Welcome to my Sim Racing FOV calculator video, and I'm sorry in advance that you need to endure a slideshow.
Sim Racing FOV calculators are designed for sims like Assetto Corsa. Your Sim Racing correct FOV could help make you a faster racer. Your FOV in Sim Racing will allow you to see the virtual world as you would in a proper race car. The field of view should allow you to see corner apexes from real angles and feel the sense of speed correctly. So here is your guide to get that FOV set. Thanks for watching SimRacing604!

This is just too awesome. Though I know the technical aspects of Assetto Corsa and understood logically that it is a great sim, I wasn't falling in love with it. For some reason I couldn't follow my mental lines... I thought "well, I kinda know how to guess a good theoretical line, but maybe I'm just too much of a noob to translate that to the game". Also, drifting was impossible, too much oversteering. But the most important, I wasn't feeling how fast I was going, making the game boring and screwing with my spatial awareness, and I was always braking too early or too late. Then I stumbled with some FOV tutorials, calculated my ideal FOV, made a little compromise and adjusted with how I perceive cars in real life and... eureka! What I did with the steering wheel now translated precisely to the screen, I could brake better, I could apply the drifting theory I had in my head and stopped thinking that I was too much of a klutz to enjoy racing sims. Hell, even the FFB feels more real because both the vibrations and the visual information correlate better. I feel like I've discovered fire :D

I had mine on just over 60 since I was just on a single monitor but within one session I had my time down very quickly. Although I just got the game and aren't used to using the wheel too much nor the game I think it really does make the speed feel more accurate.

Good video. Wanted to sound out on triple monitor setup. It has a LOT of possibilities depending on how you setup the arch around you. You can easily have a hFoV well over 100 with 3 screens if the game lets you define the monitor angles like iRacing. Also curved monitors can add FoV. But in a slight amount. I have a 49" 32:9 monitor and if I compare it to a flat equivalent I get 3 degrees more FoV on the curved monitor.

Just did some trig. FOV=2 times the inverse tan of (half monitor width divided by distance to eyes). So if you have 16:9 32" monitor that's 27.5" wide at 48 inches away it would be 27.5/2 then divided by 48 then you hit aTan on calculator then multiply by 2 and you get 31.96 degrees.

Actually the FOV used is the vertical one, so you should do your calculation with the height of the monitor. That way the numbers match with the video's.

then you must move the monitor closer to your eyes. Its all about your eye distance from the monitor to choose the correct fov. Most people run with monitors being even up to 2 meters away from their faces, kinda like how we would play consoles on the couch... and thats completely wrong. The key is to bring the monitor as close as you can without it disrupting your view of the steering wheel. So probably just behind it. And then set the fov correctly. It should be around 45 degrees since i have 27" aswell so you can get away with 50 or even up to 55 degrees.

Great tutorial Mike. And if you can tolerate the heavy editing, it's great alternating between race video's & (hopefully) helpful tutorials like this one. But funnily for me, it's useless on two counts. The first is that I race in bonnet view (sorry, hood view for the US), so no help there. I then changed it to 30 odd for F1/GP cars, only to find that it spoilt replays for racing channel creators, as most viewers? like to see the whole wheel anyway, to know what your doing in the car. I guess it's great that you can simply alternate between the two FOV Settings..................

Last time I did these calculations (in iRacing, not AC) the "answer" was something ridiculous like 18 degrees; I tried it for a while but it was *so* narrow I couldn't even see the corner apexes when I was approaching them because they were off the edge of the screen. As you can imagine, this didn't improve my laptimes any.... got any advice for that?

Yes, use about 65 to 90 degrees. All these videos about "correct" FOV are wrong. The smaller you make your FOV, the more you eliminate information used by your brain in perceiving what speed you are going. Because your monitor is a smaller window on reality than your eyes, which are around 160 degrees FOV, you need to make a compromise otherwise things may become too small to make out clearly.
@ZoltanF1LH
@ZoltanF1LH 3 жыл бұрын
@@jasonking1284 it depends very much on how your brain works, these FOV tutorials are NOT WRONG and they work for most people especially if you drive a car in the real world. If you only have a tiny monitor then yes setting the correct FOV will be too restricting so you have to go wider but 27" or larger screens the correct FOV will feel more natural.
@jasonking1284
@jasonking1284 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZoltanF1LH Nope. Accepting these ridiculous FOV theories just means you are gullible. You believe anything as long as it comes from an official looking source. Common sense will tell you that if you want to visually perceive what a person was experiencing whilst driving in reality on a monitor then the ENTIRETY of that vision must be brought to a monitor. If its a giant 80inch monitor, everything can be actual size as in real life, but if you make the monitor smaller, you need to SCALE everything down to fit into the monitor's screen size NOT cut things out of the screen edges. Imagine trying to play on a mobile phone screen size. According to these FOV calculations, you would continually be looking at a patch on the car windscreen. So all you would see on your mobile screen would be a blue screen for a sunny day and a grey screen for an overcast day. Then you would have to imagine what the road looks like and how fast and where you are going just using your ears.

Great video , I was looking for these calculations but i am to thick to work it out for my self. Once again Thanks. Unfortunately I think that the only way forward now is a VR headset , Monitors assume that you do not have any neck muscles, so it can be restrictive. Is there a cheaper alternative to VR? can you do a video on any possible options ? regards

This is absolutely correct, however, if you are using say a 22inch monitor (I still do) and sitting 27 inches away, you need a field of view in Assetto Corsa of around 20. This is technically right but the experience in terms of a feeling of speed and and immersion is none existent, yes you might be faster after time but that's simply practice and placebo effect. I have tried it, I spent 50 laps at Imola with a 20 field of view in cockpit camera and yes I got faster, but that was due to learning the track and car limits over time. You can do that in any view, it's just different. I proved after another 50 laps around Imola with a 45 field of view that I could beat my times set in the 'techinally correct' field of view. It's just a case of learning a different view and staying with it. Same as buying a new car, everything is different, obviously the bigger the screen the better for immersion. I would suggest a view in Assetto Corsa of around 45 is about right regardless of screen size. If at that field of view, you feel it is too small then increase your monitor / TV size keeping the view at 45 until you are happy with the balance between visibility and emersion. The way I came to this view as being correct in 2 dimensions is by looking at what you can see in VR and trying to match it in 2D, then increase monitor / TV to suite your seating position, in reality (a technically correct perspective), you would need a 52 - 55 inch screen sitting 27 inches away, you would need at least 4K for that and a the top graphics card available today. So whilst I agree that your theory is technically correct, it is not doing the sim justice sitting with your nose on the windscreen with barely any field of view (perspective wise). The placebo effect is very strong, if you buy a new wheel or pedals, you will most likely go faster because your brain is telling you that you are better now because you have better stuff so you must go faster and you most likely will. The best solution i can recommend both cost and practical wise would be a 1080P projector at 70 inches sitting around 40 inches away. :-)

I just set my FOV as your table suggested. I have 25 inch 21:9 screen and closest I can sit is 27 inches. I tried out Spa with Ferrari 2004 and improved my best by 1 second, now it's 1:52.something. But there is one problem with this approach with single monitor - I can't see corners. Like first right hairpin in Spa - when I start turning I barely see the edge of the apex. So FOV needs to be a bit wider, at least 1 degree, and seat position needs to be moved back to even see front of the wheels. I think some people would get motion sickness in Monaco, didn't try it out yet.

Specific/odd question: I race on my 65" home theater TV, with my cockpit sitting as close as possible to the screen (pedal board is up against the entertainment setup). When I calculate the 'real' FOV, it's insanely distorted and loses all depth perception. I think I calculate ~37 degrees FOV. Is this because I'm sitting so far away from the screen? Is a home theater just not optimal for racing?

@bekimprzalba8523
@bekimprzalba8523 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, maybe too late, but here my response: I think the only thing you have to be careful of are the different ways of measurement of FOVs (i.e. vFOV, hFOV etc., many different ways for different games; AC uses vFOV as mentioned) and the units (cm or inch). Sometimes the calculators round a little bit up or down, so there are different results. But they are like only 1 degree or something so you really shouldn't care that much. Actually, you can calculate the FOV yourself with the following formula: FOV = 2 * ARCTAN (0.5 * H / D) (took it from Hollow's excellent guide on FOV in the AC hub on Steam, I think he got some mathematical things wrong but it could be just me. With the trigonometrical functions you can really easily proof it yourself, Hollow also does a great job of explaining the proof in the guide) H: height of monitor D: distance to screen

Mythbuster3808 I didn't think you could adjust FOV on the rift. I thought that once you're Game recognized the VR device it sets you FOV to reality. If you do need to adjust it, I believe the rift and the vive have an FOV of 120degrees.

The "optimal" fov makes the game virtually unplayable instead of improving your laptimes, unless you have a very large screen.

You should be using a value somewhere around 34 degrees, so about half the wheel showing (depending on the car) sounds right

Totally not working for me. This might do for single seaters but in the Abarth 500 racecar you won't be able to see anything of the right side of the windscreen, as it even won't cover the mirror that sits in the middle, you are not even seeing all of the left side. For hitting left curbs it's cool...other not so much. So after fiddling with the settings I basically landed where I was before.
@samurai1993

Using a single monitor, not seeing the mirrors sounds to be correct if you use a realistic FOV. Just sit in a car and compare your irl FOV to the size of your monitor, and you should notice how small computer screens are. I concur that sometimes the calculated FOV just doesn't feels right, and that's when hands-on tuning works best. My case: - Default FOV: 45º - Calculated FOV: 19º - After manual tuning: 25º I have to use helicorsa and the virtual mirror, because mirrors just don't fit with a single monitor.
@Missinglink3003
@Missinglink3003 7 жыл бұрын
samurai1993 I totally understand the reasoning behind. Thing is in a car, as well as VR or tripple screens, you have peripheral view and you can move your head. With a single monitor that has a fixed view I really need to see the whole "car" otherwise I'd crash into everyone who is on the right side as I can't see them. Helicorsa helps a lot, but still. In a single seater it works great, but not in GT cars, where you are not sitting in the middle.

at least i`m not the only one. FOV that worked for me was 54, so i can see mirrors. otherwise i was crashing other cars. and even couldn`t see right corner of car. I believe these settings work only using 3 monitors.

Having the right FOV will help with immersion and will help you judge distances more naturally from the very beginning but if your already used to your FOV and can judge distances fine then there are no advantages. In shooter games to gain an edge you would want to increase your FOV to its max. It might not be as immersive but it will give you better situational awareness. To help with this drawback he suggests the app that allows you to see other cars around from a top down perspective which would help with situational awareness in traffic when it's most important. Odds are a corner won't sneak up on you so having a low FOV won't be to much of a hindrance in a racing sim.

FOV is flawed as long as it affects the focal length as well as the "window size" itself : your eyes do not have such adjustable setting! FOV should crop the image depnding on the screen size while maintaining a human vision focal length, not by crushing the perspective in front og you and making everything look near ...

Only helpful for people with really large screens and minimal viewing distance. I have a 65‘‘ TV and a distance of about 30 inches and I still have a very limited view if I set the FOV accordingly. So I rather set it a bit higher in order to have a better speed sensation and more visible area when cornering. Imagine you would drive your real car and there is just a small rectangle carved out in front of you where you acutally can see on the street -> that is the situation most of you have with smaller monitors and larger viewing distance. Btw: I do online racing regularly, have quite a few top times and guess what -> it does not slow you down.Reality is you have to set a compromise: not too far from reality, still giving you plenty of view angle and still having some sensation of speed.

For me, an FOV that is a bit too large does slow me down. Maybe not in a short race (under 30 minutes), but in a properly medium/long-duration race, it adds up.

Marcel B. 30 inches away from a 65 inch screen? You know the viewing distance for that size is like 9 feet minimum. You would be better moving farther back. My 55 inch is at 6 feet still feels too close.

I have a 64" screen and sit about 7.5ft from it. On PCARS I have the fov around 42-43 which feels about right to me, everything looks and feels the right scale (in the cockpit or drivers helmet view I play) and is very immersive for me.
