial zones in the middle of the city. It seems counter-intuitive, but Sims complain about a lot of things that never need to be fixed to build a Mega.

I lost 150,000 residents from doing that....but they started coming back. can't help but notice that you didn't mention the tax stuff. Does this means it's irrelevant? I'm trying to follow your guide but after that most of the challenge is finding money to expand, which just becomes a game of managing taxes to build stuff that cost more like stadiums and ports etc
@ASAndrew9 жыл бұрын
Jules SL Yeah, I wouldn't say it's the most comprehensive guide, and I probably could do a better job next time. With taxes, I generally don't touch it until I'm on the home stretch of Megalopolis, at which point I might reduce it to around 3%. Otherwise, it stays at 7%. The idea is to remain frugal with your infrastructure. Zones only need to have roads/rails on one side to grow. You do need a decent number of police stations, but you only need one fire station ever. This keeps costs down.
@julesnominal18049 жыл бұрын
AS Andrew thanks for quick reply! I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be any roads or rails going up and down. Any reason for that? Do they not actually need to be connected?
@ASAndrew9 жыл бұрын
Jules SL You're welcome! Yeah, they don't need to be connected at all! You can go from side to side or up and down, but there's no need to connect them both ways. You'll probably end up wasting space and make it harder for yourself to reach Megalopolis status.
@SeekerLancer6 жыл бұрын
The tax stuff is pretty irrelevant. You can bump it up to 8% but any higher and people will stop moving in. Once you've filled your map turn it down for a population explosion.

When I was a kid in the 90s, I played alot of Sim City. My brother, my dad and I tried alot to get 500,00 citizens, and earn a Mario statue. We never made it. My personal best was 360,000 citizens. This had been such a huge goal for me, and I was pissed off at my inability to complete it. In high school I played some Sim City again, but this time I didn't even bother attempting to get 500,000, because I knew I wouldn't get it. cont...

@Totorohat Supposedly that was true in the PC version of the game but no so in the SNES version.

I remember the one time I made a megalopolis. My dad was downstairs and decide he wanted to play resident evil 3. I was fairly young and I was still scared of horror games so I went into my brothers room and played this for a while and got really into it. I played for hours and somehow, as a 6 or 7 year old, I made a freaking megalopolis XD

AS Andrew That’s freaking awesome!! I studied for 3 years in college and have been 4 times, but I haven’t used it in years. Where did you live in Japan?
@ASAndrew4 жыл бұрын
@@poshko41 Takarazuka. In between Osaka and Kobe. I've visited the bottom half of Japan (and some of the top half), and while I'm bias, I would definitely say it's the best area to live in.

AS Andrew That’s where I spent most of my time! Kobe was probably my favorite city in Japan. Kansai-ben was actually easier for me to understand. Oh my god what I would give to go back and visit. I think my Japanese would come back to me pretty quickly too!

@@poshko41 I got to go in 2017. So glad I was able to do that before the lockdown. You're 100% right. Kobe is incredible.

Thanks AS Andrew! Your advice really helped out and I was able to build a megalopolis and get my beloved Mario Statue! Is it true that if you get 600,000 people you win the game?

So what is that helicopter icon for?
@Thegoodgamerpro72jdq11 ай бұрын
if the auto helicopter setting is turned off, you use the helicopter icon to center the camera onto the helicopter. i think you can only do this is a disaster is happening or if there's traffic.

The max i've gotten is 470,000 and that was recently. This game has been out forever and I'm going to try using some of the tips in this video. I'm determined to get 500,000!!!

Did it!!! :D As for the name I picked, I thought back to when I played this game at age 6 and couldn't get past town. I would've named it Yoshi, because I was into Yoshi then. So, that's my city's name ^_^

My sister recently hit a population of 1,000,000 using the overlapping technique. The SNES couldn't cope with a digit number though so it displayed 200,000 instead. Weird.
